The resolution includes corrective measures for violations. Governor Gavin\u2064 Newsom signed a similar\u2064 law \u200bin 2022 designating California a transgender &#8220;sanctuary state.&#8221; The move also aims to ensure access\u2063 to transgender-related medical services for out-of-state residents.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>The Sacramento, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/california\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>California<\/a>, City Council voted unanimously this week to become a \u201csanctuary city\u201d for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/transgender\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>transgender<\/a> people, protecting so-called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/healthcare\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>transition tourism<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Sacramento\u2019s resolution would block all city resources from being used to help enforce laws from other states that restrict medical gender transitions for children and adults. The <a href=\"https:\/\/htv-prod-media.s3.amazonaws.com\/files\/item-07-2024-00772-resolution-declaring-the-city-of-sacramento-a-sanctuary-city-for-transgender-people-66025b56a648c.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>measure<\/a> would impose \u201ccorrective action\u201d on city officials found in violation, but it does not detail what those actions could be.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe see this as a strengthening measure,\u201d said Councilwoman Katie Valenzuela, sponsor of the resolution, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/california\/story\/2024-03-27\/sacramento-to-become-a-sanctuary-city-for-transgender-people\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>according<\/a> to the <em>Los Angeles Times<\/em>. \u201cThis is more than just protecting the people who live here. This is also about protecting people who come here from other communities to ensure that we\u2019re not aiding law enforcement activities in their home jurisdiction who may seek to criminalize their quest for healthcare.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) signed a law in 2022 designating California a transgender \u201csanctuary state,\u201d blocking California from helping other states penalize families seeking to transition their children. Sacramento\u2019s measure, which it advanced on Tuesday, appears aimed at solidifying access to transgender-related medical services for out-of-state residents as well.<\/p>\n<p>The Democratic Socialists of America had a hand in drafting the resolution. DSA organizer Emily Smet said she anticipates \u201claws criminalizing out-of-state healthcare in the very near future\u201d and explained that Sacramento\u2019s measure is modeled after sanctuary city laws that block local law enforcement from working with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/soros-backed-philadelphia-da-considered-helping-non-citizens-accused-of-rape-murder-avoid-deportation-records-show\/\" title=\"Soros-Backed Philadelphia DA Considered Helping Non-Citizens Accused Of Rape, Murder Avoid Deportation, Records Show\">federal immigration authorities<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCalifornia has been a leader in protecting the rights of transgender individuals to access care, but many states across the nation are moving in the opposite direction,\u201d the resolution said. \u201cIn preparation of future legislation that may criminalize those providing or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/biden-doj-warns-red-states-not-to-restrict-gender-affirming-care-for-trans-kids\/\" title=\"Biden DOJ Warns Red States Not To Restrict \u2018Gender-Affirming Care\u2019 for Trans Kids\">seeking gender-affirming care<\/a> and given the Council\u2019s stated values of equity and inclusion, it is important for the City of Sacramento to be proactive in reiterating our commitment to transgender rights and equal protections for transgender people by declaring ourselves a sanctuary city and a place of safety for transgender people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Prior to the vote, Sacramento Mayor Darrell Steinberg said the resolution is a \u201ccivil rights\u201d issue, adding, \u201cWhen it comes to talking about the human rights of people, our city is consistent, and we\u2019re strong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, the move has received some criticism from the Left. University of California, Berkeley, gender and women\u2019s studies professor Eric Stanley said measures of this nature could be misleading out-of-state transition-seekers into thinking their medical interventions will get covered by insurance, the <em>Los Angeles Times<\/em> reported.
