Instead of celebrating another trip around the sun for Wise, his extended family will gather without him to honor his 10 short years on Earth.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wish he was here. I really do wish I had him here. But unfortunately, his life was taken way too early by someone who wasn\u2019t even supposed to be in the country,\u201d Sykia Benson, Wise\u2019s mom, told The Federalist.  <\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2-long d-flex justify-content-center\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center; \" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-1960389007\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1379703300879-0\" class=\"mb-30\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-2d5c113da7c593dd47d4220e077181c0 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-2d5c113da7c593dd47d4220e077181c0\"><\/div>\n<p>Wise became <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/02\/15\/president-joe-bidens-border-invasion-victimizes-young-and-old-americans-everywhere\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">one of the many victims<\/a> of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/matt-vespa-help-us-save-america\/\" title=\"Matt Vespa: Help Us Save America\">ongoing border invasion<\/a> in February, shortly after he was struck and killed by an illegal border crosser as he headed home from school. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/the-irreversible-consequences-of-school-closures\/\" title=\"The Irreversible Consequences of School Closures\">elementary school student<\/a> used to ride the bus, but after his family moved apartments, he was asked to walk. <\/p>\n<p>Thursday, February 8 was Wise\u2019s first and last day to walk his new after-school route. Before the 10-year-old could even make it to the stop sign where someone was waiting to meet him, Wise was hit by a truck driven by an illegal border crosser. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverybody else let [Wise] cross the street but this car was so impatient that it went around. And he was almost on the grass, like a step away from being on the grass when he got hit,\u201d Benson said.<\/p>\n<p>Rogelio Ortiz Olivas, a 50-year-old Mexico native who re-crossed President Joe Biden\u2019s open border after facing deportation at least five times previously, was registered as <a href=\"https:\/\/www2.co.midland.tx.us\/apps\/inmates\/list\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">intoxicated at the time of the crash.<\/a> He fled the scene but was later arrested after an officer at a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/son-of-israeli-diplomat-wont-receive-immunity-in-motorcycle-crash\/\" title=\"Israeli diplomat's son denied immunity in motorcycle crash\">traffic stop noticed<\/a> his damaged car hood bearing an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.yourbasin.com\/news\/city-lack-of-crosswalk-signal-not-a-contributing-factor-in-misd-students-death\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cimpression of a skull.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-031ea9289010451d42344ec26bbfd718 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-6\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-031ea9289010451d42344ec26bbfd718\"><\/div>\n<p>Ortiz Olivas faces a third-degree felony of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.midlandtexas.gov\/CivicAlerts.aspx?aid=1371\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201chit and run, accident causing death\u201d<\/a>\u00a0charge for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.yourbasin.com\/news\/city-lack-of-crosswalk-signal-not-a-contributing-factor-in-misd-students-death\/\">\u201cdriver negligence\u201d<\/a> and failing to stop and render aid. Local\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www2.co.midland.tx.us\/apps\/inmates\/search\/\">arrest<\/a>\u00a0records confirm that, to this day, the Midland County Sheriff\u2019s Office is holding Ortiz for \u201ccollision involving serious bodily injury,\u201d \u201cdriving while intoxicated,\u201d and an immigration detainer. <\/p>\n<p>Benson says police told her Ortiz Olivas had a New Mexico driver\u2019s license and the car was in his name. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cSomebody helped him get identification,\u201d Benson said. \u201cSomebody helped him in New Mexico get an ID.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Midland Police Department did not immediately respond to The Federalist\u2019s questions about this alleged driver\u2019s license and whether it was still valid at the time of the incident. It wouldn\u2019t be impossible, however, for an illegal border crosser like Ortiz Olivas to have obtained a standard license at some point under <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nolo.com\/legal-encyclopedia\/can-an-undocumented-person-in-new-mexico-get-a-driver-s-license.html#:~:text=Undocumented%20persons%20in%20New%20Mexico,what's%20called%20a%20Standard%20License.&#038;text=In%20a%20small%20number%20of,nevertheless%20obtain%20a%20driver's%20license.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">New Mexico\u2019s lax ID laws. <\/a><\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-16ad54a69da0eca90234e747a858b326 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-10\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-16ad54a69da0eca90234e747a858b326\"><\/div>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u2018The Sweetest Kid\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>Benson received the devastating call that her son was injured and would be life-flighted to the nearby city of Lubbock for medical care as she was picking up her father from the local airport. By the next day, Benson\u2019s \u201csweet,\u201d \u201chelpful,\u201d and \u201cfriendly\u201d boy was gone. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was a kid. He got into things,\u201d Benson recalled. \u201cBut he was still just a sweet, sweet person.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Wise wasn\u2019t just sweet, he was also smart, making mostly A\u2019s and B\u2019s in school. When he wasn\u2019t learning math, his favorite subject, Wise was playing sports with friends<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe loved football, basketball, soccer. He loved it all. He was about to start playing football. He already played basketball and soccer,\u201d Benson said.<\/p>\n<p>Wise also loved playing with his one-year-old sister. Benson said her daughter doesn\u2019t quite understand Wise\u2019s absence but she recognizes it. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t think she knows too much now but you can definitely see a void where she\u2019s used to running to him, running in his room,\u201d Benson said. <\/p>\n<p>As for Benson, she\u2019s taking things \u201cday by day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI feel like I\u2019m at a standstill because it\u2019s surreal that he\u2019s gone,\u201d Benson said through tears.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Preventable Death<\/h2>\n<p>Since Wise\u2019s passing, Benson and her family have received an outpouring of support from their church, friends, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newswest9.com\/article\/entertainment\/events\/special-memorial-for-10-year-old-alex-wise-jr-who-died-on-friday-after-hit-and-run-accident\/513-8eb348dc-7883-4c41-9cb1-05969fec884b\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Wise\u2019s school<\/a>, which promised to erect a park bench in her son\u2019s name. But not even the most heartfelt gestures can take away the pain she feels when she wakes up early to take her son to school only to remember he\u2019s not there.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s been hard. Trying to get used to him not being here, it\u2019s been really, really difficult,\u201d Benson said.<\/p>\n<p>One of the most unexpected parts of her grieving process, Benson said, is her concern that a tragedy like the one her son endured could happen again. She said her son\u2019s death could have been prevented if the United States had better deportation enforcement and border security. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere should be laws put in place where if you\u2019re deported one time and you get caught a second time, it should be mandatory automatic jail time. So you keep sending them back and they keep coming over and they\u2019re getting over some kind of way. It\u2019s no control over the border,\u201d Benson said. <\/p>\n<p>Currently, Benson does not know when legal justice against her son\u2019s alleged killer will be served. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI actually haven\u2019t heard anything from anyone,\u201d Benson. \u201cNobody\u2019s been informing me about anything.
