While Israel&#8217;s war on Hamas in Gaza has enabled most of the some 130,000 Israelis who were evacuated from the south to return to their homes, nearly all of the about 50,000 evacuees from the northern border area have remained displaced, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/biden-is-dealing-with-the-worst-border-crisis-ever-should-the-gop-help-him\/\" title=\"Is Biden facing the worst border crisis ever? Should the GOP assist him?\">government data obtained<\/a> by the <em>Washington Free Beacon<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The Biden administration has increasingly sought to <a href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/latest-news\/netanyahu-cancels-israeli-delegation-to-us-after-it-allows-un-ceasefire-resolution\/\">restrain<\/a> Israel&#8217;s military response to Oct. 7, which the president has characterized as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/middle-east\/biden-says-gaza-fighting-over-top-pushing-pause-2024-02-09\">&#8220;over the top&#8221;<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/biden-administration\/biden-slams-americas-conduct-during-wwii-in-attempt-to-criticize-israel\/\">driven<\/a> by rage. But among war-weary Israelis, the crisis in the north has made clear that their fight is much bigger than Gaza\u2014and will not in there.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We need to get used to the fact that we will have to wage war on several fronts simultaneously because this is the Iranian strategy,&#8221; Orna Mizrahi, the former deputy head of Israel&#8217;s National Security Council, told the <em>Free Beacon<\/em>. &#8220;The Americans don&#8217;t want a regional war. But for most of Israel&#8217;s political and military leadership, the question is not if but when we will need to wage a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/quincy-institute-fellow-worries-israeli-lobby-will-scuttle-new-iran-deal\/\" title=\"Quincy Institute Fellow Worries \u2018Israeli Lobby\u2019 Will Scuttle New Iran Deal\">full-scale war<\/a> in the north.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/middle-east\/hezbollah-chief-says-shelling-israel-will-stop-only-when-aggression-gaza-ends-2024-02-13\/\">vowed<\/a> there will be no quiet in the north until Israel stops fighting in Gaza. Hamas leaders have similarly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/liveblog_entry\/khaled-mashaal-says-hostages-will-not-be-released-before-end-of-war\/\">made<\/a> ending the war a condition for the release of the remaining Israeli hostages who were taken on Oct. 7. At the same time, <a href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/latest-news\/watch-hezbollahs-nasrallah-calls-for-ethnic-cleansing-of-jews-from-the-river-to-the-sea\/\">both<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/latest-news\/watch-hamas-official-says-terrorist-group-will-repeat-oct-7-attack-again-and-again\/\">groups<\/a>, along with their patron <a href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/national-security\/israel-will-be-gone-soon-iranian-official-says\/\">Iran<\/a>, have recommitted themselves to Israel&#8217;s destruction.<\/p>\n<p>Top Israeli brass have said the Israel Defense Forces will, if necessary, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/middle-east\/israels-netanyahu-says-he-told-blinken-we-will-go-into-rafah-alone-if-needed-2024-03-22\/\">finish<\/a> the Gaza war alone and forcefully <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/middle-east\/israeli-defence-minister-says-hezbollah-aggression-bringing-critical-point-2024-03-05\/\">remove<\/a> Hezbollah from the northern border.<\/p>\n<p>During a recent two-day trip across Israel&#8217;s Lebanon border, northerners appeared united in frustration with the status quo. Many felt that Hezbollah had exposed Israeli weakness.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1873311\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1873311\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1873311\">Soldiers patrol Israel&#8217;s Route 899 (Andrew Tobin)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&#8220;Why is there a tank in my neighbor&#8217;s yard?&#8221; asked Yoram Yitzhaki, a 58-year-old businessman, in an interview at his house in Hanita, an evacuated kibbutz on the western border of Lebanon. &#8220;Why is the army hiding behind our backs?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are not strong enough,&#8221; added Yitzhaki, who has refused to evacuate. &#8220;We like to say we are strong enough. But no, we are not strong enough.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Amit Alfer, 57, agreed. Tank treads have scarred northern roads and communities, he must pass through a checkpoint to visit his evacuated kibbutz, Rosh HaNikra, and the beach where he jogs and free-dives has been blocked by trenches and barbed wire.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;All of this should be up there,&#8221; Alfer, a shiatsu therapist and former IDF reconnaissance officer, told the <em>Free Beacon<\/em>, gesturing up the coast toward Lebanon. &#8220;Israel is showing that she cannot protect us. It&#8217;s horrible to say, but it&#8217;s a fact.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Alfer recalled that on the evening of Oct. 7, an old army buddy who has risen to the rank of brigadier general called and persuaded him to flee his home with his wife and children. The friend, whom Alfer asked not be identified, said Hezbollah was hours away from launching a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.haaretz.com\/israel-news\/2018-12-06\/ty-article\/.premium\/a-hezbollah-blitzkrieg-tunnels-on-israel-lebanon-border-reveal-attack-plan\/0000017f-f3ff-d223-a97f-ffff51be0000\">long-planned<\/a> Oct. 7-style attack of its own.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Promise me now, you will leave and not come back for a month,&#8221; the general said, according to Alfer.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1873308\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1873308\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1873308\">Amit Alfer (Andrew Tobin)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Ofer Moskovich, 58, a farmer from Misgav Am, said that in the days after Oct. 7 IDF officials informed his community that Hamas planned to target them first in an invasion of Israel.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Most of the people are afraid to go back now in this situation,&#8221; Moskovich told the <em>Free Beacon<\/em>. &#8220;We&#8217;re afraid of the tunnels.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Moskovich said he and his neighbors had in recent years heard drilling noises under their homes in the middle of the night. He said the IDF checked the kibbutz for underground tunnels from Lebanon\u2014which Hezbollah has planned to use to attack Israel, according to military intelligence\u2014but the residents never learned the results of the investigation.<\/p>\n<p>The IDF did not provide comment.<\/p>\n<p>Moskovich said he advised his three adult daughters not to come back to the north for at least a few years. He predicted that up to a quarter of northerners, particularly young families, would not immediately return.<\/p>\n<p>But Moskovich has traveled into the evacuation zone nearly every weekday for the past month to work his avocado farm, and he said he would move home as soon as the government gave the go-ahead, preferably following an internationally backed diplomatic agreement with Hezbollah.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We don&#8217;t need any more wars,&#8221; he said. &#8220;We don&#8217;t need any more dead soldiers.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Institute for National Security Studies, a think tank at Tel Aviv University earlier this month <a href=\"https:\/\/www.inss.org.il\/he\/publication\/swords-of-iron-14\/\">found<\/a> that 92 percent of Israeli Jews strongly support the war goal of toppling Hamas. But the public&#8217;s views of the conflict in the north are more complicated. Sixty-eight percent want a more aggressive military campaign against Hezbollah\u201442 percent &#8220;even at the cost of regional war.&#8221; Half would seek to limit the fight to Hezbollah.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There&#8217;s a desire to focus on the south and finish what we wanted to do with Hamas in Gaza,&#8221; said Mizrahi, a senior researcher at the INSS. &#8220;Then, we can look to the north, maybe not now, maybe in a few months, maybe in a few years. It all depends on what will be with the Iranians.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Yitzhaki just hoped his wife\u2014who relocated to a kibbutz near Haifa with his eldest daughter and visits him on the weekends\u2014would soon feel safe enough to move back to Hanita. In the meantime, he was holding on to a plot of land he bought for his eldest daughter in the kibbutz.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1873314\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1873314\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1873314\">Yoram Yitzhaki (Andrew Tobin)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s up to her, but of course I want her here,&#8221; he said.\t<\/p>\n<p>Alfer, on the other hand, said he could not keep his family in the north if Israel did not invade Lebanon to change the security situation. But he expressed confidence it would not come to that.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We made a paradise here\u2014a fragile paradise\u2014and it will be again,&#8221; he said. &#8220;But now is the time of the sword.
