The legal move coincides\u2062 with the Biden administration&#8217;s SAVE Day of Action, promoting its student loan plan. The\u200c SAVE Plan, not\u2062 approved by Congress, could \u2063have significant costs, \u2063raising concerns about its \u2064impact.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Kansas Attorney General Kris Kobach will sue the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/biden-administration\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Biden administration\">Biden administration<\/a> on Thursday over its plans to forgive and alter <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/student-loans\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"student loans\">student loans<\/a>, a spokeswoman for his office confirmed to the <em>Washington Examiner. <\/em><\/p>\n<p>Kobach <a href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/columns\/why-kansas-plans-to-sue-the-biden-administration-over-the-latest-student-loan-gambit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"announced\">announced<\/a> in February that he planned to file suit but did not provide an exact time frame for when that would happen. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cKansas will take the lead in suing the administration, and we intend to win again,\u201d Kobach wrote in the <em>Washington Free-Beacon <\/em>on Feb. 28<\/p>\n<p>It appears the lawsuit will materialize exactly one month later. <\/p>\n<p>The announcement comes on the same day as the Biden administration\u2019s \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/white-house\/2940739\/kamala-harris-launches-day-of-action-to-boost-student-loans-program\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"SAVE Day of Action\">SAVE Day of Action<\/a>,\u201d designed to promote the Saving on a Valuable Education,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/2452005\/biden-launches-student-loan-website-for-save-debt-relief-plan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">or SAVE, Plan<\/a>\u00a0under which monthly student loan payments are as low as $0 for lower-income borrowers and loans can be written off completely after as little as 10 years.<\/p>\n<p>The SAVE Plan was not approved by Congress, however, and has also generated controversy because any unpaid debts fall on taxpayers. The Penn-Wharton Budget Model <a href=\"https:\/\/budgetmodel.wharton.upenn.edu\/issues\/2023\/7\/17\/biden-income-driven-repayment-budget-update\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"estimates\">estimates<\/a> that SAVE could cost $475 billion over 10 years. <\/p>\n<p>Biden\u2019s original student loan forgiveness program would have cost at least $400 billion but was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/1533584\/supreme-court-strikes-down-bidens-costly-student-loan-relief-plan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"struck down\">struck down<\/a> by a 6-3 Supreme Court decision last June. He has since forgiven roughly $144 billion using a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/white-house\/2932356\/how-biden-defied-supreme-court-to-cancel-144-billion-in-student-loans\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"different legal justification\">different legal justification<\/a> and announced the SAVE Plan, which will lower the amounts that are repaid in the future.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Supreme Court blocked it. They blocked it,\u201d Biden said on Feb. 21 in a speech about SAVE. \u201cBut that didn\u2019t stop me. I announced we were going to pursue alternative paths for student debt relief for as many borrowers as possible. And that\u2019s the effort that\u2019s been underway the last two years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The White House hosted an event Wednesday morning to promote the SAVE Plan featuring speakers from a range of groups including several labor unions and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. <\/p>\n<p>Education Secretary Miguel Cardona said the program will provide struggling borrowers with \u201ca little bit of breathing room\u201d but acknowledged that it has its detractors. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are people that are flat out trying to stop what we\u2019re doing,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd that tells me that we\u2019re doing the right things because we\u2019re helping those who often don\u2019t have a voice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The <em>Washington Examiner <\/em>has contacted the White House and the Department of Education seeking comment. <\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Biden\u2019s original student loan forgiveness plan was announced in the weeks leading up to the 2022 midterm elections and drew at least seven lawsuits arguing that the move was illegal.
