Democratic lawmakers have advocated \u200bfor broadening this\u200c process to provide more opportunities for eligible individuals.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Biden administration is reportedly considering expanding noncitizens\u2019 access to green cards, which confer legal permanent residence in the U.S.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">White House and Department of Homeland Security (DHS) officials are looking into expanding the \u201ccancellation of removal\u201d program. Officials are working on actions the president could take, possibly this summer, to blunt criticism of President Joe Biden\u2019s immigration policies, according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2024\/03\/25\/what-happened-to-bidens-executive-actions-on-the-border-00148717\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">POLITICO<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Immigrants undergoing deportation proceedings in immigration court can <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.law.cornell.edu\/wex\/cancellation_of_removal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">apply<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> for \u201ccancellation of removal.\u201d If eligible, applicants may be given a green card and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/fact-check-image-claims-white-house-cdc-fda-congressional-pfizer-and-moderna-employees-as-well-as-illegal-immigrants-are-exempt-from-bidens-vaccine-mandate\/\" title=\"FACT CHECK: Image Claims White House, CDC, FDA, Congressional, Pfizer And Moderna Employees As Well As Illegal Immigrants Are Exempt From Biden\u2019s Vaccine Mandate\">lawful permanent residence<\/a> in the U.S.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The cancellation process is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/eoir\/page\/file\/1596141\/dl?inline\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">limited<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> to 4,000 people each year, and the applicant must be undergoing deportation proceedings to apply. To qualify, the applicant must have lived in the U.S. for at least 10 years, be of \u201cgood moral character,\u201d not have been convicted of disqualifying crimes, and have a family member who is a U.S. citizen or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/doj-investigating-spacexs-hiring-practices-after-non-u-s-citizen-alleges-discrimination\/\" title=\"DOJ Investigating SpaceX\u2019s Hiring Practices After Non-U.S. Citizen Alleges Discrimination\">lawful permanent resident<\/a> who would \u201csuffer exceptional and extremely unusual hardship\u201d if the applicant is deported.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The program is only defensive, meaning that immigrants cannot apply until they officially enter into deportation proceedings in an immigration court. It\u2019s unclear how the Biden administration may intend to broaden out the process.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A group of Democratic lawmakers last year pressed the Biden administration to consider expanding the cancellation of removal process. Sens. Catherine Cortez Masto of Nevada, Dick Durbin of Illinois, Ben Ray Lujan of New Mexico, Bob Menendez of New Jersey, and Alex Padilla of California <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uscis.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/document\/foia\/CancellationofRemoval-SenatorCortezMasto.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">wrote<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> to officials at DHS and the Department of Justice in May 2023, pushing them to make cancellation of removal proceedings \u201cmore accessible.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The letter urges a reform of the program that would allow immigrants to apply for a review of their case outside of deportation proceedings.
