Calhoun\u2019s departure comes as Boeing is under scrutiny over recent airline accidents, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/crime\/2935242\/alaskan-airlines-passengers-crime-victims-boeing-door-incident-fbi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>the blowout of a door plug on an Alaska Airlines jet<\/a> in January.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe FAA administrator talked about concerns that arose when he visited their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/biden-justice-department-nominee-faces-ethics-minefield-from-fathers-corporate-interests\/\" title=\"Biden Justice Department Nominee Faces Ethics Minefield From Father\u2019s Corporate Interests\">manufacturing facility<\/a>,\u201d Buttigieg said on Fox News\u2019s <em>America\u2019s Newsroom<\/em>. \u201cNot just day-to-day operations, but really a question about culture: Are they prioritizing safety? And what we saw was a lot of focus on production. Of course, production is important, but the most important thing is safety.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The secretary was pressed on whether he viewed Calhoun\u2019s resignation as good news. Buttigieg stressed that he would not take a side on Boeing\u2019s leadership, only saying that the next leader should lead the company \u201cin a direction towards safety.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo what I\u2019ll say is that whoever is going to lead Boeing going forward needs to lead Boeing in a direction where culturally and operationally, they are 1,000% on top of all quality and safety issues,\u201d he added. \u201cAnd FAA\u2019s taken an extraordinary step of restricting how many aircraft they can produce isn\u2019t going to allow them to produce any higher numbers of aircraft until and unless they can demonstrate that they can do it safely.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Buttigieg also stressed that flying is still the \u201csafest mode of travel in the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Earlier this month, Boeing chief financial officer Brian West <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/policy\/finance\/2930986\/boeing-cfo-company-spend-more-expected-security-fixes-following-quality-concerns\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>warned <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/hunter-biden-defector-emails-pipeline-to-obama-admin-seen-as-currency\/\" title=\"Hunter Biden Defector Emails: 'Pipeline' to Obama Admin Seen as 'Currency'\">investors<\/a><\/a> that the company will expend more cash than expected in the first quarter, with spending expected to be between $4 billion and $4.5 billion.
