Biden\u2019s 2025 budget proposal shows what he values: too much spending and spending on the wrong priorities.<\/p>\n<p>Rather than trimming the federal government\u2019s sails after the <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/09\/21\/budget-analysts-conclude-biden-policies-will-add-4-8-trillion-to-national-debt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Covid spending binge<\/a> led to a prolonged bout of \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2023\/09\/19\/falling-household-income-numbers-show-how-bidenflation-has-hit-americans-wallets\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Bidenflation<\/a>,\u201d the administration\u2019s budget would accelerate the growth in spending that has seen federal debt balloon. And it would do so while not spending enough to secure our nation, and its border, from growing threats overseas.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2-long d-flex justify-content-center\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center; \" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-1369241023\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1379703300879-0\" class=\"mb-30\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-7472d1e61bd688abbfe8d55ba4af4d05 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-7472d1e61bd688abbfe8d55ba4af4d05\"><\/div>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Spending on Steroids<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Other sources have spent the two weeks since the budget\u2019s formal <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Politics\/biden-unveils-2025-budget-proposal-highlighting-election-year\/story?id=108010977\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">release<\/a> dissecting specific provisions and proposals within it. But it\u2019s worth focusing on the macro-level issues.<\/p>\n<p>Start with the topline spending number for this year\u2019s budget, which covers the fiscal year beginning this Oct. 1 and going through Sept. 30, 2025. The estimate of spending under Biden\u2019s proposal? $7.3 trillion. Or, to be <a href=\"https:\/\/view.officeapps.live.com\/op\/view.aspx?src=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.whitehouse.gov%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2F2024%2F03%2Fhist01z1_fy2025.xlsx&#038;wdOrigin=BROWSELINK\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">precise<\/a>, $7,265,963,000,000.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s hard to imagine a number that big. But to break it down on a more granular level, the total comes to just under $20 billion in federal spending <em>per day<\/em>. At that rate, the federal government would spend down the net worth of people like Elon Musk or Jeff Bezos in just over a week. (So much for the idea that taxing \u201cmillionaires and billionaires\u201d can solve all our fiscal problems.)<\/p>\n<p>The number also looks immense by <a href=\"https:\/\/view.officeapps.live.com\/op\/view.aspx?src=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.whitehouse.gov%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2F2024%2F03%2Fhist01z1_fy2025.xlsx&#038;wdOrigin=BROWSELINK\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">historical comparisons<\/a>. In fiscal year 2017, which included Barack Obama\u2019s last few months in office, the federal government spent just a hair under $4 trillion. If Biden\u2019s estimate holds true, that means federal spending will have increased by about $3.3 trillion, or nearly 82.5 percent, over the past eight years.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-a2f15c6db67901e7b8e762b45a13a359 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-6\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-a2f15c6db67901e7b8e762b45a13a359\"><\/div>\n<p>How many Americans\u2019 incomes have gone up by 82.5 percent during that time? Mine sure hasn\u2019t. And <a href=\"https:\/\/view.officeapps.live.com\/op\/view.aspx?src=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.whitehouse.gov%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2F2024%2F03%2Fhist01z2_fy2025.xlsx&#038;wdOrigin=BROWSELINK\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">according to the budget<\/a>, the economy will grow by only 51.4 percent from 2017 through 2025, meaning government is growing faster than the economy and crowding out the private sector in the process.<\/p>\n<p>Even compared to the Covid spending binge of recent years, Biden\u2019s budget looks ridiculously large. In fiscal year 2023, the federal government <a href=\"https:\/\/view.officeapps.live.com\/op\/view.aspx?src=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.whitehouse.gov%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2F2024%2F03%2Fhist01z1_fy2025.xlsx&#038;wdOrigin=BROWSELINK\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">spent<\/a> \u201conly\u201d $6.1 trillion. The budget proposal would lead to spending growth of 18.4 percent between 2023 and 2025. That\u2019s growth coming <em>on top of<\/em> the Covid levels of spending.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Wrong Priorities<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Apart from the horrifying numbers inside it, the words in the budget document speak volumes themselves. The phenomenon of searchable PDFs allows readers to examine in detail the Biden administration\u2019s priorities, and unsurprisingly, they are grossly misaligned.<\/p>\n<p>Take two simple words: \u201cclimate\u201d and \u201cborder.\u201d In the 188-page main <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/budget_fy2025.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">budget document<\/a>, the word \u201cclimate\u201d appears 148 times \u2014 nearly once every page. That\u2019s consistent with an administration that seemingly insists on sending America back to the Stone Age, publishing a <em>de facto<\/em> ban on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/jules-this-is-brian-a-visit-to-new-york-citys-9-11-museum\/\" title=\"\u2018Jules, This is Brian\u2019: A Visit to New York City\u2019s 9\/11 Museum\">gasoline-powered cars<\/a>, and much else in the name of addressing the \u201cclimate crisis.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-dde2c2d311dedf647ec3c9b3722e63e2 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-10\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-dde2c2d311dedf647ec3c9b3722e63e2\"><\/div>\n<p>By comparison, the word \u201cborder\u201d appears only 65 times, or less than half as much. That\u2019s sadly consistent with an administration that will only <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2024\/03\/25\/what-happened-to-bidens-executive-actions-on-the-border-00148717\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">do something about the border<\/a>, not that its half-measures will work, when hordes of migrants are appearing on Americans\u2019 television screens every day. To put it more bluntly, this administration believes protecting Americans is a <em>political problem to be managed<\/em>, not a sacred obligation under our Constitution.<\/p>\n<p>Likewise for the administration\u2019s defense spending proposals, which will see defense spending remain nearly flat in 2025, amounting to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/biden-defense-budget-pentagon-u-s-military-china-russia-israel-ukraine-ba7fd46b\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">real-terms reduction<\/a> after taking inflation into account. Over the longer term, defense spending under the budget will <a href=\"https:\/\/view.officeapps.live.com\/op\/view.aspx?src=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.whitehouse.gov%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2F2024%2F03%2Fhist06z1_fy2025.xlsx&#038;wdOrigin=BROWSELINK\">decline<\/a> to 2.4 percent of GDP in the coming decade. That\u2019s down from about 3 percent of GDP now, and amounts to cutting defense spending nearly in half as a share of the economy from fiscal year 2010, Barack Obama\u2019s first full year in office, when defense spending totaled 4.7 percent of the economy.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Wrong Budget for America<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>On every single level, Biden\u2019s budget demonstrates the wrong priorities. Too much spending on a woke and weaponized bureaucracy, more proposed expansions of the welfare state, and not enough spending on securing our border and keeping our country strong from foreign threats. Thankfully, the slender Republican majorities in Congress should at a minimum get to sand the roughest edges off of these wrong priorities when considering next year\u2019s spending measures.<\/p>\n<p>But it will take a larger change of course to start turning the course back in the right direction, and the political will to apply meaningful constraints to federal spending for the first time in a long time. The latest fiasco of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2024\/03\/22\/senate-tees-up-final-passage-vote-for-1-2t-funding-package-00148695\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">bill that passed Congress<\/a> does not engender much hope for actual fiscal discipline \u2014 but the American people desperately need some, and fast.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-49a81b4fb2569705c6a178e0694a68a8 fdrlst__b89e9-after-post-content\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-49a81b4fb2569705c6a178e0694a68a8\"><\/div>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\">    \t\t\t\t\t   \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Joe Biden often asserts, &#8220;Don&#8217;t tell me your values.
