Despite\u200d living far from the area he aims\u200c to represent, \u2064Daniels emphasizes \u2063his statewide leadership\u200b role. The district&#8217;s redesign aims to enhance black voter representation and Democratic prospects.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>With <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/2905090\/democrats-alabama-2nd-congressional-district-race-runoff\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"a runoff election\">a runoff election<\/a> in just under a month for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/democrats\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"a runoff election\">Alabama<\/a>\u2019s newly drawn 2nd Congressional District, one of the candidates competing for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/democrats\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Democratic\">Democratic<\/a> nomination lives more than a five-hour drive away from the region he\u2019s working to represent.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>State Rep. Anthony Daniels is running against former Justice Department official Shomari Figures in the April 16 runoff after the district was reshaped to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/florida-redistricting-map-shows-stephanie-murphy-seat-deleted-republicans-gain\/\" title=\"Florida Redistricting Map Shows Stephanie Murphy Seat Deleted, Republicans Gain\u00a0\">give black voters<\/a> more representation following a legal battle that reached the Supreme Court.<\/p>\n<p>Daniels, who serves as the Alabama House <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/schiff-nadler-call-flynn-pardon-abuse-of-power\/\" title=\"Schiff, Nadler Call Flynn Pardon 'Abuse of Power'\">minority leader<\/a>, lives nowhere near the newly drawn 2nd District, which stretches from urban areas in Montgomery and Mobile. The state representative\u2019s<a href=\"https:\/\/services.statescape.com\/LegislatorInfo\/Legislator.aspx?id=12778\"> office<\/a> is in Huntsville in the northern part of the state. His <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/anthonyldaniels\/\">LinkedIn<\/a> also lists his location as Huntsville, which is over 350 miles away and would be an over five-hour drive.<\/p>\n<p>An <a href=\"https:\/\/host2.adimpact.com\/admo\/viewer\/31fcccf7-7d48-456b-a806-b8dd9a2b6f64\">ad <\/a>the campaign is running claims Daniels, as Democratic leader in the Statehouse, helped \u201csteer millions of dollars\u201d into the district, calling him \u201cone of us for all of us.\u201d While Daniels didn\u2019t represent that specific district, he\u2019s alluding to his work in Democratic leadership.<\/p>\n<p>The residency issue is not a legal problem, as candidates do not have to live in the district to represent it. Daniels has previously addressed the fact that his residence is far from the district, as it has been a point of contention among his opponents.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI live in Huntsville, but I\u2019m the minority leader for the entire state of Alabama,\u201d Daniels said, according to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/03\/04\/us\/politics\/alabama-primary-second-congressional-district.html\">reporting<\/a> from the<em> New York Times. \u201c<\/em>So I\u2019m doing work for the entire state of Alabama.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Before he announced his run, he detailed being raised by his grandparents, who lived in the 2nd District, in an <a href=\"https:\/\/1819news.com\/news\/item\/house-minority-leader-anthony-daniels-strongly-considering-run-for-congress-in-2nd-congressional-district\">interview<\/a> with <em>1819 News.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt the end of the day, we have people that are currently in office that we don\u2019t know where they live. At the end of the day, if we limit representation based on lines and whether or not a person can actually do something to really have a positive impact on the entire district, that\u2019s my home,\u201d he said in the interview.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A federal court in 2022 struck down Alabama\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/pelosi-who-claims-to-oppose-gerrymandering-funnels-300000-to-democratic-gerrymandering-group\/\" title=\"Pelosi, Who Claims to Oppose Gerrymandering, Funnels 0,000 to Democratic Gerrymandering Group\">congressional map<\/a>, saying they unconstitutionally packed black voters into a single district and then the Supreme Court <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/2579953\/supreme-court-denies-request-by-alabama-to-use-new-congressional-maps\/\">rejected<\/a> Alabama\u2019s congressional map last year, which led to a new map approved last October. The 2nd District now has a black voting-age population of nearly 50% and gives Democrats a better chance of picking up another seat in Alabama.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not a great look to live so far away from the district you\u2019re seeking to represent,\u201d said a Democratic strategist speaking on the condition of anonymity to reflect on the situation. \u201cI wouldn\u2019t say it\u2019s a deal breaker since he knows the area well, but think about how often a member of Congress has to travel between the nation\u2019s capital and their district; that\u2019s already a challenge.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniels isn\u2019t the only candidate this cycle to be competing to represent a district in which he doesn\u2019t reside. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/blake-masters\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Blake Masters<\/a>,\u00a0who\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/midterm-results-arizona-senate-masters-kelly\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">lost his Senate bid<\/a>\u00a0in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/arizona\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Arizona<\/a>\u00a0last cycle, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/2448287\/blake-masters-announces-hes-running-for-arizona-house-seat-instead-of-senate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"announced\">announced<\/a> he\u2019s running to represent the state\u2019s 8th District, which is in Phoenix, while he lives in Tucson. However, the distance between the two Arizona districts is about 110 miles away and less than a two-hour drive. <\/p>\n<p>Figures outperformed Daniels during the first round of the primary with a 21-point lead in early March.
