Despite being \u2064passed in 2021 and signed by Mayor Bill de\u200c Blasio,\u200d recent\u2063 rulings have declared the law unconstitutional, \u200bprompting ongoing legal disputes and an appeal to the \u200bstate&#8217;s highest court.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<p>The New York City Council is asking <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/topic\/new-york\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New York\u2019s<\/a> highest court to reverse a pair of rulings in a move that could ultimately allow non-citizens to vote in local elections.<\/p>\n<p>The controversial law would allow 800,000 non-citizens with green cards to vote.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday\u2019s filing to appeal the Second Department\u2019s recent decision seeks a determination from the state\u2019s highest court that the law is consistent with the State Constitution, Election Law, and the Municipal Home Rule Law,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/03\/25\/us-news\/city-council-asks-highest-court-to-allow-non-citizens-to-vote\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> City Council spokesperson Rendy Desamours.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEmpowering New Yorkers to participate in our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/nyc-council-makes-new-push-for-noncitizens-to-be-able-to-vote-with-appeal\/\" title=\"NYC Council advocates for voting rights for noncitizens in new initiative\">local democratic process<\/a> can only strengthen New York City by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/how-biden-is-trying-to-turn-election-offices-into-partisan-get-out-the-vote-operations\/\" title=\"How Biden Is Trying To Turn Election Offices Into Partisan Get Out The Vote Operations\">increasing civic engagement<\/a>,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The election law has been winding its way through the court system since it was passed by the City Council back in 2021 and signed into law by then-Mayor Bill de Blasio (D).<\/p>\n<p>Last month, the law was struck down as unconstitutional by an appeals court. The appeals court\u2019s decision <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/02\/21\/us-news\/nyc-non-citizen-voting-law-struck-down-as-unconstitutional\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">upheld<\/a> a lower court\u2019s ruling in 2022 that was appealed by Mayor Eric Adams and the City Council.<\/p>\n<p>Adams, a Democrat, said at the beginning of 2022 that he had initially had some concerns about the bill, but that he was reassured after speaking with colleagues.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI believe allowing the legislation to be enacted is by far the best choice, and look forward to bringing millions more into the democratic process,\u201d Adams <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nyc.gov\/office-of-the-mayor\/news\/021-22\/mayor-adams-on-our-city-our-vote-legislation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> at the time.<\/p>\n<p><b><a href=\"https:\/\/onelink.to\/dwapp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" aria-describedby=\"sk-tooltip-9096\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/onelink.to\/dwapp&#038;source=gmail&#038;ust=1700760801843000&#038;usg=AOvVaw2PQrVSrJfhxNb4LcARqniG\">CLICK HERE TO GET THE DAILYWIRE+ APP<\/a><\/b><\/p>\n<p>The appeals court judge wrote in his ruling last month that if non-citizens could vote, they could also potentially run for mayor.<\/p>\n<p>Assemblyman Michael Tannousis, a Republican representing Staten Island, was one of the plaintiffs in that case.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDuring a time where nearly 200,000 migrants have flooded our city and streets, disrupting the public and attacking our police officers, my colleagues and I have worked tirelessly to protect our voting laws which were created for citizens of the United States,\u201d Tannousis said last month.<\/p>\n<p>Illegal migrants would not be able to vote under the bill, but they remain a major concern for the city. More than 183,000 migrants have shown up in New York City since the spring of 2022, straining the city\u2019s shelter space and causing budget cuts.<\/p>\n<p>The City Council argues, however, that non-citizens in the U.S. legally, such as those with green cards, should be allowed to vote since they pay taxes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn plain English, the New York state constitution says only citizens have a right to vote in these elections,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/03\/25\/us-news\/city-council-asks-highest-court-to-allow-non-citizens-to-vote\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> Staten Island President Vito Fossella, who filed the legal challenge to the law along with other lawmakers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/the-red-wave-of-conservative-women-elected-to-congress\/\" title=\"The Red Wave of Conservative Women Elected to Congress\">city council<\/a> has no authority to do what they did,\u201d Fossella said, adding that, \u201cWe are not surprised.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The NYC Council seeks to overturn rulings to enable non-citizens to vote in local elections.
