Kristi Noem as his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/kamala-harris-backed-bail-fund-freed-alleged-domestic-abuser-now-accused-of-murder\/\" title=\"Kamala Harris-Backed Bail Fund Freed Alleged Domestic Abuser Now Accused Of Murder\">vice presidential nominee<\/a> for 2024. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cKristi Noem has been incredible fighting for me,\u201d Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2024\/02\/04\/trump-vp-pick-tim-scott-kristi-noem\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said <\/a>on Fox News last month. \u201cShe said, \u2018I\u2019d never run against him because I can\u2019t beat him.\u2019 That was a very nice thing to say.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2-long d-flex justify-content-center\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center; \" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-1427718680\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1379703300879-0\" class=\"mb-30\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-1df59235d8c0ec66f65ae2e7b6b74360 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-1df59235d8c0ec66f65ae2e7b6b74360\"><\/div>\n<p>Noem\u2019s track record as governor, however, showcases a state executive more eager to capitulate to corporate constituents at the Chamber of Commerce and capitalize on the glamour of political stardom than governing on behalf of Republican voters. <\/p>\n<p>Three years ago, Noem <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2021\/03\/22\/bowing-to-corporate-demands-for-watered-down-bill-gov-kristi-noem-sells-out-womens-sports\/\">shot down<\/a> a transgender sports ban that would have barred males from competing in women\u2019s sports. She ultimately <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/transgender-athletes-female-sports-teams-south-dakota-kristi-noem\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">signed<\/a> a similar bill a year later as she faced re-election in the deep red state, after spending the 11 months prior aggressively sabotaging the effort to <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2021\/03\/24\/kristi-noems-advisors-include-corporate-interests-who-pushed-veto-on-transgender-sports-bill\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">please corporate interests<\/a>. That sabotage included funding primaries against members of her own party who acted on their knowledge that men and women are different.<\/p>\n<p>Noem initially rejected the legislation in response to a lobbying campaign from the South Dakota Chamber of Commerce. It formed a coalition to block the bill, alleging fear of reprisal from the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). Noem\u2019s chief of staff <a href=\"https:\/\/thefdrlst.wpengine.com\/2021\/03\/24\/kristi-noem-running-the-mike-pence-play-to-help-leftists-control-the-culture\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">at the time<\/a> of her 2021 veto was Tony Venhuizen, a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/siouxfallschamber.com\/about\/about-the-chamber\/board-of-directors\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">board<\/a>\u00a0member of the Sioux Falls Chamber of Commerce. The business group listed the ban on male athletes dominating female leagues\u00a0as a \u201ctier 1\u201d priority \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.siouxfallschamber.com\/bill-tracker.cfm\">of the highest importance<\/a>\u201d to oppose.<\/p>\n<p>Another top advisor to the South Dakota governor included Matt McCaulley, a lawyer and lobbyist\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MZHemingway\/status\/1374175074622836741\">whose<\/a>\u00a0clients The Federalist reported include Sanford Health. Sanford is a rural health conglomerate that owns Sanford Sports Complex in Sioux Falls, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sanfordsports.com\/locations\/sioux-falls\/sports-complex\/pentagon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">which hosts<\/a> major NCAA events.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-581d36d4e7f31551460838ee3c4d1e37 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-6\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-581d36d4e7f31551460838ee3c4d1e37\"><\/div>\n<p>Sanford Health has also committed transgender medical interventions on minors, according to 2020\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.argusleader.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2020\/01\/22\/south-dakota-legislature-transgender-treatment-bill-gets-first-committee-hearing\/4534125002\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">testimony<\/a>\u00a0before the South Dakota legislature. It used its substantial weight in the state to oppose the invasive procedures that the state legislature finally <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2023\/02\/14\/south-dakota-bans-child-sex-changes-kristi-noem-transgender\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">managed to ban<\/a> in 2023 after Noem received pressure from voters and conservative media.<\/p>\n<p>Noem\u2019s corporate-friendly governance extended to standing <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2023\/06\/22\/where-is-kristi-noem-as-her-corporate-sponsors-take-over-constituents-land\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">idly by<\/a> as South Dakota landowners face eminent domain lawsuits to seize their lands for a carbon capture pipeline. Corporate interests behind the project include Noem\u2019s son-in-law, who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/posts\/kyle-peters-360a6217a_southdakota-gevo-development-activity-7024721690400092160-OZKV\/?originalSubdomain=na\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">lobbied<\/a> lawmakers last year around the same time the legislature denied protections for residents opposed to the pipeline on their land. <\/p>\n<p>The two-term governor built a national reputation on resisting the coronavirus lockdowns. Noem was the only state executive who never ordered businesses to close, a fact that her team touted to Republican voters as she flirted with a presidential campaign in 2021. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor those of you who don\u2019t know, South Dakota is the only state in America that never ordered a single business or church to close,\u201d Noem <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c-span.org\/video\/?509082-4\/south-dakota-governor-kristi-noem-addresses-cpac&#038;event=509082&#038;playEvent\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said <\/a>that year at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC), one of the nation\u2019s largest annual gatherings of grassroots conservatives. \u201cWe never instituted a shelter-in-place order. We never mandated that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/this-data-for-masked-vs-unmasked-counties-would-be-on-every-front-page-if-it-showed-a-different-result\/\" title=\"This Data For Masked Vs Unmasked Counties Would Be On Every Front Page, If It Showed a Different Result\">people wear masks<\/a>. We never even defined what an essential business is because I don\u2019t believe governors have the authority to tell you your business isn\u2019t essential.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-7adf6ba503f9dcee284fe6adfc818ca3 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-10\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-7adf6ba503f9dcee284fe6adfc818ca3\"><\/div>\n<p>Except early in the coronavirus panic, Noem had asked the legislature for exactly the powers she claimed she had rejected: authority to determine which businesses are \u201cessential.\u201d Jon Schweppe, policy director for American Principles Project (APP), outlined in a <a href=\"https:\/\/jonschweppe.substack.com\/p\/actually-kristi-noem-supported-covid\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Substack post<\/a> how Noem\u2019s alleged refusal to shut down South Dakota was actually a decision the state legislature made for her. <\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>On March 30, 2020, at the request of Gov. Noem, South Dakota Rep. Lee Qualm introduced House Bill 1297, a bill that would declare a state of emergency in South Dakota and give the Secretary of Health unprecedented powers to impose mandates and lockdowns, allowing for the placement of \u2018reasonable restrictions\u2019 on any public or private location, including a \u2018business, park, school, or other location that promotes public gathering.\u2019<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cUnwilling to grant the executive branch that level of unchecked power,\u201d Schweppe added, \u201cthe South Dakota House of Representatives emphatically rejected Gov. Noem\u2019s bill.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Noem then harnessed the political capital of lockdown resistance the legislature had earned, through credibility with Republican voters leftist media gave her through their vicious attacks. Rolling Stone Magazine <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/politics\/politics-features\/south-dakota-kristi-noem-covid-1142068\/\">named<\/a> Noem the \u201cCOVID Queen of South Dakota.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Other <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2020\/05\/05\/media-attack-gov-kristi-noem-for-not-panicking-and-destroying-her-state\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">outlets<\/a> also pinned any rise in the state\u2019s coronavirus cases on the governor. \u201cSouth Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem says lockdowns are \u2018useless\u2019 as state\u2019s COVID-19 cases soar,\u201d ran a <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/US\/south-dakota-gov-kristi-noem-lockdowns-useless-states\/story?id=73451385\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">headline<\/a> from ABC. <\/p>\n<p>South Dakota ultimately did <a href=\"https:\/\/www.census.gov\/library\/stories\/2024\/03\/excess-mortality-during-covid-19.html#:~:text=The%20longest%20and%20most%20deadly,New%20Jersey%20and%20Washington%2C%20D.C.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">no worse<\/a> in terms of excess all-cause mortality than surrounding states in the first year of the pandemic. The Washington Post, however, made sure to give Noem the <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2020\/04\/15\/washington-post-tries-to-pin-coronavirus-spread-on-gov-crazy-eyes-kristi-noem\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cCrazy Eyes\u201d treatment<\/a>. The paper pinned the outbreak on the governor and featured the image below with the headline: \u201cSouth Dakota\u2019s governor resisted ordering people to stay home. Now it has one of the nation\u2019s largest coronavirus hot spots.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>This is how media treat every significant Republican woman. Noem\u2019s treatment recalls that of former Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann. See, for example, this Newsweek cover.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin received similar media treatment when she was tapped in 2008 to run for vice president. Noem can expect no less this fall if she gets the Trump pick. But hate from the media doesn\u2019t mean Noem is a great pick. <\/p>\n<p>Whether she ultimately runs for vice president or not, Noem has already skipped to cashing in on her minor celebrity status with influencer-style promotional videos.
