Governor \u2064Eric Holcomb signed \u200cHouse Bill 1084 into law to prevent financial\u2062 companies from rejecting transactions related to firearms. Sponsored by State Rep. Jake Teshka, the measure aims to regulate the tracking of firearms transactions \u2062by credit card companies.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>(The Center Square) \u2013 Indiana has joined a small group of states that have made it a crime for banks and credit card companies to track purchases of guns and ammunition through the use of a special code.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this month, Gov. Eric Holcomb signed House Bill 1084 into law. The legislation bars financial service companies from declining a transaction tied to a merchant category code designated for firearms products. Credit card companies use the codes to indicate the types of products and services being purchased by a cardholder.<\/p>\n<p>State Rep. Jake Teshka, R-North Liberty, sponsored the measure. It comes roughly 18 months after the International Organization for Standardization\u2019s Registration and Maintenance Management Group\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecentersquare.com\/new_york\/article_5e81114c-307b-11ed-9d5f-8bd1e30f121a.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>accepted a request<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0made by a New York-based bank. Attorneys general from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecentersquare.com\/new_york\/article_934ab4fc-2afc-11ed-a209-f36ef2be9871.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>New York and California<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0also supported the move, saying it would help track suspicious gun sales.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLawful Hoosier gun owners shouldn\u2019t have to worry about their firearm purchases being tracked and stored in a database somewhere,\u201d Teshka said last month after his bill passed the House. \u201cWithout the protections in this bill, these codes could allow gun-owning citizens\u2019 privacy to be violated simply for exercising a constitutional right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Companies found to violate the law would be subject to fines of up to $10,000. While HB1084 takes effect on July 1, provisions related to credit and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/stimulus-check-update-direct-payment-of-500-guaranteed-income-program-arriving-in-three-days\/\" title=\"Update: 0 stimulus check guaranteed income program to be received in three days.\">debit card payments<\/a> will take effect in October and are limited to only purchases made within the state.<\/p>\n<p>According to the National Shooting Sports Foundation, Indiana joins Florida, Idaho, Mississippi,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecentersquare.com\/montana\/article_6fb077c8-00a5-11ee-8f38-5bf0db083c59.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Montana<\/strong><\/a>, North Dakota, Texas, Utah and West Virginia in passing such laws to bar companies from blocking or tracking such transactions.<\/p>\n<p>Similar legislation has been discusssed in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecentersquare.com\/tennessee\/article_ed215850-e860-11ee-bbd9-3f162f904592.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Tennessee<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecentersquare.com\/ohio\/article_d60885bc-da46-11ee-bb3f-5f186a15a0cf.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Ohio<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0among other states.<\/p>\n<p>However, California lawmakers have passed a law requiring retailers to use the code to track purchases considered suspicious.<\/p>\n<p>The industry group supported the measure, saying it violates the U.S. Constitution.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCorporate banks and the federal government have already proven they will run roughshod over Second Amendment and privacy rights,\u201d said Lawrence G.
