Kennedy Jr.<\/a>\u00a0will announce his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/vice-president\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>vice presidential<\/a> pick Tuesday, likely giving a boost to his struggling independent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/section\/campaigns\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>campaign<\/a> in the coming days as his long-shot bid wrestles with meeting individual state ballot requirements.<\/p>\n<p>Kenndey\u2019s announcement is set to take place in Oakland, California, and will help Kennedy gain access to dozens more state ballots. He is expected to name Democratic donor and ex-wife of Google co-founder Sergey Brin, Nicole Shanahan, as his running mate Tuesday. He had also considered NFL star\u00a0Aaron Rodgers and former Democratic Hawaii Rep. Tulsi Gabbard.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/election-2024\/?utm_source=homepage&#038;utm_medium=banner&#038;utm_campaign=iowa_caucus&#038;utm_id=election2024\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ELECTION 2024: FOLLOW LATEST COVERAGE<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>However, Kennedy\u2019s campaign is also dealing with a crisis in Nevada, a critical battleground state that requires a running mate for a candidate to appear on the ballot. <\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Earlier this month, his campaign claimed it had more than 15,000 signatures in the Silver State needed to qualify for the ballot. Kennedy, however, filed the paperwork with only his name on the ticket, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/rfk-jr-ballot-signatures-nevada\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>CBS News<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>The <em>Washington Examiner<\/em> reached out to Nevada\u2019s secretary of state\u2019s office for comment but did not receive a response. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Without a vice presidential partner, those signatures could be void, and Kennedy could be forced to collect the 15,000 signatures all over again. Kennedy\u2019s campaign lambasted the requirement, calling the possibility that the campaign\u2019s signatures could be invalidated \u201cthe epitome of corruption.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter successfully collecting all of the signatures we need in Nevada, the DNC Goon Squad and their lackeys in the Nevada Secretary of State\u2019s office are outright inventing a new requirement for the petition with zero legal basis,\u201d said Kennedy campaign ballot access attorney Paul Rossi. \u201cThe Nevada statute does not require the VP on the petition. The petition does not even have a field for a VP on it. The state confirmed that the petition does not require a VP in writing on Nov. 14. The state approved our petition without a VP on it in writing on Jan. 9.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis assault on the democratic rights of millions of Americans in Nevada, and their freedom to vote for an independent candidate, embodies the corruption and depravity that has come to characterize the Democratic Party,\u201d Rossi said.<\/p>\n<figure><\/figure>\n<p>Kennedy first qualified for a state ballot in Utah in early January, which the campaign told the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em> was for strategic reasons. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cRunning an independent campaign comes with the difficult task of getting on each state\u2019s ballot. We broke down our states into four different tiers,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/2711338\/rfk-jr-s-2024-strategy-hearkens-back-to-independent-ross-perots-historic-1992-bid\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>said Kennedy spokeswoman<\/a> Stefanie Spear at the time. The first tier, which Utah is in, allows for the earliest petitioning, and \u201cyou didn\u2019t need any electors and didn\u2019t need to have your [vice president].\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.realclearpolling.com\/polls\/president\/general\/2024\/trump-vs-biden-vs-kennedy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title><em>RealClearPolitics<\/em><\/a> poll average, Kennedy garners 12.3% in a three-way matchup with President Joe Biden, at 35.3%, and former President Donald Trump, at 40.7%. <\/p>\n<p>Biden\u2019s reelection campaign supporters and the Democratic National Committee have gone on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/2024-election\/dnc-war-third-party-candidates-rcna143290\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>offense<\/a> against Kennedy and other independent or third-party candidate spoilers by creating the Clear Choice super PAC and a DNC team dedicated to handling this problem with staff such as Pete Buttigieg alumna and strategist Lis Smith. <\/p>\n<p>The DNC filed an <a href=\"https:\/\/democrats.org\/news\/dnc-files-fec-complaint-against-super-pac-american-values-2024-and-robert-f-kennedy-jr-s-campaign-for-illegal-ballot-access-scheme\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>FEC complaint<\/a> last month against American Values 2024, a super PAC backing Kennedy\u2019s campaign, for accepting $15 million in \u201cunlawful, in-kind\u201d contributions to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/why-no-labels-may-have-no-cash-and-no-plan\/\" title=\"No Labels: No Money, No Strategy\">gain ballot access<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cRobert F. Kennedy Jr.\u2019s campaign is flouting campaign finance law by outsourcing a critical campaign function \u2013 the collection of signatures required to appear on the ballot \u2013 to an outside Super PAC that is funded by Donald Trump\u2019s top\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/us\/rfk-jrs-bid-independent-presidential-run-garners-mega-trump-donor-support-2024-02-01\/\">donor<\/a>\u00a0this cycle,\u201d said DNC senior adviser Mary Beth Cahill. \u201cThis scheme between American Values 2024 and Robert F. Kennedy Jr.\u2019s campaign requires significant \u2013 and plainly illegal \u2013 coordination, to the tune of a $15 million in-kind contribution\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Merrill Matthews, a resident scholar at the Institute for Policy Innovation who has written about third-party candidates, pointed to recent reports that Kennedy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2024\/03\/25\/libertarian-candidate-president-robert-kennedy-jr-00148662#:~:text=Kennedy%20is%20not%20a%20libertarian,alliance%20would%20be%20mutually%20beneficial.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>could join the Libertarian Party<\/a> presidential ticket as a complication to his running mate announcement. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf he were able to be the Libertarian candidate, he would likely be on all 50 state tickets and that would give him \u2014 it\u2019s still extremely long shot, I think virtually impossible \u2014 but it would give him a much better chance of being able to draw the votes,\u201d Matthews said.<\/p>\n<p>Shanahan\u2019s history as a Democratic donor may make it harder for Kennedy to become the Libertarian nominee, Matthews said. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you\u2019re going to the Libertarians and the Libertarians have some doubts about you, I would think the wise and prudent person would say, I will nominate a solid longtime libertarian to be my <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/kamala-harris-backed-bail-fund-freed-alleged-domestic-abuser-now-accused-of-murder\/\" title=\"Kamala Harris-Backed Bail Fund Freed Alleged Domestic Abuser Now Accused Of Murder\">vice presidential nominee<\/a>, and that kind of gives you the ticket boost that you need to get over those reserved reservations and that gets you on virtually every state,\u201d he added. <\/p>\n<p>Independent and third-party campaigns have long fought against the burdensome requirements to gain access to each state\u2019s ballot.
