Oversight\u200b Chairman James Comer and Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan demanded the Department of Justice to \u200bproduce responsive materials by April 8. \u2064The report criticized Biden&#8217;s retention of classified records but did not recommend charges.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<p>On Monday, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/topic\/house-republicans\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">House Republicans<\/a> threatened to hold Attorney General <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/topic\/merrick-garland\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Merrick Garland<\/a> in contempt of Congress over materials from special counsel Robert Hur\u2019s investigation into\u00a0President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/topic\/joe-biden\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Joe Biden\u2019s<\/a> handling of classified documents.<\/p>\n<p>Oversight Chairman <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/topic\/james-comer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">James Comer<\/a> (R-KY) and Judiciary Chairman <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/topic\/jim-jordan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jim Jordan<\/a> (R-OH) sent a <a href=\"https:\/\/judiciary.house.gov\/sites\/evo-subsites\/republicans-judiciary.house.gov\/files\/evo-media-document\/2024-03-25%20JDJ%20JC%20to%20DOJ%20re%20Hur%20subpoena%20and%20contempt.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">letter<\/a> to Garland that claimed the Department of Justice (DOJ) is withholding materials that are responsive to their subpoenas, specifically citing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/breaking-gaetz-names-ex-doj-official-he-claims-tried-to-extort-millions-promised-biden-pardon\/\" title=\"BREAKING: Gaetz Names Ex-DOJ Official He Claims Tried To Extort Millions, Promised Biden Pardon\">audio recordings<\/a> of Hur\u2019s interviews with Biden as well as the transcript and audio recordings of Hur\u2019s interviews with Biden\u2019s ghostwriter Mark Zwonitzer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe February 27 subpoenas create a legal obligation on you to produce this material,\u201d Comer and Jordan wrote. \u201cAccordingly, the Committees expect you to produce all responsive materials no later than 12:00 p.m. on April 8, 2024. If you fail to do so, the Committees will consider taking further action, such as the invocation of contempt of Congress proceedings.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Daily Wire reached out to the DOJ seeking comment.<\/p>\n<p>Hur\u2019s report, which was released last month, criticized Biden\u2019s retention of classified records following his service as a U.S. senator and vice president, but the prosecutor declined to recommend charges.<\/p>\n<p>The report described Biden as a \u201csympathetic, well-meaning, elderly man with a poor memory\u201d whom a jury likely would not convict \u201cof a serious felony that requires a mental state of willfulness.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Biden and the White House have pushed back against Hur\u2019s characterizations in his report, but Garland insisted last week that it would have been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/garland-says-censoring-hurs-biden-docs-report-would-have-been-absurd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cabsurd\u201d<\/a> for someone in his position to have edited or censored the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/roger-stone-announces-he-will-sue-those-who-arrested-him-and-put-him-in-front-of-a-kangaroo-court\/\" title=\"Roger Stone Announces He Will Sue Those Who Arrested Him and Put Him In Front of a Kangaroo Court\">special counsel\u2019<\/a>s explanation.<\/p>\n<p>Following the release of Hur\u2019s report, Comer and Jordan <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/house-republicans-subpoena-garland-for-biden-docs-probe-materials\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announced<\/a> they had subpoenaed Garland, declaring in a cover letter that the DOJ failed to produce any of the materials they had previously <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/house-republicans-set-deadline-for-doj-to-produce-biden-docs-probe-materials\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">requested<\/a> \u2014 including transcripts, notes, video, and audio files.<\/p>\n<p>The chairmen suggested that documents retained by Biden may be pertinent to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/white-house-rebuffs-biden-family-loan-repayment-inquiry\/\" title=\"White House rejects inquiry on Biden family 'loan repayment'.\">corruption-focused impeachment inquiry<\/a> into the president and said they wanted to know if the White House or Biden\u2019s personal attorneys placed any limitations or scoping restrictions during the interviews.<\/p>\n<p>Comer and Jordan also wrote the Judiciary Committee sought materials for its oversight of the DOJ\u2019s \u201ccommitment to impartial justice and its handling of the investigation and prosecution of President Biden\u2019s presumptive opponent, President Donald J. Trump, in the November 2024 presidential election.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On the March 7 subpoena deadline, the department provided an \u201cinsufficient production that only included letters exchanged between President Biden\u2019s legal counsel and the Department, along with an offer to review two classified documents in camera,\u201d the lawmakers wrote in their new letter.<\/p>\n<p>Comer and Jordan said they notified the DOJ on March 9 that the production was \u201cinadequate\u201d and demanded the department produce \u201call\u201d materials responsive to their subpoenas by the afternoon of March 11, one day before <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/accusations-fly-as-hur-clashes-with-schiff-on-biden-docs-report\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hur testified<\/a> before the House Judiciary Committee about his investigation.<\/p>\n<p>Yet again, the DOJ \u201cfailed to comply\u201d with their deadline, instead informing committee staff \u201cthat an \u2018interagency review\u2019 for classified and confidential information was still pending,\u201d the lawmakers wrote. A little more than two hours before Hur was scheduled to testify, the DOJ produced two redacted transcripts of the special counsel\u2019s interviews with Biden, they added.<\/p>\n<p><b><a href=\"https:\/\/onelink.to\/dwapp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" aria-describedby=\"sk-tooltip-9096\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/onelink.to\/dwapp&#038;source=gmail&#038;ust=1700760801843000&#038;usg=AOvVaw2PQrVSrJfhxNb4LcARqniG\">CLICK HERE TO GET THE DAILYWIRE+ APP<\/a><\/b><\/p>\n<p>Comer and Jordan noted that news reports indicated that \u201cseveral\u201d news outlets received and reviewed the transcripts of Hur\u2019s interviews with Biden before they were produced to their committees, even though the DOJ indicated that it only completed the \u201cinteragency review\u201d of the transcripts the morning of March 12.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause the Department and the White House were presumably the only two entities with copies of the transcripts before the Committees received them, we can only assume that, for political purposes, the Department and White House provided the transcripts to news outlets before the Department completed its \u201cinteragency review\u201d process,\u201d the lawmakers wrote. \u201cIf that is not the case, we can only assume that the Department misled the Committees about the timing of its completion of such process.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>House Republicans issued a threat to hold Attorney General Merrick Garland in contempt for not disclosing materials from the special counsel&#8217;s investigation into President Biden&#8217;s handling of classified documents.
