The specter of state lawmakers or \u2064even parents hindering or \u200bdiscouraging children from \u201ctransitioning\u201d seems to haunt trans activists, who view recent political efforts to ban so-called \u201cgender-affirming care\u201d \u200cin some\u200d states as the worst sort of tyranny. Children, in their\u2062 view, have\u200d a <em>right<\/em> to transition, and any obstacle placed in their way, even\u200c by parents, is a gross injustice crying \u2062out\u200b for redress.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h3>The Open Declaration<\/h3>\n<p>Up until \u2064recently, this argument was\u200d simmering just \u200cbelow\u200c the surface of the transgender discourse in America. It was the subtext \u200dfirst of the bathroom debate,\u2062 then of the debate over \u2063girls\u2019 sports, then of \u200cthe debate over the role teachers and public schools are playing in \u200dtransing kids socially without informing parents, and\u200c finally of state laws restricting transgender \u2064surgeries, puberty \u200dblockers, \u200band other treatments\u200d for minors.\u2062 In each case, the \u200dunstated \u200bargument was that minors who believe they \u200care trans should \u2064be allowed to transition, socially and medically, and no one,\u2064 not even their parents, should have\u200c the right to\u200d stop them.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2-long d-flex justify-content-center\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center; \" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-1229457210\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1379703300879-0\" class=\"mb-30\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-5a995beab6644a6d2c677eb68bad5e04 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-5a995beab6644a6d2c677eb68bad5e04\"><\/div>\n<p>Now that argument is out \u2064in\u200c the open\u2064 \u2014 \u2062declared\u2063 in bold \u2064black letters against \u2062a \u200bblood-red \u2064field on the <a href=\"https:\/\/nymag.com\/intelligencer\/article\/trans-rights-biological-sex-gender-judith-butler.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">latest cover<\/a> of New York Magazine: \u201cFreedom of Sex, \u200cthe moral case for letting\u2063 trans kids change their bodies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The author of \u200bthe piece is a man \u2063named Andrea Long Chu, the magazine\u2019s Pulitzer \u200bPrize-winning literary critic and \u2063a \u2062self-identified lesbian \u201ctrans woman,\u201d \u2064who by\u200c his own\u200c admission was \u200cpersuaded of this particular gender identity after becoming addicted to pornography \u2014 specifically to something called \u201csissy porn,\u201d which\u2063 encourages men to \u201cfeminize\u201d and\u200b sexually humiliate themselves.<\/p>\n<p>Chu has\u2064 probably \u200bdone more than \u200danyone else in recent years\u200c to mainstream transgenderism, mostly through\u2062 his 2019 book, <em>Females<\/em>, which chronicles his dark \u2063obsession with sissy porn. I won\u2019t quote it here, but suffice it \u2063to say, it makes\u2063 for unpleasant reading (even in small excerpts). To give\u200c you a sense of this person, he was \u200baptly \u200b <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/KeenanPeachy\/status\/1767372547845509595?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">described<\/a> \u2063 by Peachy Keenan\u200d on Twitter this week as \u201ca radical\u2062 trans activist\u200c who is an obese man who now calls himself a lesbian and \u2063has\u200b a neovagina.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>What better spokesman, then, for the\u200d idea that children\u2063 should be\u2062 allowed to undergo an array of surgical procedures and drug therapies, even against\u200b their\u200d parents\u2019 wishes or\u200d without \u2064their knowledge. \u200dChu\u2019s argument relies on holding up bizarre \u2063anecdotes and medical anomalies as normative and quoting radical gender \u200dtheorists from the 1970s. The essay\u2063 itself is weighed down with the intentionally opaque academic jargon of gender studies, which makes reading it an unhappy chore. So I\u2019ll save you\u200b the trouble: His \u200dmain\u2062 point is that\u2063 we need to jettison the idea that youth transgenderism is something that can be diagnosed by medical experts,\u2064 that \u2062it\u200c requires\u200c one to meet any sort of criteria, and\u2064 that it even has\u200d a <em>cause<\/em>. It is simply a fact\u2063 of modern\u2063 life that we must all accept.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-b8fd80cd1593b7aacc1fb9cf9065e553 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-6\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-b8fd80cd1593b7aacc1fb9cf9065e553\"><\/div>\n<p>\u201cWe will never be able\u2064 to defend the rights of transgender \u200bkids\u200c until we understand them purely on their own terms: as full members of\u2064 society who\u200d would \u2064like \u200bto change their sex,\u201d he writes. \u201cWe must be prepared to defend the idea that, in\u200b principle, everyone should have access to sex-changing\u2064 medical care, regardless of age, gender identity, social environment, or psychiatric history.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This is a radical argument that carries an equally radical \u200cagenda. Among other\u2063 things, it means\u2062 there is no \u200cpoint to the\u200c political debates now raging over\u2063 girls\u2019 sports, the legality of \u201cgender-affirming \u200ccare\u201d for youth, and \u2064pretty much everything else related to the transgender movement.\u200c The \u201canti-trans bloc,\u201d writes\u200c Chu, has \u201ctargeted children because Americans tend to imagine children both as\u2064 a font \u2062of pure,\u200c unadulterated humanity and as ignorant \u2064dependents incapable of rational thought or political agency.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Never mind that children by definition are rightly incapable of political agency; \u2063they are in the charge of their\u2063 parents, who exercise\u2064 political agency on\u2063 their behalf. Nor \u200bare\u2063 they entirely capable of rational thought, \u200cwhich is why\u2062 we don\u2019t allow them to \u200cvote or \u200ddrink alcohol or get tattoos.<\/p>\n<p>But such realities are brushed\u2064 aside by Chu, who insists that \u201cthe freedom to bring sex and gender into whatever relation one chooses \u2063is a basic human right,\u201d and that we cannot deny this right to children.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-3f30f3963f9bacc49d76dc42cd05b926 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-10\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-3f30f3963f9bacc49d76dc42cd05b926\"><\/div>\n<p>Interestingly, Chu\u2019s primary \u200dtarget here is liberals, not conservatives \u200c\u2014 readers \u2064of The New York Times and The Atlantic. He calls them \u201ctrans-agnostic reactionary liberal,\u201d or TARLs, whose primary concern is the illiberality of the trans movement itself \u2062and its habit of \u201ctrafficking in censorship, intimidation, \u200dand quasi-religious fanaticism. On trans \u2062people themselves,\u2062 the TARL claims to take no position other than to voice\u2064 his general empathy \u200cfor anyone suffering from \u2062psychological distress or civil-rights violations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>They\u2062 err, he says,\u200b in supposing that there is any psychological distress \u2063behind a \u2064person\u2019s desire to transition, or \u200dthat transitioning is something we should\u2063 tolerate for those who \u2063really need it but certainly not encourage. Reconceiving of transgenderism as a \u200cbasic\u2062 human\u200d right means getting away from that kind of thinking and clearing the public\u2063 square of these\u200d debates entirely.<\/p>\n<p>In practice, he says, this \u200cmeans a\u200c kind of radical <em>laissez-fair<\/em> policy when it comes to things like castration and sterilization and the entire smorgasbord of\u2064 \u201ctreatments\u201d now \u2063on offer for those who identify as transgender. \u201cLet anyone change\u2064 their sex,\u201d says Chu. \u201cLet anyone change their gender. Let anyone change their sex again. Let trans girls play sports, regardless of their sex status. If they excel, this means only that some girls are better at sports\u2062 than others.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There is something deeply\u2062 wrong with the reasoning\u200c here, as if reality \u2063itself \u200ccan offer no resistance to the ideology of self-creation that\u200d Chu would enshrine in our\u200b polity. In\u2063 the concluding paragraphs, he makes statements like, \u201c[I]f children \u2063are too\u2064 young to consent to puberty blockers, then\u2064 they are <em>definitely<\/em> too young to consent \u2063to puberty, which is a drastic biological upheaval \u2062in its own right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The conflation of powerful\u2064 drugs like puberty blockers with\u200c the natural process of puberty is \u200cnot just a \u2064disfigurement of reason, it\u2062 is\u2063 an assault on the idea \u2063that \u2062there is a natural order at\u200d all. It \u200cis a claim of human will and\u200b desire over \u2063and against \u200dreality\u200b itself, an assault on \u2062the \u200c <em>givenness<\/em> of \u200cthe \u2063created order. In secular terms, one might call \u2063it delusional \u200cor fantastic. In Christian terms, one should\u2064 rightly call it Satanic.<\/p>\n<p>Trans kids, writes Chu, \u201care busy taking charge of their own creation\u201d \u2014 that \u2063is, themselves. The idea that we can \u201ccreate\u201d ourselves is popular among trans \u200cactivists, including AI-addled transhumanists. But it\u2019s also popular among ordinary liberals and \u2062unreligious, uncatechized\u2063 modern people who \u2063generally like the idea \u200dthat we all make ourselves into what we are.<\/p>\n<p>Therein lies the strategy behind Chu\u2019s \u200bapproach. He is appealing\u2063 to a bias embedded in the\u200b liberal worldview, an assumption\u2064 that\u200d we are not limited by a created order, much less a Creator. It\u2019s a clever ploy\u2062 because, at the end\u2063 of the day, liberals have no \u200banswer to this argument. They must accept its premise \u2014\u200b that every person can\u200c create his own truth,\u2064 and indeed has a right \u200cto his own truth \u2062\u2014 or fall back on some notion of\u200c natural law, which necessarily implies a created natural order and all \u200cthat\u2064 it entails.<\/p>\n<p>Chu and the \u200dtrans movement\u200d for\u200c which he speaks are betting that liberals will not be able to\u2062 resist\u200c what amounts to an extension of liberals\u2019 own\u2062 logic. They are \u200cbetting,\u2064 smartly, that most of them lack the theological \u2064vocabulary to apprehend the old lie from the Garden, \u2063now disguised in the modern verbiage of rights \u200band identities: You will not surely \u2064die, \u200cyou will become\u2064 like God.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\">\n<\/div>\n<p> <\/p>\n<h2> What are the potential consequences of allowing children to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/sotu-joe-biden-touts-child-transgender-treatments\/\" title=\"SOTU: Joe Biden Touts Child Transgender Treatments\">make life-altering medical decisions<\/a> for themselves, without parental involvement\u2062 or guidance?<\/h2>\n<p><span>  Onsent to medical treatments,\u200d they \u2062should be\u2062 \u200dallowed\u2064 to \u201cexercise their freedom to enlist a parent,\u2062 doctor, or\u2009\u2014\u2009dare I suggest\u2009\u2014\u2009law enforcement\u2063 officer to assist them in\u200b \u200dobtaining what they need.\u201d This suggests a complete disregard for\u2064 parental authority and the well-being \u200dof children, as if \u200bthey \u200care simply commodities to be manipulated and controlled by outside forces.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, Chu\u2019s argument completely ignores the fact \u2063that children are in a state of development, both physically and mentally. Their understanding \u200bof gender \u200dand \u200didentity is still forming, and\u2064 it is irresponsible \u2064to make \u200clife-altering decisions for them at such a young age. The consequences of irreversible medical\u2064 procedures and hormone therapies\u2063 can have \u200b<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/majority-of-voters-support-state-laws-protecting-children-from-trans-procedures-poll\/\" title=\"Poll: Most voters back state laws safeguarding children from transgender procedures\">significant long-term effects<\/a> on their physical and mental health.<\/p>\n<p>It is important to recognize that protecting children does not equate to hindering their self-expression or\u2063 denying their identity. \u200cThere \u200dare respectful \u2064and thoughtful ways to support children who may be questioning\u2063 their\u2063 gender identity \u2064without resorting to drastic measures. This can include creating safe spaces\u200d for open dialogue, providing accessible mental\u2064 health support, and \u200cfostering an inclusive and accepting environment where all children feel valued and\u2064 understood.<\/p>\n<p>While the transgender rights movement \u200dadvocates for equality \u200cand acceptance, it is\u2063 crucial to approach the\u200c issue of children and transitioning with caution \u2062and prudence. We must prioritize their well-being \u2064and ensure that they have the\u2062 necessary\u200d guidance and support from trusted adults. It is\u200b not a \u200dmatter of denying \u200btheir rights, but rather a \u2063matter of protecting their best interests and safeguarding them \u200cfrom \u2064potential \u2062harm.<\/p>\n<p>Ultimately, the debate around transgender rights and children is complex and\u200c multifaceted. \u2064It requires careful consideration\u2063 of\u200b ethical, medical, and\u200d psychological factors, \u2064as well\u2064 as an understanding \u2062of\u200c the developmental \u2063stages\u200d and needs of children.
