However, none of the Democratic witnesses were able to definitively state \u200bthat they believe only citizens should be able to vote.<\/p>\n<p>The Executive Director\u200d of The Lawyers&#8217; Committee for Civil Rights\u200d Under Law, Damon T. \u2063Hewitt, responded by saying, \u2064&#8221;We\u2062 don&#8217;t have a position\u2064 about non-citizens voting in federal elections, we believe that&#8217;s what the \u2064current laws are, and so we&#8217;re certainly fighting for everyone\u2063 who is eligible \u200dunder current law to vote.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Lydia Camarillo, President of Southwest Voter Registration Education Project, emphasized that the decision of who should vote in federal elections is determined by state law.\u200d She added, &#8220;I believe that we should be encouraging people to naturalize and then vote.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>When pressed by Sen. Lee about whether the \u2064federal government should have a say in who votes in a federal election, Camarillo responded, &#8220;I don&#8217;t have \u2064a position on that.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Sophia Lin Lakin, Director of the ACLU&#8217;s Voting Rights Project, stated that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/walsh-no-it-isnt-easier-to-buy-a-gun-than-vote-but-it-should-be\/\" title=\"WALSH: No, It Isn\u2019t Easier To Buy A Gun Than Vote. But It Should Be.\u00a0\">federal law prohibits<\/a> non-citizens from voting in federal elections, and their focus is on enabling all\u2064 eligible voters \u2062to cast their ballot.<\/p>\n<p>Only two \u200cwitnesses, Maureen Riordan from the Public Interest Legal Foundation \u2063and Hans von\u200b Spakovsky from\u200b the Heritage Foundation, both Republicans, firmly stated that they do not believe non-citizens should be able to vote.<\/p>\n<p>Sen. Lee also asked the witnesses whether people registering to vote \u2063should provide documentary proof \u200dof their citizenship. Hewitt\u200c responded by emphasizing the impact of asking for proof of\u2064 citizenship, while Camarillo called the question redundant, stating that it is already being asked.<\/p>\n<p>Currently, federal law\u2064 only requires voters to check a box indicating their U.S. \u200ccitizenship on\u2063 a form,\u200d without providing any proof. Lakin argued that asking\u200d for documentary proof of citizenship is often discriminatory.<\/p>\n<p>Sen. Lee expressed \u200bhis \u200bconcern that not all witnesses \u200ccould simply answer &#8220;yes&#8221; to both of his questions.
