Our\u2062 idea of a good time is relaxing on\u2063 the beach,\u200d hitting up a spa, or checking\u200d out a new restaurant. You just \u200dwant to get drunk in public and\u2063 ignore laws. \u2026 Don\u2019t try to apologize and come crawling back. This \u2063isn\u2019t safe. Two people were fatally shot\u200d in separate incidents that caused stampedes in crowded streets.<\/p>\n<p>The experience went further past \u200bthe horrors that the town has \u2064witnessed in years past, according to Miami Beach Police Chief Wayne Jones.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cWe have been struggling with\u200d spring break for quite some time,\u201d\u2064 Jones\u200c said during a Feb. 15 press conference. \u201cEssentially we want to divorce ourselves from Spring Break.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>This year, visitors will face $100 flat parking rates at select city-operated lots on the weekends, DUI\u2062 checkpoints, and $516\u2063 vehicle towing rates.<\/p>\n<p>Sidewalk cafes\u200d on Ocean Drive will be closed \u2064two weekends, this past one and the upcoming one, in an attempt to limit people\u2019s ability to \u2064drink at\u2064 restaurants and to protect the businesses and staff.<\/p>\n<p>Liquor stores will shut \u200cdown at 8 p.m. \u200beach night and businesses that rent out golf carts, motorized scooters, and mopeds\u200b will not be allowed to \u2063operate between March 7-10 and March 14-17.<\/p>\n<p>Miami Beach Mayor Steven Meiner said all of the\u200d changes were approved\u2063 by the \u2064city commission and law enforcement will merely be enforcing what lawmakers have mandated as law.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cThe measures I proposed approved by our commission will ensure that our residents,\u2064 businesses, and visitors \u2064are safe and thrive during spring break,\u201d said \u200dMeiner during the press conference.\u2062 \u201cEveryone is invited to enjoy the beauty and hospitality of our \u2062city. But we are a law and \u200dorder city, and we will enforce our laws \u200call\u200c year round, including during March\u2019s spring\u2064 break.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) has backed the city and announced earlier this month plans to send in state troopers\u200d to the beach town.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t welcome mayhem,\u201d DeSantis said during a March 5 \u200cpress conference in Miami. \u201cThe state has a lot going on. It\u2019s a \u200bfun place to be at and we want to see people do that, but \u200dwe also are going to insist that people respect the law.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>DeSantis said a total of 17 cities,\u2064 towns,\u2063 and counties have requested backup law enforcement from the\u200b state to help \u200bwith an influx of spring breakers this week. Nearly \u200c60 state troopers have been deployed to Miami Beach.<\/p>\n<p>This week, the town was in good shape as of Monday morning, according to footage taken by\u2062 NBC News\u2019s The Today Show.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>The crackdown on spring breakers in Miami Beach has \u2064helped reduce \u2063unruly crowds and fatal shootings \u2014 but\u2062 it is also having an impact on local businesses. @SamBrockNBC \u2064reports.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The city attempted in 2021 to crack down \u2064amid less serious unruly\u200c behavior and was met by pushback\u2062 from local \u2064black leaders. The National Association for The Advancement\u200c of Colored \u2064People (NAACP) accused the city of targeting a bloc \u2063of the\u200b population.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re met with heavy \u2062police presence, \u200cright? They\u2019re met with street closures. \u2064They\u2019re met with closed parking lots,\u201d said Miami-Dade NAACP President Daniella Pierre at the time. \u201cWhat are you targeting?
