But after they win the Tuesday night primaries, they are expected to clear\u200c the threshold to\u200d do so comfortably.<\/p>\n<h3>ELECTION 2024:\u200c FOLLOW LATEST COVERAGE<\/h3>\n<p>By Tuesday night,\u200c Trump will have surpassed the 1,215 \u200bdelegates needed to become the GOP nominee.\u200c He \u2062hovers at 1,075 \u200cdelegates, \u2064while\u2062 Biden, at 1,866 delegates, will also surpass the 1,968 delegates needed to become the \u2064Democratic nominee, setting the stage for \u200da repeat of the 2020 election.<\/p>\n<p>Trump easily outlasted more than a dozen Republican\u2063 primary challengers, \u2062with the last\u200b one, his\u2063 first \u2064ambassador to the United Nations, Nikki Haley, dropping out of the race the day after Super Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>Biden never faced serious Democratic challengers, though Rep. \u2064Dean Phillips (D-MN) made some headlines\u200b in New Hampshire, and author \u2064Marianne Williamson suspended \u2063then unsuspended\u2062 her campaign when\u200d she won \u200c3%\u200d of the vote during the Michigan primary.<\/p>\n<p>Neither Phillips nor \u200bWilliamson\u2019s efforts\u200c will block Biden\u2064 from the nomination.<\/p>\n<p>The Biden-Trump rematch is a feat that hasn\u2019t \u200bhappened in American history since 1956 when former Republican President\u2064 Dwight\u2064 D. Eisenhower defeated former Democratic Illinois \u2064Gov. Adlai Stevenson \u2062for the second time. The first \u2064time was in 1952.<\/p>\n<p>The presidential rematch has only\u200d happened in U.S. history seven times. \u200dBefore the Eisenhower-Stevenson battles, former Republican President William McKinley and Democrat\u200b William Jennings\u2063 Bryan faced off in \u20641896 and 1900. Bryan lost both times.<\/p>\n<p>But \u200cmuch has changed in \u200dthe\u200d 68 years since\u2064 the Eisenhower-Stevenson race.<\/p>\n<p>Trump and Biden are the two oldest\u200c presidential nominees in\u200b American history. The American public has\u2064 long voiced their weariness toward a rematch, and combined with an unusually early \u200dgeneral election season, 2024 could\u200c be one of the most exhausting election cycles in recent years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe stage is set for what is possibly the longest \u200dgeneral election season in American history,\u201d said David Capen, president of Capen Consulting. \u201cTrump and Biden have very different ideologies, and both \u200care on up there in age. Their campaigns will be more \u2062about mobilizing \u200bvoters and less to do \u200cwith persuasion of what we used to call \u2018swing voters\u2019 \u2014 they don\u2019t really exist anymore when it comes to\u2064 presidential\u2064 politics. It will be a marathon, not a sprint,\u2064 between now and November.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In\u200d many ways, Trump is running\u2063 to avenge his 2020 loss to\u2064 Biden. But, as he battles 91 criminal charges across four cases,\u2063 with \u2064two of the cases related\u2064 to\u2064 alleged attempts to \u200coverturn the election, the former president will need to avoid a\u200c felony \u200dconviction, which could cost him just enough\u2062 votes to lose to Biden again. Trump is hoping \u200dto delay the trials until after the November election.<\/p>\n<p>Trump will also\u2063 need to \u2063convince \u2063the small but still sizable number \u200cof Haley supporters, many of\u2062 whom are independents and moderate Republicans, to vote for the GOP\u200b ticket after a bruising primary season.<\/p>\n<p>But Republican leaders claim Trump will prevail among Republicans who are skeptical of the former president.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo I think that we\u2019re going to be missing major coalitions or\u200d major groups of votes come November because of what happened in the last\u200c several weeks? I don\u2019t,\u201d said \u200bchairman of the Wisconsin\u200c GOP Brian Schimming. \u201cI feel like it\u2019s going\u2062 to come \u2063together pretty \u2063well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Biden is hoping to convince concerned voters that at 81 and the\u200d oldest serving U.S. president, he still has the stamina to serve in office for another four years.<\/p>\n<p>The centrist group No Labels is \u2062attempting a third-party unity ticket to give voters another option, but it is\u200c unclear which \u2063candidates would\u2062 lead the charge. Haley declined to run with the group, as have other potential candidates including Sen.\u2064 Mitt Romney (R-UT), Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV),\u2064 and former Republican Maryland Gov.
