After several attempts to\u200c reverse the change, 12 chapters suggested amendments that\u2062 would require members to &#8220;have the biological characteristics of a female in\u200c the \u200bcontext of reproductive potential or capacity such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/debunking-the-aclus-ridiculous-myths-and-facts-about-transgender-athletes\/\" title=\"Debunking The ACLU\u2019s Ridiculous \u2018Myths And Facts\u2019 About Transgender Athletes\">sex chromosomes<\/a> and naturally occurring sex hormones.&#8221; They\u2062 also asked the national \u200dorganization to &#8220;remove\u200b all \u2062non-discrimination policy \u2064language&#8221;\u2063 about potential\u2064 members and require members to\u2064 offer original birth certificate or DNA proof that they are females.<\/p>\n<p>The proposal easily satisfied the national bylaw demands that at \u2062least 10\u200c chapters from five states offer endorsements for \u2063the amendments to attain national review.\u200b Yet on Feb. 10, DAR&#8217;s National Board of Management rejected \u2064the endorsement in an almost unanimous vote.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Hit Them Where It \u200bHurts<\/h2>\n<p>When \u2062the DAR went public \u200bwith the &#8220;additional non<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/blackburn-gofundmes-actions-against-freedom-convoy-discriminatory\/\" title=\"Blackburn: GoFundMe's Actions Against Freedom Convoy 'Discriminatory'\">-discrimination language<\/a>&#8221; amendment at its 132nd \u2064Continental Congress last\u2063 year, several members decided to leave the society by either resigning or refusing\u2063 to pay dues. The Nevada Sagebrush Chapter alone lost \u200dat least nine women, including its former \u200csecretary Brenda \u2064Becker. She estimates a \u200bDAR membership drop across the\u2063 United States\u2062 as between 14 and\u2064 18 percent since last year.<\/p>\n<p>Becker \u2062stuck out her membership long enough to join a coalition of chapters that asked the National Bylaws Committee in October to \u2063revert the bylaw. But when \u2063DAR President General Pamela Rouse Wright confirmed, shortly before the board decided on the reversion proposal, \u2064that men masquerading as women could join the female society, Becker knew it was time to go.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;People \u2062are not as interested in the DAR in\u2062 the big picture because they see us as being older women. We&#8217;re not \u2064like Riley \u200dGaines out there with all the attention. But \u2063there are 190,000 \u2062or 185,000\u2064 members\u2063 in DAR.\u200b I mean, that&#8217;s \u2062a \u2063lot \u2064of people,&#8221; Becker said.<\/p>\n<p>Others, like McDermott, are contemplating\u200d whether to stay and fight DAR nationals over the policy shift or resign from\u200c the\u2064 organization they&#8217;ve known and loved for years.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m having\u200d a difficult time with my decision \u200bto stay\u200b or go. If I go,\u2064 I can&#8217;t\u2064 fight, but if I stay,\u200b I&#8217;m going against my\u2064 beliefs,&#8221; McDermott said. &#8220;God created man\u2063 and woman, and there&#8217;s only two,\u200c so being with\u200d an organization that \u2063is\u2064 accepting \u200dmultiple genders goes against \u2064my belief in God.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>McDermott said she loves spending time with her\u200d local chapter volunteering \u200bbecause it gives her community \u2064and\u2062 support, especially after\u200d she \u2064became\u200d a \u200cwidow. The problem\u2062 with continuing membership, she \u200csaid, \u200bis that most of her dues will go to\u200b support nationals and their policies.<\/p>\n<p>Because of the DAR&#8217;s trickle-down system, McDermott&#8217;s Liberty Bell chapter will be forced to adopt the new bylaws and could be asked to accept male\u2063 members soon.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I think until it financially hits\u2063 them, that they have really made a mistake, it&#8217;s not going \u200dto make a difference to them. If it hits them\u2064 in the pocketbook, maybe that would make\u2062 a \u2062difference. That&#8217;s the other reason I&#8217;d leave,&#8221; McDermott said<\/p>\n<p>Becker said \u200cthere is some talk of &#8220;having an informational picket or \u200dprotests&#8221; during DAR&#8217;s Continental Congress \u200bthis summer. \u2063Until then, ex-members and members with concerns about the society&#8217;s desire to become more &#8220;inclusive&#8221; \u2062will continue protesting the decision to allow males in an explicitly and historically \u2063female organization.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s so discouraging \u200dthat it&#8217;s something\u200c that I always\u2063 was proud to be \u2063a member of because\u200d I am a patriot and that&#8217;s a very special thing.
