With the\u200c election being closely contested, the stakes were high. The president, who\u200b has been trailing in the polls to his arch-nemesis \u200dDonald Trump, simply needed to appear alive and\u200d normal.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, he only managed to accomplish the former. It&#8217;s puzzling to think what his \u2064team was thinking when they wrote his \u2063address. It \u200bturned out to be divisive, \u200cpolarizing, and downright nasty. Did they believe that pumping him up with excessive energy would compensate for his lack of normalcy?<\/p>\n<p>Whatever cocktail they used to awaken him, it was clearly too much.<\/p>\n<p>The address quickly\u2062 became a disaster in the making, although Democrats are now pretending to have loved it. But let&#8217;s be honest, they were always going to pretend. The media, too, was always going to use words like &#8220;feisty,&#8221; &#8220;energetic,&#8221; and &#8220;combative&#8221; to describe\u2063 it. It \u2064was a foregone \u2063conclusion.<\/p>\n<p>But if you were an average voter, someone deciding between Biden and Trump, watching that speech must have raised some \u2063serious doubts. Did it make you think that our country is in the \u2062best hands? \u200bOr did it make you think that an angry old \u2064man was screaming at clouds, believing that many Americans are terrible people and having his priorities completely skewed?<\/p>\n<p>There are many independent voters who will look at Biden&#8217;s performance and conclude that if the Democrats were\u200c trying to present a contrast between &#8220;crazy Trump&#8221; and &#8220;solid, stolid Joe,&#8221; they missed the mark politically.<\/p>\n<h3>The Lead-Up: Chaos and Incoherence<\/h3>\n<p>Even before the \u200daddress began, a group of pro-Hamas individuals blocked Biden&#8217;s \u200bmotorcade in the middle \u2062of the street. It&#8217;s concerning that he has been catering to these people, suggesting\u2062 that their passion is the issue rather than their support for a terror group. And on the most-watched night of the presidential year, he allowed his motorcade to be blocked by these\u2063 nutjobs who advocate for mass rape and murder.<\/p>\n<p>But that was \u200djust the beginning.<\/p>\n<p>Biden&#8217;s speech started off \u200cangry, energetic, \u2062and coherent. However, it quickly descended into angry incoherence, with moments of loud rambling followed by whispering as his energy waned. It became evident that the \u2064drugs \u2062he had taken were \u200dwearing off about 40 minutes into his address.<\/p>\n<p>Typically, a president\u200b opens their address with a broad statement like &#8220;The state of our union is strong.&#8221; They highlight the greatness of America before addressing its challenges. But Biden took a different approach. He began\u200b with a harangue against Republicans regarding Ukraine, portraying himself as the epitome \u200bof \u2062democracy and labeling his opponents as fascists who side with Putin.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><i>&#8220;In January 1941, President Franklin Roosevelt came to this chamber to speak to the nation. \u200dHe said, &#8216;I address \u2064you\u2063 in a moment, unprecedented in the history of the union.&#8217; Hitler was on the march. War\u200c was raging in Europe. President\u2062 Roosevelt\u2019s purpose\u2063 was to wake up Congress and alert the American people that this was no ordinary moment. Tonight I come to the same chamber\u2064 to\u200b address the nation. Now it is we \u2062who face an unprecedented moment in the history of the Union. And \u2063yes, my purpose tonight is to wake up this Congress, and alert the American people that this is no ordinary moment either. Not since President Lincoln and the Civil War have freedom and democracy been under assault at home as they are today.&#8221;<\/i><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>His excuse \u2064for\u2063 his shortcomings as a president was that he is facing the two most historic\u2063 crises of the last two centuries: World War II and the Civil War. But let&#8217;s be clear, we are not currently experiencing the horrors of\u2064 those times. We are not killing \u200beach other by the hundreds of thousands or holding people in bondage. We are\u2063 not fighting a global war against Nazis and\u2062 their allies.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s clear \u2062that Biden&#8217;s comparison is a desperate attempt to \u200cdeflect from his own governance. \u2062He claims \u2063there is a war on democracy, but the only reason for that is to attack Donald Trump.<\/p>\n<p>Instead of \u2063addressing pressing issues like the border crisis or inflation, Biden fixated on Ukraine. His intention was to label anyone who disagreed with him as a threat\u200b to democracy, equating them with Putin&#8217;s \u200cactions in Ukraine.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><i>&#8220;My message \u200bto President Putin is \u200csimple. We will not walk away. We will\u2062 not bow down. I will not bow down. History is watching, just like history watched three years ago on January 6th. Insurrectionists\u2063 stormed this very Capitol and placed a dagger to the throat of American democracy. &#8230; But we\u2063 must be honest, the threat remains and democracy must be defended. My predecessor and some of \u200cyou here \u200cseek to bury the truth about January 6th. I\u200b will \u200bnot do that. This is a moment to\u200d speak the truth and bury the lies. And here\u2019s the simple truth. You can\u2019t love your country only when you\u2062 win.&#8221;<\/i><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Comparing January 6th to \u200cthe Russian invasion of Ukraine is not\u200c only insulting to Ukrainians but also a\u200d gross exaggeration. January 6th was a small riot, resulting in the tragic death of one person. It was not a dagger at \u200cthe throat of democracy. Yet Biden needs to blow it out of proportion to fuel his reelection campaign.<\/p>\n<p>His routine of fearmongering and exaggeration is tiresome.<\/p>\n<h3>The Hysterical Narrative<\/h3>\n<p>Biden&#8217;s reelection depends on convincing moderate and independent\u200d voters that if Trump returns to power, democracy\u2062 will \u200dcrumble. He\u200c wants you to believe \u200bthat Trump is an autocrat, just like Putin.<\/p>\n<p>But\u2063 let&#8217;s be clear: no rational person believed that democracy in the United States \u200dwas about to be overthrown on January 6th. It was an ugly incident, with some individuals committing criminal acts. However, within hours, the situation was \u200cunder control,\u200c and the election was certified by the Republican vice president and majority leader.<\/p>\n<p>Biden&#8217;s argument is nothing more than hysterical nonsense.
