In a bold move, the \u200cDemocrat governor has deployed 750 National Guard troops to patrol the New York\u200b City subway, accompanied by 250 state and local police officers \u200cwho\u2064 will\u200d conduct random bag checks. This mobilization comes in response to a \u2062concerning increase\u2063 in violent crime\u200b within the\u200c subway system.<\/p>\n

Hochul stated, “These\u200d brazen heinous \u2063attacks on our \u2064subway system will \u2064not be tolerated. \u200bNo one should have to worry about \u2064sitting next to\u2064 someone carrying a deadly\u2062 weapon while they’re on \u2063their way \u2063to work, visiting family, \u200bor going to a doctor’s appointment.”<\/p>\n

This deployment of troops can be seen as a heightened version of the controversial \u200dstop-and-frisk policy, which haunted former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s 2020\u200d presidential \u200bcampaign. Bloomberg withdrew from the race before the death \u2064of \u200cGeorge Floyd, an incident that fueled animosity towards law enforcement. The riots that followed Floyd’s death resulted in significantly more\u2064 damage than the Capitol riot on January 6, 2021.<\/p>\n

During the riots, Republican \u2062Senator Tom\u2063 Cotton of \u200cArkansas penned an op-ed for The New \u2063York Times, urging then-President Donald Trump to “Send in the Troops” and \u200dutilize the military to \u2064restore\u2063 peace. \u2064Cotton argued that\u200c while the American\u2064 people recognize societal injustices, maintaining public order and safety is the\u200b government’s fundamental\u200b responsibility.<\/p>\n

The \u2064publication of Cotton’s op-ed\u200b sparked\u2062 outrage among New York Times activists, who\u2064 claimed it put black staffers in danger. The paper’s union even called the article a threat to the safety of the journalists they represent, leading to\u200d the resignation of the editor who published the piece, \u200cJames Bennet.<\/p>\n
