John Cornyn, R-Texas, is the first to announce<\/a> his\u2062 campaign to replace \u2062Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., as\u200d the Senate\u2019s Republican leader.\u2063 The race for leadership will expose a weakness of Cornyn \u2014 his lack of support for \u200bAmericans\u2019 right to self-defense. \u201cEvery time gun control gains steam in Congress, Senator John Cornyn is right \u2064there working with Democrats on a \u2018compromise,’\u201d says<\/a> Aidan Johnston with Gun Owners Of America. Unfortunately, Johnston is correct.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
Cornyn sponsored the 2022 Bipartisan \u2062Safer Communities Act (BSCA) and \u2062was responsible for \u2063negotiating the deal with Senate \u2064Democrats.\u200b \u201cMore than any other senator, Cornyn is responsible \u2064for shepherding the landmark legislation \u2063through a chamber,\u201d as The Texas Tribune described<\/a> it.\u200c Cornyn was reportedly motivated by \u2062the desire to prevent another Uvalde school massacre.\u2063 However, the final bill turned out to be nothing short of a disaster, and the changes in background checks would do nothing to stop that attack.<\/p>\n

Soon after the BSCA passed, Texas Republicans understood \u200cwhat the \u200blaw\u2019s ramifications meant and vigorously<\/a> \u2063 booed Cornyn during\u2062 his speech at the state party convention.<\/p>\n
The bill allowed the Biden administration to \u2062 push rules<\/a> that would forbid federal funding\u2064 for schools that have \u2063hunting or archery classes. Fortunately, when that \u2062became \u2062clear, Congress voted overwhelmingly<\/a> to undo that\u200c part of the BSCA.<\/p>\n
But more damaging are the law\u2019s provisions allowing Biden \u2064to impose the Democrats\u2019 long-desired wish list on background checks on all\u200b private transfers\u200b and sales for guns, something that\u2062 will help \u200dthem put\u200d together a more complete national gun registry of law-abiding Americans.<\/p>\n
Although federal law explicitly prohibits the\u200b creation of a federal firearm\u200c registry, the \u2062Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, \u2064Firearms, and\u200d Explosives (ATF) published a 108-page<\/a> proposal at \u2062the end \u200dof August that would allow the Biden administration to use the bill\u200c to require \u2064universal background checks on all gun \u200dtransfers and to\u200c track virtually everyone who obtains a gun. To make\u2064 things even worse, ATF\u200c whistleblowers leaked<\/a> that the proposal had grown to \u20641,300 pages a \u2063month ago.<\/p>\n

By early 2021, the ATF created<\/a> a \u2064digital database containing almost a \u200cbillion firearm transactions. To fill in \u200cthe\u200d blanks, Biden<\/a> pressured credit card \u200ccompanies to track firearm\u200c purchases. The Bank of America<\/a> has already \u200dgiven customers\u2019 gun purchase data to the FBI without a warrant\u200b or\u2064 probable cause.<\/p>\n
Biden used \u2064the BSCA to make a \u200btiny, seemingly trivial change in existing law. The federal government previously classified people as \u201cgun dealers,\u201d requiring them to get a\u2062 license if they sold \u200cguns\u200d \u201cwith the\u2063 principal objective of livelihood and\u200d profit.\u201d The language in the BSCA reads: \u201cpredominantly earn a profit.\u201d<\/p>\n
The initial proposal put out by \u2063the Biden administration classifies you \u200das a \u200dgun dealer<\/a> if you sell\u200b a \u2063friend a gun once and discuss with them the sale of a second gun. Other rules cover\u200b you if \u200byou sell one gun and \u2062keep any record of what you bought\u200b and sold \u200bit for. The list\u2063 goes on, and the leakers say \u200cthe new regulations \u200dare much more extensive and will effectively ban gun sales since all \u2064purchasers will have to become \u2062licensed gun\u200d dealers or go to licensed dealers. It \u200cis all part of the\u200b Biden\u2064 administration\u2019s\u200b plan to complete\u2062 its national gun registry.<\/p>\n
While Biden is redefining \u200ceveryone as\u2064 a firearms dealer, Cornyn knew that Biden\u2019s\u2062 zero-tolerance policy for paperwork typos was putting thousands<\/a> of dealers out of business.<\/p>\n

Take the case of Tom Harris, who owns the Sporting Arms \u2064Co. in Lewisville, Texas<\/a>, a disabled\u2064 father of five who made\u200c a\u200b couple of small \u200dpaperwork mistakes \u200b16 and 17 years \u200bago. Even\u2062 the ATF under President Barack Obama cleared\u200c Harris, and he has made no mistakes since then. But \u200dthe \u200dBiden administration reopened these old closed cases.<\/p>\n
When Biden sold<\/a> his \u200dzero-tolerance policy by claiming: \u201cIf you willfully sell a gun to someone who is prohibited from possessing it, if you\u200b willfully fail to run a background check, if you willfully falsify a record, if you willfully fail to cooperate with\u200d the tracing requests or inspections, my message to \u200cyou is this: We\u2019ll find you, and\u200c we will \u2062seek your license to\u2062 sell guns.\u201d Harris and others are \u2063not purposefully selling guns to criminals, but the government is coming for their licenses anyway.<\/p>\n
The Biden administration \u2063pushes \u200duniversal background checks \u2064and a gun registry \u200das \u2064needed to solve crime. The new ATF rules focus<\/a> on tracing guns\u200b used in crimes. In theory, if a criminal \u2064leaves a gun at a crime scene,\u200b police can trace the \u200dgun back to him. But outside of television crime shows, things don\u2019t work that\u200c way.<\/p>\n
Registration is useful for one purpose: confiscating guns.\u2063 Australia, Canada, and\u2063 the U.K. aren\u2019t the only places using registration to ban and\u200b confiscate \u2064guns. California, \u2063Chicago, and Washington, D.C., also used registration to know who legally owned certain types of guns before banning them, and\u200b Biden continues to \u2064call<\/a> for a ban on all semi-automatic guns.<\/p>\n
The ATF has been having a\u2062 rough\u2062 time recently in the courts with its attempts to redefine terms already well-defined in the law. \u200cBut thanks to Cornyn, the BSCA got around those obstacles and opened the door to a \u2063Democrat wish list \u2063of new\u200d gun-control regulations that will endanger \u2063lives.<\/p>\n
