Her lawyers \u2062said\u200c she \u2064ultimately obtained \u2063an abortion out of\u2062 state.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h3>Providing Hope\u2062 and Compassion<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Mothers like\u2063 Cox are often not informed \u2063that\u200c children diagnosed with \u200bTrisomy 18 and \u200bother life-limiting conditions can sometimes \u2063thrive into\u2062 their \u2063early twenties.\u2064 Instead, many women are \u2064presented with induced abortion as the first or best course of action \u200bin the face of such \u200ba \u200dprenatal diagnosis.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2-long d-flex justify-content-center\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center; \" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-1034289942\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1379703300879-0\" class=\"mb-30\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-96bdfdc61096d232cfbf48b05c073c5c fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-96bdfdc61096d232cfbf48b05c073c5c\"><\/div>\n<p>The \u2064very first words these expecting\u2064 mothers deserve to hear are those of hope, encouragement, \u2062and compassion.\u2062 As a board-certified obstetrician\/gynecologist, I\u2019ve accompanied many patients through these challenging moments with a focus on holistic options and resources\u200d to\u200d alleviate their fears and remind them\u200c that every life has value, even if outwardly imperfect in society\u2019s eye.<\/p>\n<p>How a doctor engages patients \u200cin these challenging situations can either help \u2062alleviate their fear \u200dor increase it. \u200dResearch shows,\u2063 for example, that it\u2019s important when \u2064delivering \u2062news of a\u2063 prenatal diagnosis \u200cthat physicians use a trauma-informed approach that acknowledges many women\u2019s grief over the \u200cdiagnosis and subdues the fight, flight, or\u200c freeze response they often experience in the moment. At the same time, physicians must lovingly convey \u2063the liberating truth: \u2064that sons \u200bor daughters \u200bborn\u2062 with health conditions are just as integral to their families as healthy\u2062 babies, no matter how brief their\u2063 time together.<\/p>\n<p>I begin \u2062my patient consultations by offering both compassion and hope\u200b to women who receive a life-limiting \u2062prenatal diagnosis. I empathize with those who receive\u200c the news that their child is going to require life-long care.\u2063 About 17 years ago, my own son,\u2062 Max, was diagnosed\u2064 with autism, speech-motor apraxia, and an intellectual disability \u200b\u2014 conditions requiring \u200caround-the-clock\u200b care.<\/p>\n<p>I next make a point to carefully explain how the \u200bdiagnosis\u2063 might\u200b affect the mother\u2019s pregnancy. She may require additional monitoring and ultrasounds, or a change\u2063 in\u2064 the route \u200bor \u2062timing of her delivery. We also discuss resources available \u200dsuch as perinatal palliative care, peer support,\u2064 and developing a birth plan, which includes an \u200bunderstanding of the\u200b decisions regarding labor, birth, and the care of her baby. While these considerations are\u2062 difficult to address, discussing them openly acknowledges the\u2063 humanity\u2063 of\u2062 the child\u200b and empowers mothers \u2063with\u2064 the\u200d knowledge \u2063they need to make decisions at\u2062 each step of their journey.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-59a412db579127080e0726bd700fde55 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-6\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-59a412db579127080e0726bd700fde55\"><\/div>\n<p>Not once have I\u200c ever encountered a woman who regretted her decision to give birth to\u200c a child\u200c who had an \u2063adverse prenatal diagnosis.\u2064 One mother expecting\u200c twin boys, one with a life-limiting \u200dcondition,\u200d was initially too afraid to look at\u200b her son when he was born, knowing \u200dthat he\u2063 would soon die. Immediately after his birth, however, love for her\u2063 son surpassed her fear, and her son spent his last moments\u200b in his \u2064loving mother\u2019s arms as she delivered her second twin.<\/p>\n<p>Many families who\u200d give their children a chance to survive despite the odds also come to realize that their children \u200dwith \u200ddisabilities are\u200c a blessing to everyone around them. Max\u2019s developmental \u2062challenges and joyful\u200c personality have led \u2062my family to grow in generosity and love for \u200beach\u2062 other. We are \u201cTeam \u2062Max!\u201d\u2062 Max has\u200c made us better people, just as he has done with the non-disabled peers he interacts with at\u200c school.<\/p>\n<p>Max belongs in our family, his school,\u200c and our community just as much as those\u2064 who do \u200dnot have disabilities. It\u2019s \u2062appalling that many\u200b children\u2062 who are celebrated for \u2064their diversity and\u200b provided legal accessibility at school do not receive the same inclusive treatment when they\u2062 are diagnosed with a life-limiting condition in the womb,\u200b where they are too often treated like disposable commodities instead.<\/p>\n<p>Likewise, physicians who are too quick to encourage\u2063 abortion do\u200c women a grave disservice: They complicate women\u2019s grief \u200dover the loss of\u2063 what\u200b they\u2062 thought their sons or daughters\u2019\u2062 lives\u200c would look like. Whether\u2063 it be\u2062 the\u2063 palliative care teams who can \u200bhelp families \u2063through \u2063the grieving process of\u2064 losing a child soon\u200b after birth or the agencies and programs that can help families through the long-term caretaking needs of a child with special needs, \u2064society\u200d must focus on\u2063 strengthening these resources\u2064 instead of turning to \u2064the false solution of \u2063induced abortion.
