Adams\u2019 efforts are supported by New York Democratic Governor Kathy Hochul, who committed state resources to the crackdown.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWe are going to continuously make sure we show a visible presence to deal with how people are feeling in our subway system right now,\u201d Adams said, according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnewyork.com\/news\/local\/nypd-subway-crime-security-check\/5196047\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">NBC New York<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. \u201cWhen I ride, people say, \u2018Eric, nothing makes me feel safer than seeing that officer walking through the system, walking trains.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The city intends to increase police presence in the subway system train as they work 12-hour shifts. Adams said the change could be a significant deterrent to would-be criminals. The state is supporting the surge with 1,000 additional officers composed of 750 national guardsmen and 250 state police, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/03\/06\/us-news\/gov-hochul-to-deploy-1000-national-guardsman-state-cops-to-carry-out-bag-checks-in-nyc-subways\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New York Post<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese brazen heinous attacks on our subway system will not be tolerated,\u201d Hochul said on Wednesday. The crackdown on crime in New York City comes after a spate of violence in the city\u2019s subway, including three New Yorkers fatally shot on the subway this year.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Part of the plan to curb criminals plaguing the city is to reimplement stop-and-search of riders\u2019 bags at train stations, a move reminiscent of the stop-and-frisk policy that ended under Adams\u2019 predecessor, former Democratic Mayor Bill de Blasio. Stop-and-frisk ended after de Blasio, who ran for mayor on reforming the practice, sought a resolution to a years-long court battle over the policy, deemed unconstitutional by a federal judge.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Adams has <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ny1.com\/nyc\/all-boroughs\/news\/2021\/05\/25\/eric-adams-explains-why-he-supports-stop-and-frisk--when-it-s-used-legally\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">expressed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> support in the past for aspects of stop-and-frisk.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">On Tuesday, Adams said police would search bags at train platforms to check for weapons and potential weapons, such as knives, box cutters, and firearms.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWe are reinstituting bag checks. There are several things we are reinstituting in the system,\u201d Adams said, according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/newyork\/news\/new-york-city-reinstituting-bag-checks-to-combat-rising-subway-crime\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">CBS News<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The city is also looking at getting machine detectors, similar to those used at airports, to scan riders.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWe\u2019re definitely on the pathway of coming up with some new technology that\u2019s going to help us identify weapons, as well as guns.
