After everything the media have done to render\u2062 Donald Trump an untouchable,\u200c toxic sludge \u2014 \u200bno less, a racist sludge that\u200b threatens democracy \u2014 Democrats can fix on no other \u2064reason so many people could openly declare their support for him outside of inexplicable memory loss.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h3>From the Times:<\/h3>\n<p>\u201cMore than three years of \u200cdistance from the daily\u200c onslaught has \u200cfaded, changed \u2014 and in some cases, warped \u2014 Americans\u2019 memories of \u2064events\u200c that\u200c at the time felt \u200dsearing. Polling suggests voters\u2019 views on Mr. Trump\u2019s policies and his presidency have improved in the rearview mirror. In interviews, voters often have\u200d a hazy recall of one \u200dof the most tumultuous periods in modern\u2062 politics. \u200bSocial\u200b scientists say that\u2019s unsurprising. The past has gone <em>hazy<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>People surely forget details,\u2064 misremember facts, and\u200d even sometimes unintentionally fabricate things that didn\u2019t happen (false memory). But the Times suggests there\u2019s something much different \u200dat play here,\u200c that Trump\u2019s reign as president was \u2063so \u2062eventful, frenetic, and even\u2063 traumatic that no person of\u200c sound mind and reliable memory could possibly consider putting him back in office. And if such a voter does\u200b exist, there certainly aren\u2019t \u2064 <em>tens of thousands<\/em>. Right?<\/p>\n<p>In essence, because a substantial number of voters have experienced a memory clean sweep of the pre-Biden\u2064 years, they\u2019re\u2064 unable \u200cto truly compare the current president to the \u200bprevious \u200bone. If they could, the Times suggests, poll\u2063 numbers wouldn\u2019t \u2064be nearly\u200b this close.<\/p>\n<p>The Times\u2019s\u2063 deputy opinion editor,\u200d Patrick Healy, made \u200ca similar \u200bargument <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/live\/2024\/02\/20\/opinion\/thepoint#trump-independent-voters-define\">last \u2062month<\/a> when he wrote on the results of a focus group of 13 swing voters. Eleven said they voted for Biden in 2020 but\u2062 would be voting for Trump in this year. \u200d\u201cA lot of our\u2062 focus group participants \u2014 and many voters \u2064\u2014 \u200dsee Trump \u200bas an acceptable option in November, \u201d \u2063wrote Healy, \u201cyet they don\u2019t \u200dknow\u2062 or remember a lot about him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His colleague Charles Blow\u200d wrote <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/02\/14\/opinion\/trump-years-rewritten.html\">a few days before<\/a> that positive polling for Trump indicated voters are \u201cdisregarding or downgrading\u201d the \u201ctrauma\u201d they lived through in the previous administration.<\/p>\n<p>What makes this \u200ccoping mechanism so remarkable is corporate media are inadvertently admitting all the blood, sweat, and tears they put into controlling \u200bvoters\u2019 perceptions \u2064of Trump isn\u2019t having the\u200d intended effect. If that\u2019s true, then man, oh man, has that been \u200da lot of wasted body fluid.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\">\n<p>CNN and\u2062 MSNBC\u2064 won\u2019t carry Trump\u2019s live\u200b appearances.\u200d The New York Times and Washington Post won\u2019t write a single\u200d article about him that isn\u2019t bogged down to the point of\u200b illegibility with \u201cfalse,\u201d \u201cno evidence,\u201d \u201cmisinformation,\u201d \u201cdisinformation,\u201d and on and on. Cable news commentary is limited to either calling the former president a racist, a rapist, or\u200d the ever-so-devastating\u2064 \u201cthreat \u2064to\u200d democracy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>You mean to\u2062 tell me\u2064 after all\u2063 of \u200dthat, at least half the country is nostalgic for a time \u200cwhen \u2064gas,\u2064 groceries, \u2064and \u2062rent\u2064 didn\u2019t inspire crippling anxiety? A sizable portion of the electorate still maintains second thoughts\u2063 about\u200c further handcuffing us to Ukraine in \u2063the\u200b middle of a hot \u200dwar?
