With 95 percent of the\u200b votes in, Haley was losing by nearly 30 points, with some 239,000 votes.<\/p>\n<p>Haley\u2019s defeat comes despite the state having an open primary, \u200dwhich she\u2062 reportedly hoped would boost her. \u200cAn <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.is\/oREi8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">exit poll<\/a> from \u2062 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2024\/03\/05\/how-different-groups-voted-super-tuesday-primary-according-exit-polls\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The\u200b Washington Post<\/a> showed that of the self-identified Democrats\u2064 who voted in \u2063the Virginia primary, 11 \u2064percent voted for \u2063Trump, while 84 \u200cpercent voted for \u200bHaley. Democratic donors \u2062such \u200cas \u200bLinkedIn\u200c co-founder Reid Hoffman reportedly\u200d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/12\/05\/us\/politics\/nikki-haley-reid-hoffman-donation.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">donated<\/a> \u200c$250,000 to a pro-Haley super\u200d PAC despite <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/reidhoffman\/status\/1732265533087814004\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">saying<\/a> \u2063he would vote for President Joe Biden in November.<\/p>\n<p>Haley has also touted herself as the bona \u2062fide candidate for\u2062 servicemen \u2063and women,\u2064 but despite \u2062more than 150,000 total active-duty and\u200c reserve members \u200breportedly\u200c <a href=\"https:\/\/www.governing.com\/now\/2021-military-active-duty-personnel-civilians-by-state\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">living<\/a> in Virginia as \u200dof 2021 and\u200b <a href=\"https:\/\/usafacts.org\/topics\/veterans\/state\/virginia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">nearly<\/a> 615,000 veterans reportedly residing in the state as of 2022, Haley still \u200bcouldn\u2019t convince key demographics that she wasn\u2019t the candidate of\u200b the \u200c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/joe-hoft-from-tgp-presents-at-transform-washington-on-january-6-web-conference-video\/\" title=\"Joe Hoft from TGP Presents at \u201cTransform Washington on January 6\u201d Web conference (VIDEO)\">military-industrial complex<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Haley performed \u200dunsurprisingly well in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2024\/03\/05\/us\/elections\/results-virginia-republican-presidential-primary.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Arlington County<\/a> \u2014 which isn\u2019t \u200creally\u2062 a win considering it\u2019s \u2064inhabited largely by D.C. \u2063swamp creatures.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Trump\u2019s win was a huge improvement from \u200dhis 2016 primary performance in\u2062 the state, where he narrowly beat Florida Sen. Marco Rubio by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/elections\/2016\/results\/primaries\/virginia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">less than 3 percentage points<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But Haley fails\u2063 to do what every\u200c single presidential hopeful must: appeal to\u200d rural voters.<\/p>\n<p>Virginia\u2019s map is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2024\/03\/05\/us\/elections\/results-virginia-republican-presidential-primary.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">overwhelmingly red<\/a>, especially \u2064outside the confines of \u200cD.C. Despite an influx of cash and support from Democrats, Haley faced a significant defeat, with Trump securing all 24\u200c delegates up for grabs in the state.<\/p>\n<p>At the time of reporting, Trump had\u2064 received approximately\u2064 434,000 votes, while Haley trailed far behind with only 239,000 \u2064votes, losing by nearly 30 points with 95 percent \u2064of the votes counted. Among self-identified \u2062independents who participated in the GOP primary, 48 percent voted for Trump, and 49 percent supported Haley, according to the same\u200d poll.<\/p>\n<p>Haley&#8217;s campaign\u200b strategists had emphasized the importance of open or semi-open primaries\u2062 in the lead-up to\u2062 Super Tuesday.\u200b They\u2063 believed that such primaries in states like Virginia, Texas, Maine, Massachusetts, North Carolina,\u2062 and Vermont would\u2064 allow\u200c Haley to expand her voter base beyond \u2064the Republican\u2063 Party.
