So far, however, \u200cevery bit of reporting I\u2019ve perused \u2014 from\u2062 ESPN to the alphabet media\u200c news outlets along with various social media tributes \u2014 all celebrate Caitlin Clark beating Pete Maravich\u2019s record. That\u2019s it. No qualifier.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As the proud\u200c father of a\u2063 former women\u2019s Division 1 \u2062NCAA athlete, you will not find a \u200cmore supportive fan of women\u2019s \u2064athletics. Indeed, my \u2062issue with the trans movement injecting itself into NCAA \u200csports is that it \u200dmakes a mockery\u200c of the entire concept of women\u2019s athletics \u2062and neuters Title IX advancements in the NCAA.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ms. Clark\u2019s achievement is truly remarkable. And, yes, technically she did surpass \u201cPistol Pete\u201d as the all-time NCAA \u200cbasketball scorer. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">But let us return, once again,\u200b to\u2063 cold, hard reality.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>The Context \u2062Matters: Maravich&#8217;s Era and Opponents<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">First\u2063 off, during Maravich\u2019s \u200cera, there was no three-point \u200cline, no shot clock, and no dunking. \u200cIt was a different game. Second, Maravich played only three seasons for LSU, since \u200bfreshmen were ineligible to play on varsity teams in the late 60s. But of course, that\u2019s not\u2063 the elephant\u200c in the room. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">There remains one other unavoidable and seminal fact: Ms. Clark is \u200ca woman playing against other women. Maravich played against men and \u200dnot just any men. During his 1967-1970 career at LSU his collegiate contemporaries included\u2062 the likes of Kareem Adbul-Jabar\u200b (Lew Alcindor) (7\u20192\u201d) and Elvin Hayes\u200c (6\u20199\u201d) and \u2062many others known\u200c for their tremendous ability on the court. That alone should be enough to end the argument. As impressive as Ms. Clark\u2019s stats may be, they should be \u2063calculated \u200don the women\u2019s \u200cside of the\u2062 basketball ledger.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">For the legacy media, however, political correctness \u2062drives the headlines, like this \u200done from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbssports.com\/general\/video\/caitlin-clark-becomes-the-ncaa-all-time-leading-scorer\/\">CBS Sports<\/a>: \u201cCaitlin Clark Becomes \u200dNCAA All-Time Leading Scorer.\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.upi.com\/Sports_News\/2024\/03\/03\/Alone-at-the-top-Caitlin-Clark-sets-NCAA-all-time-points-record\/5151709500304\/\">UPI\u2019s<\/a> \u2064 headline reads: <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cAlone at the Top: Caitlin Clark sets NCAA all time points \u200brecord.\u201d \u200b <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sports.yahoo.com\/caitlin-clark-breaks-pete-maravichs-ncaa-all-time-scoring-record-185800264.html#:~:text=Clark%20officially%20stands%20alone%20atop,18%20points%20to%20pass%20Maravich.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Yahoo! News<\/a> says she broke the women\u2019s and men\u2019s all-time leading scoring record. \u200d\u201cCaitlin Clark\u2062 breaks Pete Maravich\u2019s NCAA all-time scoring record\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Yahoo! News \u2064does\u2062 remind us that there are women\u2019s\u200d and men\u2019s sports before pivoting \u200dback to \u201call-time NCAA leader,\u201d which is\u2064 pretty typical of the dissonance so many\u2064 journalists \u2063must force themselves to overcome when reporting\u200b such landmarks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Yet, this is not a new phenomenon. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Many years ago, during an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/transcripts\/534149646#:~:text=GARCIA%2DNAVARRO%3A%20Yeah%2C%20best,MCENROE%3A%20Yeah.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">interview on NPR<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, John McEnroe stated \u200cSerena Williams was the greatest female \u200dtennis player in history. When the female interviewer suggested dropping gender from the \u2062equation, McEnroe\u200c refused:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">GARCIA-NAVARRO: Yeah, best tennis player in the world \u2062\u2013 you\u2063 know, why say female player?<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">MCENROE: \u200dWell, \u200bbecause if she was \u200c\u2013 if she played the men\u2019s\u2063 circuit,\u2063 she\u2019d\u200c be, like, 700 in \u2062the world.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">When CBS News anchor Nora O\u2019Donnell \u2063subsequently asked McEnroe if he wanted to apologize for his remarks, he rightfully \u2063refused again. Facts are facts. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Williams\u200c herself \u2063has \u2062backed McEnroe\u2019s assessment, telling <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=2hzHBsvj6C0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">David Letterman<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If I were to play Andy Murray, I would lose, 6-0, \u200c6-0, in five to six minutes, maybe 10 minutes \u2026 The men are a lot faster, they serve\u2063 harder, they\u2063 hit harder. \u2026 It\u2019s \u200da completely different game.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ms. Williams, who has\u200b more <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/report-djokovic-open-to-getting-vaccinated-after-exclusion-from-australian-open\/\" title=\"Report: Djokovic Open to 'Getting Vaccinated After Exclusion from Australian Open\">grand slam wins<\/a> (23) than \u2064either Roger Federer (20) or Rafael Nadal (22) \u2014 but one less \u200bthan Novak Djokovic (24) \u2014\u00a0 clearly does not consider herself in\u200d the same league. She understands men\u2019s \u2063tennis\u2063 and women\u2019s tennis are far from the same sport. As such, Serena Williams, along with Steffi \u200dGraf, Martina Navratilova, and Margaret Court, deserve their own places as the greatest women tennis players in \u2062history.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ms. \u200cClark\u2019s accomplishments are truly\u2062 remarkable, but truth\u2064 and accuracy in journalism still matter. Weren\u2019t we recently told by collegiate presidents themselves that context matters? I should think it \u2062applies to men\u2019s\u2064 versus women\u2019s\u2064 athletics most of all when \u2063making superlative claims based on numbers with no qualifiers added.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">So look up to Caitlin Clark\u200c for her stunning play, yes.\u2062 And congratulate her, \u200bas I do. If her drive and hard work are reflections\u200b of her character as a whole,\u2062 as I suspect they are, she is \u200ca\u2063 role model \u2064America\u2019s kids, girls especially, should emulate. But let\u2019s not try to make her into more than she is. Why? Because truth matters. This is a\u200c concept the media seem to\u200b have left behind in their \u2063relentless mission to create rather than report the narrative to achieve their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/three-star-general-teaching-critical-race-theory-leads-to-military-failure\/\" title=\"Three-Star General: Teaching Critical Race Theory Leads To Military Failure\">social engineering goals<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We know that\u2063 Ms. Clark could\u200c not \u2064compete head-to-head with the man whose record \u2063she has beaten. We know this because there is not a woman who could genuinely compete, let alone be a force, in the NBA against the best players of the world on the same court. \u2063Otherwise, the NBA would be filled with women too. Instead, they have their own league.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">So, unless Ms. Clark\u2019s record was achieved against male players, her stats should not therefore be held up\u200d to those of Maravich. Such a qualifier\u2063 would not relegate women\u2019s athletics to second-tier\u2063 status.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As the success of women\u2019s tennis has shown, \u200cpeople\u200c will still appreciate\u200b and marvel\u200c at awesome playing \u200bin all forms from both sexes.
