Mitch McConnell \u2064(R-KY) as leader of the Senate GOP.<\/h2>\n<p>Sen. John Barrasso (R-WY) revealed on Tuesday \u2063that he would not join Sens. John Cornyn (R-TX) and John Thune (R-SD) in the race for the top position, and instead will vie for Republican whip, the No. 2\u2064 spot.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cI have had \u2064time to reflect on how I might \u200dbest serve the Republican Conference and our country,\u201d Barrasso said in a statement. \u201cAfter a lot of thought,\u200d I will ask my\u200c colleagues for their support and help to work for them as the Assistant Republican Leader.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Barrasso, an orthopedic surgeon-turned-lawmaker, has served in the upper\u2062 chamber since 2007. He\u200b is \u2062currently the No. 3 Republican in the Senate, serving as chairman of the Senate Republican Conference.<\/p>\n<p>If he were to take\u200c on the role of Republican\u200b whip, which is currently held by Thune, Barrasso would be tasked with performing head counts and rallying members of the party for votes and quorum calls.<\/p>\n<p>Barrasso\u200d has endorsed former President Donald Trump in the 2024 White House race.\u200c He voted in line with \u2062Trump\u2019s position 89.1% of the\u200d time when Trump was in office, according to FiveThirtyEight.<\/p>\n<p>Leadership elections\u200d are expected to take place in November.\u2062 Winners\u2062 will take over their \u200bnew roles in January.<\/p>\n<p>McConnell, who is 82, announced his\u2064 plans to step aside as GOP leader last week. \u201cIt\u2019s time for the next generation of leadership,\u201d he said.
