Thus, success in \u2063movies and television has always been \u200cthe result\u200c of great storytellers writing great stories \u2014 regardless of whether the writers were male or\u2063 female, white or black or \u2064any other minority. \u200cBut according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thefp.com\/p\/hollywoods-new-rules\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The \u2063Free Press<\/a>, those times appear to be changing.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Joseph\u2062 Del Valle\/NBCU Photo Bank\/NBCUniversal via\u2063 Getty Images<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h3><strong>Streaming Platforms<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Streaming companies like Amazon, Netflix, and Disney+ have been shelling out millions of\u2063 dollars to create shows that will please the DEI gods, but those are losing\u2064 out to old shows, also known as acquired shows, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.frontpagemag.com\/why-old-tv-shows-are-beating-hollywoods-billion-dollar-dei-machine\/?fbclid=IwAR3ZJCvGZkDZm429rlKqlZmuv-JTr8HkPjOdmVfrqzd1dNVjNsVYuIZsKYY\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Front Page magazine<\/a> noted.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nielsen.com\/insights\/2024\/streaming-unwrapped-streaming-viewership-goes-to-the-library-in-2023\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nielsen\u2019s<\/a> \u200bStreaming Viewership from 2023, which tracks what people listen to and watch, more than 57\u2064 billion minutes\u200d were spent last year watching \u201cSuits,\u201d a legal \u2062drama that premiered in 2011. That was more than any other show last year.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Ian Watson\/USA Network\/NBCU Photo\u2064 Bank\/NBCUniversal\u2062 via Getty Images<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>In fact, \u200dof the top 10 streamed shows of 2023, more than a handful are all shows that\u200c were made more \u2064than a decade ago.<\/p>\n<p>Shows like \u201cGilmore Girls,\u201d\u200c and \u201cFriends,\u201d which have been off \u200bthe \u2063air for years, \u200dwere watched in\u200d 2023 billions of minutes more than the new ones like \u201cTed Lasso\u201d or \u201cGinny and Georgia.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Danny Feld\/NBCU Photo Bank<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Netflix spent $168\u200c million on\u200c shows like \u201cBridgerton\u201d for the first three\u200d seasons and lost to \u2064shows like \u201cSuits\u201d which it paid a reported estimate of $200,000 per episode, <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2023\/09\/streaming-residuals-explained-suits-netflix-1235552804\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Deadline<\/a> noted.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, Disney spent $25 million an \u200bepisode for its woke \u201cStar Wars\u201d series \u201cAhsoka\u201d in 2023 but ended up losing in the ratings war to shows like \u201cSuits\u201d with a budget of $3 million, Front Page magazine noted.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>TV Shows By The Minutes<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>In an article titled, \u201cHow Comfort Shows Conquered\u2063 Streaming TV,\u201d the \u200d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/business\/digital\/top-streaming-shows-most-watched-1235816555\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hollywood Reporter<\/a> noted that the top 10 overall titles in Nielsen\u2019s year-end rankings for 2023 \u2062are all acquired shows.\u201d It\u2019s also reported that it\u2019s \u201cthe first time that\u2019s happened in the\u200d four years streaming\u2064 rankings have been publicly \u200davailable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Acquired shows had a massive showing in\u2063 2023, with the top 10 accounting for 339.5 billion minutes \u2063of viewing, that\u2019s up almost 41% from 2022 when 241.4 billion minutes were viewed, THR noted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe definitely had a lesser number of originals [in 2023],\u201d Brian Fuhrer, Nielsen\u2019s senior\u200c vp product strategy and thought leadership, told the outlet. \u201cAs a\u200c result, the introduction of huge new blockbuster originals that we\u2019re used to, that really wasn\u2019t the\u200d case this\u200d year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Speaking of \u2062originals, looks like the \u2018show about nothing\u2019 still has what it takes. Those included \u2064the \u200dcharacters we saw on the small screen and those working behind the scenes,\u2063 the outlet \u2062noted.<\/p>\n<p>In response, there\u2019s been a huge drive for \u201cinclusivity\u201d in Hollywood, regardless \u2063of whether those hired are the best to get \u200bthe job done, something that seems \u2062to be happening in every aspect of our society.<\/p>\n<p>And the problem isn\u2019t just \u2062woke issues\u200d woven into a story for the sake of DEI. Hollywood has always been eager to tackle those kinds of things. Take the example of\u2063 the 1967 classic movie \u201cGuess Who\u2019s Coming \u200dto \u2062Dinner\u201d with Sidney\u2062 Poitier and Katherine Hepburn,\u2062 which tackled \u2064interracial marriage or on the small screen with shows like \u201cAll in the Family\u201d (1971-1979) which dealt with race issues head-on.<\/p>\n<p>The DEI \u200cpush, on the other hand, seeks to influence every aspect of show business, but audiences are making it clear, they are only interested in great \u200dstories, regardless of how old.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Writers\u2019 Room<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>In an\u2064 effort to be\u200b seen as \u201cinclusive,\u201d legendary networks made massive \u2064changes to who \u2063was \u2063telling the stories and writing the shows. At CBS, the company <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment-arts\/tv\/story\/2020-07-13\/cbs-racial-diversity-effort-writers-development-bipoc#:~:text=CBS%20wants%20at%20least%2040,producers%2C%20the%20network%20announced%20Monday\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">mandated<\/a> \u2062 that writers\u2019 rooms have at least 40% minority representation for the 2021-2022\u2064 broadcast season with \u200d25% of its script development budget to fund projects from creators, writers and producers who meet their diversity qualifications, the Free Press noted.<\/p>\n<p>ABC \u200dEntertainment issued a detailed series of \u201cinclusion standards,\u201d the \u2064outlet noted. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/tv\/tv-news\/abc-unveils-ambitious-set-of-inclusion-standards-exclusive-4069409\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ABC<\/a> also committed to making sure 50% \u2063of\u200c its showrunners, writers, producers, crew, performers check a \u200cBIPOC representation box by the 2022-23 season, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/tv\/tv-news\/abc-unveils-ambitious-set-of-inclusion-standards-exclusive-4069409\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">THR<\/a> noted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m \u200ball \u200bfor LGBT and Native Americans, blacks, females, whatever minorities that have not been served correctly in the making of content, whether it\u2019s television or movies or whatever, but I think it\u2019s gone too far,\u201d Howard Koch, who has been involved in the production \u2062of more than 60 movies and \u2063is the former president of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts &#038;\u200b Sciences, said, the Free Press noted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know a lot of very talented people that can\u2019t get work because they\u2019re not black, Native American, female or LGBTQ,\u201d he \u200badded.<\/p>\n<p>The Writers Guild of America West <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wga.org\/uploadedfiles\/the-guild\/inclusion-and-equity\/Inclusion-Report-2022.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Inclusion and Equity Report<\/a> of 2022, found that in 2011\u200d 64% of staff\u2062 writers had been men, but by 2020, only\u2062 a third were.
