For Senate Republicans,\u2064 that\u2063 means finding a replacement who\u2062 will \u2062adhere to the wishes of\u2063 their voters \u200band place American interests first.<\/p>\n<p>Part of what makes McConnell so deeply unpopular \u200camong GOP voters is his willingness \u2063to place \u2062foreign interests above American ones. Look \u2063no further\u200b than the Senate\u2019s recent <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/02\/06\/nothing-about-the-rigged-senate-border-bill-is-in-the-national-interest\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">border\u2064 boondoggle<\/a>, in which \u200cMcConnell and Sen. \u2064James Lankford,\u200c R-Okla., <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/02\/02\/schumer-and-mcconnell-want-senators-to-pass-their-106b-border-bill-without-reading-it-hell-no\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">schemed<\/a> \u2063 behind closed \u200bdoors with Democrats to produce a bill that gifted <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2024\/02\/04\/1226427234\/senate-border-deal-reached\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">$60 billion<\/a> to Ukraine\u200b and effectively <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/02\/06\/nothing-about-the-rigged-senate-border-bill-is-in-the-national-interest\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">enshrined<\/a> President Biden\u2019s\u2064 border invasion into law.<\/p>\n<p>While \u2063backlash from \u200dRepublican voters and the caucus\u2019 more conservative senators ultimately\u2062 killed the proposal, the finished product proved McConnell never had any \u200dinterest \u200cin securing America\u2019s\u2064 southern border. The only thing that \u2062matters to him \u200dand Senate GOP leadership is bankrolling\u200b Ukraine\u2019s forever war against Russia.<\/p>\n<p>This sentiment was further confirmed after the \u2063bill\u2019s\u2064 defeat, in\u2063 which McConnell and Senate\u2062 leadership <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/02\/13\/gop-leadership-is-obviously-corrupt-but-these-senators-are-standing-up-for-america\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">rammed<\/a> through a $95 billion foreign spending package that included (mostly) funding for Ukraine and <em>zero<\/em> provisions addressing\u2063 America\u2019s ongoing border \u2062invasion. Of \u200ccourse, the Kentucky Republican had help pushing the measure across the finish line. Despite <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/02\/13\/gop-leadership-is-obviously-corrupt-but-these-senators-are-standing-up-for-america\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">objections<\/a> from numerous GOP senators, the bill passed 70-29, with <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/ChadPergram\/status\/1757374147687030910?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">22 Republicans<\/a> voting \u201cyea.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Among those who \u2062supported its passage are GOP Sens. John Thune \u200cof South Dakota\u2064 and \u2064John Cornyn of\u200c Texas.
