Senate Republican Minority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky announced Wednesday he will step \u200ddown from his leadership role this fall, citing\u200c his age and \u200chealth. <\/p>\n

\u201cOne of life\u2019s most underappreciated talents is\u200c to know when it\u2019s time to \u200cmove on to life\u2019s next chapter,\u201d the 82-year-old Senate leader said<\/a>. \u201cSo I stand before you today\u2026 to say that this will be my last term as Republican leader of the\u2064 Senate.\u201d<\/p>\n

Federalist\u2063 CEO Sean Davis reported <\/a>that \u200cSenate insiders see McConnell\u2019s decision as both a concession and\u200b a power grab.<\/p>\n

\u201cEven a growing\u200d number of moderates were angry at\u200d the chaos he was sowing in the conference,\u201d one senior \u200cSenate GOP aide told Davis. \u201cAn \u200dopen rebellion against McConnell\u2064 was in the works due\u200d to \u200chis \u2018repeated sabotage of Republican priorities and border \u200binaction.’\u201d<\/p>\n

McConnell, another aide said, is just trying to get ahead of \u201ca possible defenestration.\u201d<\/p>\n
