Less\u200c than one week\u2063 after the Alabama\u2063 Supreme Court\u200b ruled that embryos are children \u200cunder the state\u2019s\u2063 Wrongful Death of a Minor Act, several fertility \u2063facilities brought their in vitro fertilization \u2063operations to a screeching halt. Republican and Democrat \u200dlegislators also jumped to protect the largely unregulated assisted reproductive technology<\/a> industry.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0University of Alabama at Birmingham \u200d(UAB) announced<\/a> Wednesday that it would suspend IVF until \u200cfurther notice to \u201cevaluate the potential that our patients and our physicians could \u2064be prosecuted criminally or face punitive damages for following the standard of care for IVF treatments.\u201d<\/p>\n

UAB\u2019s pause was quickly mimicked by Alabama\u200c Fertility Specialists\u200d (AFS), which decided<\/a> \u200dto \u200d\u201chold new IVF\u2064 treatments due to the legal risk\u200b to our clinic and our embryologists,\u201d \u2062and The Center for \u2062Reproductive Medicine at\u200d Mobile Infirmary, the fertility facility at \u2062the \u200ccenter of the landmark case. <\/p>\n

All blamed the state\u2064 supreme court even though the justices\u2062 did not attempt to nitpick or govern the operations\u200d of fertility facilities in its ruling<\/a>. They were joined by corporate media and Democrats, \u200cwhich gladly amplified complaints about considering embryos humans. <\/p>\n

Instead of exploring ways to regulate the unethical\u2062 and immoral practices Big Fertility \u2062employs, lawmakers on both<\/a> sides<\/a> of the political aisle began working \u2062to immortalize the serial creation and destruction of human lives in \u200btheir tiniest form in\u200c state<\/a> and federal law. The National Republican Senatorial Committee even went so far as to claim<\/a> this week that the very pro-life decision to consider embryos human life is\u200b merely \u201cfodder for\u2064 Democrats hoping to \u200bmanipulate \u2063the abortion issue for\u2062 electoral gain.\u201d <\/p>\n

Don\u2019t Be Fooled<\/h2>\n
CBS Mornings aired \u2064the \u201canger\u201d<\/a> of Jasmine York, \u200ba 34-year-old \u200dmother whose \u2062March embryo transfer\u200b could be postponed due to UofA\u2019s IVF pause. York agreed with the host that IVF is her \u201clast hope to have \u200ca baby\u201d due to her damaged fallopian tubes, but ended the segment by declaring the embryos she created with \u2064her husband are \u201cnot living\u2064 children.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIf they were, things would be \u2062a lot different in\u200b my \u2062world\u2063 and all of\u200b these other women\u2019s worlds,\u201d York concluded. \u201cWe want living children. That\u2019s our goal.\u201d<\/p>\n
