James Lankford \u200btake\u200b the fall for an <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/01\/30\/biden-has-the-power-to-end-the-border-crisis-without-congress-he-just-doesnt-want-to\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">unnecessary<\/a> bill that would \u200dkeep America\u2019s borders open to a\u2062 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/eight-of-the-biggest-failures-of-mayorkas-leadership-of-dhs\/\" title=\"Eight of the Biggest Failures of Mayorkas' Leadership of DHS\">record-breaking influx<\/a> of illegals. The \u201cdead on arrival\u201d legislation was actually the <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/02\/06\/joe-bidens-border-bill-is-mitch-mcconnells-blunder\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">brainchild of McConnell<\/a>, who \u2064used secret negotiations with Senate Majority Leader\u2062 Chuck Schumer to secure taxpayer\u2062 money for the Ukraine\u200c border while leaving our own vulnerable.<\/p>\n<p>Republicans like Sens. Mike Lee and Ted Cruz, who initiated \u200bthe letter, are well aware \u200dof McConnell\u2019s \u2064track record,\u2063 which is why they are publicly discouraging him from allying with Democrats, who called House Republicans\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/01\/31\/house-republicans-advance-mayorkas-impeachment-through-homeland-security-committee\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">dragged out charges<\/a> against Mayorkas a <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/senate\/4467256-schumer-mayorkas-impeachment-new-low-house-gop\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201csham\u201d\u2064 and an \u201cembarrassment.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Senate has a \u201cconstitutional duty\u201d to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.senate.gov\/about\/powers-procedures\/impeachment.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201ctry all impeachments,\u201d<\/a> but Schumer allegedly plans to \u201cdispense with \u2062the articles\u200b of impeachment\u200d by simply \u2063tabling both individually.\u201d Lee \u200band Cruz, who\u200b criticized Schumer\u2019s plan to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2024\/02\/20\/mayorkas-impeachment-senate-gop-mcconnell-cruz-lee\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Senate parliamentarian last week<\/a>, say that move is unprecedented\u2062 and possibly a violation of upper chamber rules.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis \u200dis an action rarely contemplated and never taken\u2062 by the U.S. \u200cSenate in the history of our Republic,\u201d\u200b the Republicans wrote. \u201cIt remains to be seen if the Senate rules \u200bwill even allow \u2062us to brush aside our duty in this\u2062 manner, but one thing is sure, \u2062if\u200d a similar strategy was contemplated by Senate Republicans\u2062 when \u200bwe were in the majority with a Republican occupying\u200d the White House, the opposition would be fierce and the volume\u2064 from Democrats would be deafening.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>McConnell <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/02\/14\/politics\/mitch-mcconnell-foreign-aid\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">claimed to CNN<\/a> last \u2062week that \u2063he had yet to make up his mind on holding a trial and even\u2062 dismissing Mayorkas\u2019 charges.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI haven\u2019t really thought about it,\u201d he\u2064 replied but hinted\u200d that\u200c he \u2064did not favor an impeachment trial. \u201cI don\u2019t think\u2063 we\u2019ll\u2064 have two endless trials like we\u2019ve had recently.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The GOPers\u2019 letter, however, demands McConnell pursue action against Mayorkas for his \u200d\u201cwillful and systemic refusal to comply\u2062 with the law, as well as the breach\u200d of public trust\u201d instead of \u200bletting it fizzle out.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe call on you to join us in our efforts to \u2063jettison this approach by Democrats to shirk their\u2064 Constitutional duty, ensure that the Senate conducts \u2063a proper trial, and that \u2062every Senator, Republican and Democrat, \u200dadjudicates this matter when the Senate returns,\u201d \u200bthe \u200dRepublicans \u2063concluded.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<hr>\n<h3>About the Author<\/h3>\n<p>Jordan Boyd is \u200ba staff writer at\u2062 The Federalist and \u2062co-producer of The Federalist Radio Hour.
