According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kqed.org\/news\/11976026\/san-francisco-appoints-first-non-citizen-to-serve-on-elections-commission\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">KQED<\/a>, a local outlet, the commission is a \u201cseven-member civilian body that \u2063oversees and creates policy for the city\u2019s Department of Elections.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are always voices inside my head. Like, \u2018You can\u2019t \u200ddo it. You\u2019re not competent. You\u2019re an immigrant. This is not your country.\u2019 That\u2019s not true,\u201d Wong, a so-called \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/joe-biden-flying-illegal-aliens-deported-by-trump-back-to-u-s\/\" title=\"Joe Biden Flying Illegal Aliens, Deported by Trump, Back to U.S.\">immigrant rights advocate<\/a>,\u201d said. \u201cIf I can do it, [other foreign nationals] can\u2064 do it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While ineligible to \u2063vote in elections, Wong <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kqed.org\/news\/11976026\/san-francisco-appoints-first-non-citizen-to-serve-on-elections-commission\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">told<\/a> KQED \u2062that she aims to use her new \u2063position, as the outlet described, to \u201cincrease engagement among \u2062the city\u2019s immigrant and non-English speaking communities\u201d and \u201censure that\u2062 voter materials \u200dare\u200c translated \u200bin\u2062 a way that people can understand.\u201d To illustrate the latter, Wong\u2062 noted how there\u2019s currently no Cantonese or Mandarin equivalent to\u200b English terms such as \u201creparations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to Just the News, in 2020 San Francisco <a href=\"https:\/\/justthenews.com\/politics-policy\/elections\/hong-kong-immigrant-becomes-first-non-us-citizen-serve-san-francisco?callback=in&#038;code=NJM4MZDIYJUTNZZHZC0ZNZAWLWIWNDUTMTQXY2NHOTIYM2Y2&#038;state=55e08218d11343f5854a4c08c7ab9deb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">axed<\/a> a citizenship requirement for serving on city boards and commissions.<\/p>\n<p>Wong\u2019s appointment to \u2062San Francisco\u2019s Elections\u2064 Commission \u2062isn\u2019t all that surprising given the city\u2019s willingness to grant privileges exclusively intended for\u200c U.S. citizens to illegal immigrants. In 2016, for instance, city voters \u200cpassed Proposition N, which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfexaminer.com\/archives\/san-francisco-supervisors-approve-non-citizen-voting-in-school-board-elections\/article_aaea212f-092e-5d89-8880-dd13dd4b601a.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">authorized<\/a> foreign nationals who are parents or guardians of children in San Francisco\u2019s school system to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.msn.com\/en-us\/news\/us\/non-citizens-may-vote-in-san-francisco-school-board-elections-court-rules\/ar-AA1f1Psp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">vote<\/a> in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/new-pac-aims-to-fight-back-against-critical-race-theory-1619-project-by-targeting-local-school-board-elections\/\" title=\"New PAC Aims To Fight Back Against Critical Race Theory, 1619 Project By Targeting Local School Board Elections\">local school board elections<\/a>. While the measure was only\u2063 temporary and set to expire in 2022, the San Francisco\u2062 Board of Supervisors voted in October 2021 to make the change permanent.<\/p>\n<p>This prompted the U.S. Justice Foundation and California Public Policy Foundation to file a lawsuit against the\u200d city, arguing the measure constituted a violation of California\u2019s constitution. The Superior\u200c Court\u200b of San Francisco agreed, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfexaminer.com\/news\/politics\/state-court-backs-sf-law-allowing-noncitizens-right-to-vote\/article_90c188c0-363e-11ee-a9bf-6734c3c79516.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ruling<\/a> in July 2022 that the measure runs \u201ccontrary to the California\u2063 constitution and state statutes and thus cannot stand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The California Court of Appeal <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2023\/08\/10\/california-court-greenlights-foreign-interference-in-san-franciscos-school-board-elections\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">overturned<\/a> that decision in\u200b August, allowing the policy to take effect.<\/p>\n<p>San Francisco is not the only jurisdiction where Democrats have granted foreign nationals voting\u200c privileges. \u200bWhile federal law stipulates that only U.S. citizens can vote in federal elections, <a href=\"https:\/\/ballotpedia.org\/Laws_permitting_noncitizens_to_vote_in_the_United_States\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Democrat-led cities<\/a> in states such as Maryland and California\u2062 have adopted measures \u200bin recent years permitting noncitizen voting in their municipal elections.<\/p>\n<p><strong>[RELATED:[RELATED:<a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/02\/05\/elon-musk-entire-goal-of-bogus-biden-border-bill-is-to-give-illegal-aliens-voting-rights\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Elon Musk: Entire Goal Of Bogus\u200b Biden Border Bill Is To Give \u2062Illegal Aliens Voting Rights<\/a>]<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Despite their state constitution forbidding such a practice, Rhode Island Democrats <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2023\/02\/13\/rhode-island-bill-would-open-elections-to-illegal-aliens-in-democrats-latest-push-for-noncitizen-voting\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">introduced<\/a> legislation during last year\u2019s\u200d legislative session aimed at \u200cgranting such privileges to their noncitizen\u2063 population. The <a href=\"https:\/\/legiscan.com\/RI\/bill\/H5461\/2023\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">bill<\/a> never made\u200d it out of committee.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Washington, \u200bD.C. passed legislation in 2022 granting foreign nationals the ability to \u200cvote in the district\u2019s local\u200d elections. San Francisco has long been plagued by \u200cissues such as crime, homelessness, and struggling infrastructure, yet \u200dthe Board \u200dof Supervisors unanimously voted to prioritize the appointment of Wong over addressing the\u2064 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/hillary-clinton-clashes-with-heckler-accusing-her-of-hypocrisy-over-free-speech\/\" title=\"Hillary Clinton confronts heckler accusing her of 'hypocrisy' on free speech.\">pressing challenges\u200d faced<\/a> by its \u2064own citizens.<\/p>\n<p>Wong, who describes herself as an &#8220;immigrant rights advocate,&#8221; expressed determination to\u200c use her position to increase engagement among the city&#8217;s immigrant and non-English speaking communities.
