Last fall, he attended one of the pro-Palestine protests to investigate. \u200bHowever, he soon became\u200c the\u200b focus of the\u200d protest when he pulled out his phone \u2062to record.<\/p>\n<p>The video obtained \u2063by The Center\u2064 Square shows the nature, speeches, and chants from the protest, which were not dissimilar to others around\u2062 the country. The protesters\u2063 chanted slogans like &#8220;From the\u2063 river to\u2064 the sea Palestine will be free!&#8221; and &#8220;Decolonization looks like blood stained knives and \u200dsearing bullets.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>One sign even displayed a trash can with the Jewish \u200bstar of David, sending a clear\u2062 message of hatred towards Jews.<\/p>\n<p>Surrounded by fellow\u200b students who realized \u2062he was recording, Melman felt threatened \u200dand unsafe. He \u200bwas struck by signs and left with a lasting impact from the experience.<\/p>\n<h3>A Lack of \u200cSupport<\/h3>\n<p>Melman\u2062 expressed his concerns about \u2064feeling unsupported and unprotected by \u200dschool officials and local and state officials\u2062 in Illinois who have shown support for Palestine. \u2063He \u200dfears \u200dthat the situation could worsen, especially if the conflict overseas escalates.<\/p>\n<p>Pro-Palestinian protesters argue that they are standing up against the oppression of the \u2062people in Gaza. \u200dHowever, \u200bthese protests have often included calls and\u2062 justifications for violence, even endorsing the Hamas attack on Oct. \u200c7 that \u2064targeted \u2064women, children, and babies.<\/p>\n<h3>A Call for Action<\/h3>\n<p>Eann Tang, another student who attended the protest,\u200d filmed Melman&#8217;s altercation with the protesters. Tang filed a\u200d complaint with the Department of \u2064Education, which opened an inquiry.\u200b However, there \u200chas been little response so far.<\/p>\n<p>Melman also\u200b reached out to his university&#8217;s president, expressing his pain and asking for action to stop the harassment of Jewish students on campus. Many universities have a\u200bpparently \u200bturned a blind\u200c eye to these protests and the actions of the \u200bprotesters,\u2062 failing to address the\u200c concerns and fears of their \u2063Jewish students\u200b.<\/p>\n<p>In some cases, university administrators have even supported or endorsed the pro-Palestinian protests, further exacerbating the feelings\u200c of unsafety \u200dfor Jewish students\u200c. This lack of support and protection from their own institutions leaves Jewish students feeling like their voices are being silenced and their concerns are being ignored.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, federal officials have not done enough to condemn \u200dthe anti-Semitic rhetoric and actions that sometimes accompany \u2063these pro-Palestinian protests. This lack of condemnation only fuels the fire, emboldening those who wish to \u2062spread hatred and violence against Jews.<\/p>\n<h3>Addressing the Issue<\/h3>\n<p>It is crucial that universities and federal officials take immediate action \u2064to address the rise\u2064 of pro-Palestinian protests and the\u200d resulting \u2063feelings \u200cof unsafety\u200d among Jewish\u2063 students\u2063.
