All to protect their bottom line. But now the IRS is testing out a truly free Direct File option.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure>\n<blockquote data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Every time you see a TurboTax ad, remember:\u2064 they\u2019ve spent millions of dollars\u2063 lobbying to make the tax-filing\u2063 process \u2062as difficult\u2062 and time-consuming as \u2062possible. It\u2019s Congress, charged with writing tax\u2062 code, that has spent\u2064 decades\u2064 making filing both difficult and time-consuming. TurboTax \u200conly exists because \u2064Congress has created a byzantine code.<\/p>\n<p>Moreover, tax preparation outfits are lobbying \u200dto oppose the federal \u2064government using taxpayer dollars\u200b to put \u200bthem out\u200d of business. If TurboTax were lobbying against flattening or simplifying\u200d our byzantine code, I would be \u2064appalled myself. In this case, they\u2019re lobbying against the \u2062efforts \u200bof a deranged apparatchik to \u2064nationalize another industry.<\/p>\n<p>Warren\u2063 not \u2062only wants the \u2063government to write tax code, enforce tax code, \u200cand withdraw taxes from your paycheck, she wants to file your taxes, as well. \u200dIt is a guarantee \u200dthat any\u2064 government program created to \u200c\u201cprepare\u201d\u200c taxes would evolve \u2062into a government program that cuts \u200cthe\u200c citizen out\u200d of\u200c the process completely. Our withholding system is bad enough.\u200b We don\u2019t \u2063need \u200dsalaried workers \u200beven more disconnected from the price of government.<\/p>\n<h3>Choose Your Own Tax \u200cStrategy<\/h3>\n<p>Contra\u2064 Joe\u2062 Biden, paying higher taxes \u2062isn\u2019t a \u200c <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/corner\/joe-biden-has-a-weird-understanding-of-patriotism\/\">patriotic act<\/a>. An American has\u2064 the right to pay the bare minimum\u2064 permissible \u2062by law by aggressively tracking down every legal \u201cloophole\u201d and\u200d write-off in the code. Every penny\u200b you keep benefits your family and the economy, while\u200c every dollar \u200byou hand over\u2064 to Warren is wasted or worse.<\/p>\n<p>Private companies like TurboTax\u200c are incentivized \u200cto create\u2064 practical and easy ways to save consumers money to stay in business. I use it. It\u2019s excellent. I\u2019m happy they make a profit. The IRS, which would be prefilling forms by the tens of millions, \u200cis incentivized to \u200cplease politicians. It gains nothing from\u200d making \u200cyour\u200b life easier, \u2062which is obvious to \u200banyone who is compelled to \u200bdeal with a \u200dstate agency \u200don virtually any issue.<\/p>\n<p>None of this is\u200b to mention that the IRS is often <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2021\/05\/01\/politics\/letters-covid-relief-biden-signature\/index.html\">used<\/a> \u2063as a partisan vehicle and has proven <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2017\/10\/27\/560308997\/irs-apologizes-for-aggressive-scrutiny-of-conservative-groups\">repeatedly<\/a> that it can\u2019t be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/2021\/06\/we-cant-trust-the-irs\/\">trusted<\/a>. We should be stripping it of power,\u2062 not\u2062 expanding its duties.<\/p>\n<h3>The \u200dIRS&#8217;s Unauthorized Direct File Program<\/h3>\n<p>For example,\u200c an IRS Direct File program pilot\u2063 program \u2064was recently launched in 12 states,\u2063 even though\u200d no such program was ever authorized by Congress.\u200c The \u201cInflation Reduction Act\u201d set \u200baside $15 million to study a \u201cfree\u201d program.
