In this four-part \u2064series, the Washington Examiner will take a \u2063look at how focused the\u200b GOP will be on the Empire State in \u200d2024 and\u2064 if it can stop the Democratic \u2064Party \u200dfrom regaining the upper hand in its traditional stronghold. Part two of this series takes a look at the first race that could spark a series \u200dof victories or set off a cascade\u200b of losses for the GOP this year.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h3>Voters in the Empire State \u200bHead to\u200c the Polls<\/h3>\n<p>Voters in\u2063 the \u2063Empire State are heading to the polls to\u2064 select a successor to disgraced \u2062former \u200dGOP Rep. \u200cGeorge Santos in what could be the\u200d first of a string of Republican \u2063losses in New\u2063 York this year.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>With several\u2062 of the New \u2064York Republicans elected in 2022 already working to defend swing districts, a new\u200c congressional map for November looks poised to \u2063cause more havoc after Tuesday\u2019s special election \u2062between former Democratic Rep. Tom\u200d Suozzi and Republican \u2062Mazi Pilip.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h3>The Candidates and the \u200bRisk<\/h3>\n<p>Here is a look \u2064at the two \u2063people\u200b vying for Santos\u2019s former seat in New York\u2019s 3rd Congressional District and \u2064the New York \u200cRepublicans \u200dmost at risk of losing their seats in November.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Former Rep. George Santos\u2019s seat<\/p>\n<p>Suozzi represented \u2062the Empire State\u2019s \u20643rd\u2063 Congressional District from 2017 until 2023. Suozzi announced he was not going to run\u2063 for reelection \u200dand joined the crowded race for governor in\u200c 2022. He finished in\u200b a\u200d distant third place in the Democratic gubernatorial primary in 2022, with incumbent Gov.\u200b Kathy\u200b Hochul\u200c (D-NY) handily winning the \u200ccontest after\u2064 only one year on the \u200djob.<\/p>\n<p>He was selected\u2063 as the Democrats\u2019 nominee for the district in December, shortly after Santos was ousted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn my campaign, I\u2019m looking at Washington, D.C., and \u200dI\u2019m \u2062saying, \u2018Hey, something\u2019s not working in Washington, and I only left a year ago,\u2019\u201d \u2064Suozzi said at his campaign launch. \u201cEven though I saw the division when I\u2064 was there, it\u2019s \u200dgotten worse. It\u2019s\u2062 scary. \u2063And \u200cI see so\u2062 many people that are so fed \u200dup with the system.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>During his time in Congress, Suozzi voted 100% with\u2062 President Joe Biden during \u200dthe 117th Congress and\u2062 20.5% with then-President Donald\u200b Trump while he was in the\u200c White House, according to an analysis\u200b by FiveThirtyEight.<\/p>\n<p>Pilip \u2063has served in the Nassau \u2064County legislature \u200dsince 2022, being reelected \u200blast\u2064 year, and is viewed as a \u200brising\u200d star in the Long Island GOP. She \u2063was born\u2063 in Ethiopia \u2064before moving to Israel and\u2062 serving in the\u200b Israel Defense Forces,\u200c later \u200cemigrating to the U.S. She\u2063 has made support for Israel a \u2064chief part\u200b of her campaign.<\/p>\n<p>With the saga regarding \u200dborder security\u2064 measures in\u200c Congress, immigration\u2063 and the southern\u2063 border \u2063have \u2063become key topics in\u2063 this New York special\u200b election. Pilip attempted to tie Suozzi \u200bto\u2064 the border crisis during a \u2063debate last week, with \u2064attacks that he \u201cvoted to open the borders\u201d and\u200c charged that Suozzi \u201ccreated the migrant crisis.\u201d\u200b Suozzi denied\u2064 the characterization, arguing he voted \u2062to fund Immigration\u200b and Customs Enforcement when in Congress.<\/p>\n<p>The race has been rated as a \u201ctoss-up\u201d by the Cook Political Report, but \u200bthe lingering \u200bbad feelings about Santos \u200cand a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/senate-leadership-fund-announces-28-million-ad-buy-for-jd-vance-in-ohio\/\" title=\"Senate Leadership Fund Announces  Million Ad Buy for JD Vance in Ohio\">significant fundraising advantage<\/a> could\u2062 help Democrats flip \u200dthe \u200cseat.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h3>Other\u2064 Republicans\u2062 at Risk<\/h3>\n<p>While Republicans may \u2062still hold\u200c on\u2062 to the 3rd Congressional\u200b District on Tuesday, it will\u200d be the first of many Empire State challenges in 2024. \u2062The \u2064state will\u200c get a new \u2063congressional map for use in November, which is widely expected to be more favorable to Democrats, but before that can \u200cbe factored, several incumbents are \u2063already in vulnerable positions.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The Cook \u200dPolitical Report has rated Reps. Anthony D\u2019Esposito (R-NY), Mike\u200b Lawler (R-NY), \u2063Marc Molinaro\u200d (R-NY), and Brandon\u200b Williams (R-NY) as being in \u201ctoss-up\u201d districts after winning their \u2064seats in 2022. Three\u2064 of the\u200d four currently represent districts with a net Democratic partisan voting \u200cindex, according \u200cto the outlet, while Molinaro represents a district\u200b with an\u2064 \u201ceven\u201d index.<\/p>\n<p>Republicans were boosted with a favorable \u200bmap and a \u200cstronger-than-expected gubernatorial candidate \u200din former Rep. Lee Zeldin, who still \u200clost\u2062 to Hochul by roughly \u20626% in 2022. But with a new map, other Republicans could also be under \u2063threat \u2064of\u2063 losing their seat.<\/p>\n<p>Reps. Nick \u2062LaLota (R-NY) and\u200d Nicole Malliotakis (R-NY) are\u2063 currently in a good position to win reelection in November, with races rated as \u200c\u201clikely Republican\u201d \u2062and\u2063 \u201csolid Republican\u201d \u2062by\u2062 the Cook Political \u2062Report,\u2062 but a new\u200c map could change that.<\/p>\n<p>In 2022, the map drawn by the Democratic-led legislature targeted LaLota\u2019s and Malliotakis\u2019s districts, but \u2064they were struck down by a \u2064court, leading to the GOP-friendly maps\u2064 used in the last election.<\/p>\n<p>LaLota\u2019s district \u2014 the 1st Congressional\u200c District, on the eastern part of Long Island \u2014 was drawn to\u2062 have\u2064 a partisan\u200c voting index of \u2062plus-6 \u200cDemocratic, according to FiveThirtyEight, while the current\u2062 one is \u2062Republican plus-3, per\u200b the Cook Political Report.<\/p>\n<p>Malliotakis\u2019s district \u2014 \u200cthe \u206411th Congressional District, which includes\u200b all of \u2064Staten Island and parts of\u2063 Brooklyn \u2014 was drawn to\u2064 have a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/four-battle-to-win-new-colorado-congressional-district-gop-primary\/\" title=\"Four Battle to Win New Colorado Congressional District GOP Primary\">partisan voting index<\/a> of plus-7 Democratic,\u200b according to FiveThirtyEight, while the current one has a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/house-republicans-angered-by-freedom-caucus-forcing-vulnerable-members-into-tough-votes\/\" title=\"House Republicans upset as Freedom Caucus pressures vulnerable members into difficult votes.\">partisan voting \u2063index<\/a> of Republican plus-6, per the Cook Political Report.<\/p>\n<p>The\u200d new congressional map has\u2063 yet \u2062to be drawn, so which districts are changed and how they are changed is currently unknown,\u2062 but it\u2019s widely expected to be less favorable for \u2063Republicans than it was\u2063 two years ago. The new map is expected to be enacted in the coming months, ahead of\u2064 the June 25 primary election and the Nov. 5 general election.<\/p>\n<p> <\/p>\n<h2> How does John Katko&#8217;s history as a swing district representative impact his vulnerability\u200d in the upcoming election?<\/h2>\n<p><span>  John Katko (R-NY) as vulnerable in the upcoming\u200d election.\u2063 These representatives \u2062will not only have to defend their seats against strong Democratic \u200dcontenders but\u2062 also navigate the potential challenges posed by a redrawn congressional map.<\/p>\n<p>Rep.
