Fireman. Doorman. Lineman. These titles\u2063 have largely remained \u2063untouched when it comes to the suffix attached to them. No one talks about garbagewomen or linepersons, and for good reason. Unlike the white-collar professions that women typically go for, these fields \u200bare still \u2064dominated by men.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>According to job-seeker\u2064 website Zippia, 95 percent of garbagemen are men. When it comes to firemen, women get slightly better representation,\u2063 with men filling only\u200c 82 percent \u2064of positions. Women hold\u200b 4 percent of doormen roles. Only 5 percent of linemen aren\u2019t men. This is an injustice that must be remedied if we are to achieve true\u200d equity as a society.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2-long d-flex justify-content-center\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center; \" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-642589653\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1379703300879-0\" class=\"mb-30\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-2cc4cb8e86809fed61501589cbef6110 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-2cc4cb8e86809fed61501589cbef6110\"><\/div>\n<p>The white-collar world has led the way on this issue, even if the business\u2064 world still needs to do \u2064the work. \u200cWomen hold 41 percent of management roles. Twenty-eight percent of\u2062 C-suite positions are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/featured-insights\/diversity-and-inclusion\/women-in-the-workplace\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">occupied by women<\/a>. Obviously, both can \u2062be\u2063 improved. In that realm, \u200dthough, there are \u200b <a href=\"https:\/\/www.piratewires.com\/p\/gem-hr-software-dei\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">digital \u2062tools<\/a> management can use \u2064to help them find the \u201cright\u201d candidates \u2064when\u2064 they\u2019re trying to achieve the\u200d sex quotas that they totally aren\u2019t trying to achieve. Businesses would \u200dnever <a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2023\/07\/how-to-effectively-and-legally-use-racial-data-for-dei\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">subvert the law<\/a> in the name of \u200bsocial justice, after\u200b all.<\/p>\n<p>When it\u2064 comes to the aforementioned \u200bservice jobs, though, stronger tactics \u200bare required. There is something about those physical jobs, ones that are often dangerous and dirty, that is preventing the fairer of the sexes from applying. It\u2019s especially concerning as the female of the species \u2062is <a href=\"https:\/\/potw.org\/archive\/potw96.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">deadlier than the male<\/a>.\u200b There is absolutely\u200c no reason women cannot drive a garbage truck, fight a fire, open a door, or\u2063 put up\u2062 a telephone poll.<\/p>\n<p>Rosie the Riveter \u200bwould be disappointed were she an actual woman and still alive to\u2064 witness these troubling disparities, which \u200calso means the\u2063 first\u200d place to start would be a public relations \u2063campaign showing women working in \u200cthese professions. Sure, there isn\u2019t a war to pull all the men away\u2063 and force the issue \u2014\u200b yet \u2014 so we\u2019ll\u2063 also have to find \u2062some\u200c pioneering garbagewomen, firewomen, doorwomen, and \u2063linewomen \u200bto show the freedom and independence that comes\u200d with breaking the glass ceilings in those fields.<\/p>\n<p>We also need McKinsey and Company consultants \u200bto stop <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/featured-insights\/diversity-and-inclusion\/women-in-the-workplace\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">myopically focusing<\/a> \u200con professional positions and start working on solutions for \u200bblue-collar \u2064ones. Surely, they can \u2063do a better job with that \u2064than they did\u200b with CNN+.\u2064 Also, though, we must accept that change may take a\u200b generation or two.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-9250ae77d3bb6a86b78672ec302cc4ff fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-6\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-9250ae77d3bb6a86b78672ec302cc4ff\"><\/div>\n<p>As such,\u200b PBS needs \u2064to stop pushing Elmo and make Oscar the Grouch the main\u2062 spokespuppet. Maybe they\u2063 can even make \u2063a lady Oscar.\u2063 As a society working to\u2062 achieve equity, we must demand \u2062that it\u2019s Oscar,\u2062 or lady Oscar, out there\u2063 posting on social media about his glamorous, empowered life \u2063instead of Elmo asking people how they\u2019re feeling. We\u2019ll have \u2064to\u2062 figure \u200cout\u2063 some\u200d other pop culture icons to champion\u2064 the other roles to make sure growing\u2063 children see female representation in blue-collar positions.<\/p>\n<p>We can\u2019t rely on just PR campaigns, pop culture, and pioneering women to fix these disparities, though. Men will \u2064also \u200chave to step up and focus on \u200drecruiting and hiring more \u200bwomen into these \u2062fields, particularly as\u200d men currently dominate them. \u2063We can do it, brothers, and \u200cnot \u2064just \u2062in terms of legal work.<\/p>\n<p>For\u200c there is also\u200d the\u2063 fact that 93 percent of inmates in prison are men. This one may be\u200c a little \u200deasier as there\u200d are already more women in \u2064the business world. While \u200bI realize \u2064the\u2064 goal \u2063is to not get caught,\u2064 increased representation only increases the chances of a\u2064 girl \u200bmob\u2062 boss getting sent\u200c to \u200dthe slammer.<\/p>\n<p>Ladies, the world \u2064is yours. Take it. Remember the saying coined by a\u200c group of lesbian separatists, and not Hillary Clinton, that went, \u201cThe future \u200bis\u2064 female.\u201d\u200d You know what \u2063lesbian separatists weren\u2019t planning \u200con having around? Men. They were\u2063 ready to blaze the trail of an all-female society that would make Barbie blush.
