There is little doubt\u200b that \u2062he\u200d is widely admired for the work he \u200ddid\u2063 to end slavery and preserve the Union.<\/p>\n<p>But\u200b beyond\u200b these two important \u2062points, \u200bmost Americans know\u2064 little else about \u2064Lincoln\u2019s life.\u2064 A 2013 poll by Participant found that two-thirds of \u200cAmericans admitted to\u200b knowing \u201clittle to nothing\u201d about him. Eighty-three percent of respondents \u2063thought that \u2062the Emancipation Proclamation\u200c freed all the slaves in \u2063the United States.\u200d (It only\u200c freed the slaves \u200cin areas under \u200bConfederate control.) Another\u200c 40 percent \u2064believed\u200d that \u2063Lincoln was a Democrat. (Google only\u200d confuses matters when\u2064 it lists \u2064his party \u200daffiliation\u200b as \u201cNational \u2064Union \u200cParty,\u201d which was a\u200c temporary rebranding\u200b of \u200cthe Republican Party during \u2062the 1864 presidential election.) In\u2063 fact, Lincoln\u2064 was the first\u2063 Republican to be elected\u200b president.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h3>Teaching Lincoln&#8217;s Legacy<\/h3>\n<p>As a professor of American Studies at Christopher Newport University, I spend a great deal \u200cof time teaching my students about Abraham\u2062 Lincoln. I require them to read\u200c Lincoln\u2019s speeches and letters\u200c in the hope that they will come to appreciate the greatness of his mind, the political constraints in which he operated, and the\u200c moral\u2064 compass that \u200bled him\u2064 to fight for the principles \u200bof the Declaration of \u200bIndependence. Each \u2062summer \u200cI also teach these\u200d sorts of lessons to \u2064groups of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/taking-woke-education-to-court\/\" title=\"Taking Woke Education To Court\">high school teachers<\/a>\u200c around the country. I find\u200c that teachers are eager \u2063to better understand \u200bLincoln\u2019s life and legacy and to find new ways to\u200d convey that information in \u200btheir\u200d classrooms.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>In addition to teaching about Lincoln, over the past 15 years, I\u2019ve published many books about Lincoln and the \u2062Civil War Era. In the past \u206311\u200d years, I\u2019ve \u2064also had two\u2063 beautiful daughters. At\u2063 night\u2062 I often find \u2062myself reading\u2063 or telling \u200bbedtime stories\u2062 \u2014 sometimes \u200cabout history, but more often about the antics of talking\u200b animals.<\/p>\n<p>Recently, I decided to bring these two aspects of my life together \u2064by working with my girls to\u2063 write a fun and exciting children\u2019s book that melds \u2063history and adventure into an educational but\u200b lively chapter book for early readers.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h3>My \u2064Day with Abe \u200cLincoln<\/h3>\n<p><em>My Day with \u200cAbe Lincoln<\/em> tells the story\u2064 of a \u2062third grader\u200c named Lucy who doesn\u2019t\u200b want to go to school \u2062on \u2064Monday morning. (For parents of young children this\u2062 might sound all too familiar!) She throws a fit and\u2064 dresses in the \u200ccraziest\u200b outfit she can\u200c come up with, hoping her parents won\u2019t send her \u2062to school looking so weird.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>When she puts on the top\u200c hat from her \u2064brother\u2019s magic \u200bset, \u2062she travels back in \u2062time \u2062to Indiana in the 1820s. She doesn\u2019t know it yet, but \u200cher mission in the story is to give the \u2062hat to Lincoln. After meeting Abe and\u2064 his sister Sarah\u2062 on\u200d a dirt path in \u2062the woods, \u200dLucy\u2063 attends \u200cschool with them. At the end of the day, she goes to the Lincoln cabin where she meets Abe\u2019s father and stepmom.
