They rise to greatness by challenging seemingly insurmountable obstacles and, of course, by clashing \u200dwith stubborn \u2063adversaries. Take President Abraham \u200dLincoln, our esteemed political hero, who battled against Jefferson Davis and the Confederate army. \u2063Or Achilles, the first epic hero in literature, who confronted Hector. Even Superman, our beloved comic book hero, must \u200dcontend with the formidable Lex Luthor. And in the case\u200b of Rocky Balboa, arguably our\u2064 greatest modern\u2062 movie hero, he squares off against the indomitable Apollo Creed. But \u2064what sets Rocky and Apollo Creed apart from other hero stories is that their roles are intertwined, \u200dwith the antagonist ultimately becoming a hero in his own right \u2014\u2062 a hero who becomes as legendary as \u200cthe figure he once \u200bopposed.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>For four high-octane boxing films,\u200c Carl Weathers, who passed \u200caway this month at the age of 76, didn&#8217;t just play Apollo Creed; he embodied him. With his chiseled, \u2063Greek-god-like physique, a wingspan reminiscent of Lennox Lewis, \u2063and\u2063 an early-career aura of invincibility akin to \u2063Mike Tyson, Weathers brought an intimidating\u2064 physicality, a menacing swagger, and an infectious \u2064charisma to the \u2062ring in Rocky. It was Weathers&#8217;s portrayal\u2062 of Creed\u200d that allowed Stallone&#8217;s \u2063Rocky to \u2063become a\u2062 cinematic hero and\u2062 an urban icon for the city of Philadelphia. And it \u2063was this iconic role that transformed \u2064Weathers\u2062 from a relatively unknown actor into a\u2063 modern\u2063 movie legend.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Born in New Orleans\u2064 on January 14, 1948, Weathers initially pursued a career\u200b in sports, much like Jim Brown, Arnold \u200dSchwarzenegger, and Dwayne &#8220;The\u200d Rock&#8221; Johnson, who\u2062 transitioned from the field or the ring to the \u200bsilver\u2063 screen. While Weathers didn&#8217;t achieve the same level of success in sports as Brown,\u200d Johnson, and Schwarzenegger\u2064 did, his pivot to acting proved to be a game-changer. After only five years, Weathers landed a role \u200dthat surpassed any previous achievements by Brown or Johnson. Who would have\u200b thought that the same actor who could\u2062 strike fear into \u200cthe hearts of other boxers in the ring \u200ccould also bring audiences to tears of laughter?<\/p>\n<p>Apollo\u2062 Creed, aptly named, was a hero with countless faces.
