(Photo by NOAA\u200b via Getty Images)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>OAN\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oann.com\/tag\/elizabeth-volberding\">Elizabeth Volberding<br \/><\/a>11:35 AM \u2013 Tuesday, February 6, 2024<\/p>\n<p>Scientists\u2064 claim that when it comes to the Saffir-Simpson scale,\u2062 which gauges a hurricane\u2019s wind speed, storm intensity is reaching never-before-seen levels.\u2063 Researchers are now beginning to question the scale and are requesting that a new, higher threshold of risk be established \u2062for\u200b the most\u2064 gruesome storms.<\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1663871513696-art-3\" style=\"min-width: 320px; min-height: 50px; text-align: center;\">  \t<script>  \t\tgoogletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1663871513696-art-3'); });  \t<\/script>  <\/div>\n<div class=\"ad-slot__ad-label\">Advertisement<\/div>\n<\/p>\n<p>According to a recent study, storms are becoming so\u200c much stronger that a \u201cCategory\u2062 6\u201d \u2062level\u200c of intensity will \u2063soon be added to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhc.noaa.gov\/aboutsshws.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers looked into the possibility of expanding the scale \u2063to include a Category 6, and they maintained that this classification could serve to \u200bbetter\u200b alert people\u200b to the risks. <\/p>\n<p>According to the study \u2064released\u2062 on\u200d Monday in the \u200c <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1073\/pnas.2308901121\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Proceedings of the \u200cNational Academy of Sciences<\/a>, the world\u2019s hurricanes are becoming much stronger due to \u201crising ocean and atmosphere temperatures,\u201d \u2063scientists claim. Furthermore, a \u201cCategory 5 \u2064on the\u2062 conventional wind\u2063 scale undervalues its risks.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.noaa.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration<\/a> (NOAA) explained that hurricanes \u200din Category 5 can cause \u201ccatastrophic\u201d\u200c damage and \u201ccomplete roof failure on many residences and industrial buildings,\u201d as\u2062 well as prolonged\u2064 power \u2064outages. Hurricanes in Category 1 through 5 can reach wind speeds of 156-mph or more. <\/p>\n<p>The scale ends at Category 5 since winds that strong\u200c would \u201ccause rupturing damages that are serious no matter \u200bhow well it\u2019s\u2062 engineered,\u201d \u200dformer Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale director Robert Simpson <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vos.noaa.gov\/MWL\/apr1999.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said during a 1999 interview.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Michael Wehner, lead author \u200bof the recent research and a climate scientist at the \u2062Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory,\u200c made a statement regarding the purported rising storm intensity.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cAs a cautious scientist, you never want to cry wolf,\u201d said Wehner.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>However, Wehner and co-author Jim \u200bKossin, a science advisor at \u2063First Street Foundation and a retired federal scientist, determined that \u201cthe wolf is here,\u201d according to\u2064 their analysis of the signature of climate\u200d change in the strongest cyclones on record.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cWe found that\u200d five storms had exceeded this hypothetical Category\u200b 6, and that all of them were recent, since 2013,\u201d Wehner told reporters.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The most powerful tropical cyclones can now hold more energy \u200cdue to \u201csignificantly \u200bincreasing\u201d temperatures brought\u2062 on by \u201cgreenhouse \u2063gas emissions,\u201d Wehner and Kossin\u2063 claimed.<\/p>\n<p>The authors claimed that more cyclones are taking advantage of it, increasing their wind speeds \u200dand intensity,\u2062 and their data indicates that\u200c this phenomenon will happen more frequently as global temperatures are quickly rising.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cOur motivation here was to draw the connection between climate \u200bchange \u2014 that warming of\u200d the atmosphere,\u2064 the globe, \u2064from the burning of fossil fuels \u2014 \u2062to hurricanes and tropical cyclones,\u201d Wehner said, adding that he and\u200b Kossin view themselves as \u201crelatively conservative climate scientists.\u201d <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Kossin told the press \u200bthat their main goal is to \u201cinform broader discussions about how to better\u2063 communicate risk in a warming world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kossin continued, asserting that their findings highlight\u2064 the fact that when\u200c storms strengthen\u200c above \u200dthe 157 mph threshold for a Category 5 cyclone, \u200dthe risks associated\u200b with them rise, \u200bleading to an underestimation \u200cof risk.<\/p>\n<p>As a result, the researchers in this study claimed to have discovered the possibilities of that intensity happening\u200c in such storms that have more than doubled since 1979. They stated\u200b that\u200d the regions where the increasing dangers of these storms are of most concern are the \u201cGulf \u200cof Mexico, the Philippines, areas \u2062of Southeast Asia, and Australia.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cWe are \u200conly pointing out that as\u2063 a wind-only-based measure of risk, climate change is making it progressively inadequate,\u201d\u200c Kossin concluded.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Stay informed! This new classification would serve as a signal \u200cto the public that these storms\u200d are not only stronger but also potentially more damaging and dangerous.<\/p>\n<p>The current Saffir-Simpson scale, which was developed in the early\u200c 1970s,\u2063 categorizes\u200b hurricanes based solely\u2064 on \u2064wind speed. It\u200b ranges from Category 1 (74-95 \u2062mph winds) to Category 5 (157 mph or higher \u2063winds). However, as \u200dthe study points\u200d out, hurricanes in\u200c the\u2062 Category 5 range \u200dalready\u2064 cause \u2064catastrophic damage. They see themselves \u200cas conservative scientists \u2063who aim \u200bto provide accurate information to inform \u200bdiscussions about \u2062climate risks.<\/p>\n<p>The \u200cresearchers point out that \u2064the regions most at risk from these stronger hurricanes are areas such as the Gulf of \u2063Mexico, the Philippines, \u2063Southeast Asia, and \u2063Australia. However, it is important to \u2064note that these storms can have global impacts, given the\u200b interconnectedness of the world \u200dtoday.<\/p>\n<p>In conclusion, this study\u200d suggests that the Saffir-Simpson\u2063 Hurricane Wind Scale\u2064 should be expanded to include \u2063a Category \u200b6 classification to more accurately represent the risks \u2062associated with increasingly\u2064 intense storms. The researchers\u200d emphasize that \u2063the current Category 5 classification underestimates the dangers \u2064posed \u2063by these storms.
