And you certainly won&#8217;t hear Mark Zuckerberg say he regrets his efforts to manipulate the last presidential election. He spent hundreds of millions of dollars to influence everything from mail-in voting to the design of the physical ballots that were delivered to voters&#8217; homes, and\u2062 to this\u2063 day he seems proud of it.<\/p>\n<p>He\u200d also doesn&#8217;t \u2063seem that bothered by Facebook&#8217;s decision to censor the Hunter Biden laptop story. \u200dHe certainly didn&#8217;t release \u200dthe Facebook version of the &#8220;Twitter files,&#8221; or anything like it. There was no meaningful mea culpa. Zuckerberg\u2063 just said\u2063 the situation \u200c&#8221;sucks,&#8221; and that was the end of it.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s what makes this moment from yesterday&#8217;s hearing in\u200b the Senate Judiciary Committee on &#8220;online child\u200d safety&#8221; so interesting. After prodding from Senator Josh Hawley of Missouri, Zuckerberg stood up and apologized to families seated behind him. These are families who say their children were exploited or died \u200cbecause they encountered content on Meta&#8217;s social media apps \u2014 whether that&#8217;s because they were bullied and committed suicide, or because they bought drugs on Instagram, or participated in the &#8220;blackout challenge&#8221; and suffocated, or \u2062appeared in child pornography, or other unspeakable \u2062horrors along\u2063 those \u2063lines. Nobody should have to go through\u2062 what \u200cyour families have suffered. This is \u2062why we have \u2064invested so much and are going to\u2062 continue industry-leading efforts to \u2063make sure that \u200cno one has to go through the types of things your families have suffered.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Some outlets have suggested that this was an unscripted moment. I&#8217;m not sure I buy that. But it&#8217;s \u200dstill worth dissecting it a bit. The implication of\u2063 what Mark Zuckerberg said is that, if his \u2064social media platforms had done \u200bmore, maybe these people&#8217;s \u200bchildren\u200c would\u2064 still be alive. As carefully workshopped as this apology \u2064is, it&#8217;s still an \u2062unprecedented admission from \u200bthe head\u200d of\u200b a major technology company. Even though Zuckerberg stopped\u2064 short of admitting that his products\u2064 were directly responsible for any\u2064 deaths, he did convey some at least some \u200csense of remorse\u2063 to these grieving families. That&#8217;s the headline\u200d that&#8217;s been \u200cblasted everywhere \u200cin the media.<\/p>\n<p>But it&#8217;s important to clarify exactly what\u2062 Meta is \u2062accused\u200c of, and\u2064 what Mark Zuckerberg is apologizing for.<\/p>\n<p>Last summer, the Wall Street Journal\u2063 reported that Instagram not only hosts child pornography, but also promotes child pornography through \u200cits algorithm. (This was a discovery that, incidentally, did not prompt any kind\u2062 of sustained advertiser boycott from major\u200d corporations, unlike the time Elon Musk agreed with a post that criticized the A.D.L.). In any event, Instagram was exposed promoting \u2062some of the worst kind of content imaginable. As\u200d Ted Cruz demonstrated at yesterday&#8217;s hearing, Instagram \u200bdidn&#8217;t even block child pornography that its algorithm had identified. Here&#8217;s how Mark Zuckerberg explained that:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Ted Cruz destroys Mark\u2062 Zuckerberg \u200cover child s*xu*l exploitation material\ud83d\udd25<\/p>\n<p>The media\u200d only \u2064ever talks about\u2062 CSE on X even though it&#8217;s a much bigger problem on Instagram.<\/p>\n<p>They don&#8217;t \u200bactually care about CSE.<\/p>\n<p>They&#8217;re just terrified of free speech on X. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/rCbwVF7nMa\">pic.twitter.com\/rCbwVF7nMa<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Libs of TikTok (@libsoftiktok) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/libsoftiktok\/status\/1752746256248766875?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 31, 2024<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Obviously, you don&#8217;t want to falsely censor someone for posting child pornography, when they&#8217;re not\u200d doing it. \u2062That part of Zuckerberg&#8217;s answer makes complete sense. And it&#8217;s understandable that maybe Instagram&#8217;s \u2063algorithm wasn&#8217;t perfect at identifying this kind \u200bof\u2064 content on the fly.\u200c The problem for Instagram is that, for years, they\u200b refused to censor child pornography that was right out in the open. According\u2063 to the Journal, users on Instagram could use hashtags \u200clike &#8220;preteensex&#8221; to find these materials. And the \u2064platform made no \u200ceffort to shut that down.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2063 was like Twitter before Elon Musk bought it, when \u200dthat degenerate \u2062Yoel Roth was running things. At most, users would get this little dialogue box, which they could easily dismiss, even when there was\u200d no doubt what they were looking for.<\/p>\n<p>To the extent \u200bthat Zuckerberg was apologizing for anything at yesterday&#8217;s hearing, it \u200dwas this flagrant disregard for the welfare of children \u2014\u200d and possibly for the various federal laws against child pornography \u200bthat his \u200dcompany\u2064 may or may not have violated. And that apology is\u200b long overdue. That&#8217;s actually the\u2064 least he could have done under these circumstances.<\/p>\n<p>But to be clear, Zuckerberg was not apologizing for the\u2062 mental health effects \u200bof Instagram and Facebook. \u200bYou may have heard that, but it&#8217;s not really\u200d true.\u2062 We can be sure of this because,\u200d later\u2063 on in the hearing, Zuckerberg denied that there&#8217;s any research showing that his products impair the mental well-being of \u2062young people. It&#8217;s common sense. You can tell intuitively that children who spend hours staring at a screen are \u200cgoing to suffer as a result. Our brains were not wired to scroll endlessly through social \u200cmedia feeds. And typically, when you do \u2062things that\u2064 are extremely unnatural \u2062\u2014 especially \u2062when you&#8217;re \u2062a child, whose\u200d brain is constantly changing \u2014 then bad things happen. We\u200c don&#8217;t need research to tell us this because we all know it&#8217;s true.<\/p>\n<p>Putting aside the actual \u200bcontent that kids are engaging with on the internet \u2014 ignoring the \u200dfact that much of the content is actively harmful and degrading, and\u2062 worse \u2014 just the very fact that children are spending \u200cthe majority of their waking hours staring at a little glowing rectangle is troubling enough on its own.\u2064 If you went up to someone who didn&#8217;t \u2062know anything about \u2063the Internet \u2014 maybe \u2063someone who just came\u200c here \u200bthrough a \u2062time \u2063portal \u2063from 1920 \u2014\u200b and you\u2064 told them that the focal point of life for most children in our \u200cculture is a little screen, and\u2064 they spend almost all of their time just staring \u2064at this screen, and they care about nothing as much as they care about the \u2063screen, that person would automatically recognize that this is a very bad development. No other information \u200crequired. In fact, he would go back to his \u200bown\u200d time\u200c period in a \u200cpanic, having learned that human\u200d beings 100 years in the future have become voluntarily zombified. No research\u2064 required \u2064to know that this is bad.<\/p>\n<p>But in any event, we do have research, and a lot of it. Researchers have demonstrated a causal link between social \u200dmedia use and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/dr-phil-warns-chaos-agents-are-strategically-targeting-children-with-social-media\/\" title=\"Dr. Phil cautions about deliberate targeting of kids on social media by 'chaos' agents.\">poor mental health\u2062 outcomes<\/a>. \u2063It&#8217;s not just correlation; it goes beyond \u2063that. Jonathan Haidt is one of the leading social psychologists\u200b in the country. He&#8217;s at NYU. Here&#8217;s how\u2062 he responded yesterday: &#8220;Zuckerberg is \u2063wrong. There are now dozens of experiments showing causality. Twenge\u2063 looked at more than a dozen other possible explanations\u2064 \u2014 from COVID to the economy \u2014 and none of them fully explained what was happening. As you&#8217;d expect, the\u2062 graphs for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/utah-governor-vetoes-transgender-athlete-bill-i-try-to-err-on-side-of-compassion\/\" title=\"Utah Governor Vetoes Transgender Athlete Bill: 'I Try to Err on Side of Compassion'\">youth suicide rate<\/a> look similar. As far as these researchers can tell, there&#8217;s no other serious alternative explanation for\u2062 what&#8217;s happening here, except cellphone and \u2063social media use. That&#8217;s because this\u200d phenomenon happens all over the world, across varying\u2062 economic conditions. Everywhere kids had cell\u2064 phones, mental health declined. The same pattern played out in the five Nordic nations \u2063(Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Iceland, and Finland).<\/p>\n<p>Of course, this doesn&#8217;t\u200c mean that other factors aren&#8217;t contributing in some way to the decline in mental health in this country. The number of Americans who go to church every week has dropped from 70 million\u200c in 2008 to 62 million in \u200d2022, for example. That&#8217;s probably \u2064not helping, and obviously it&#8217;s \u200cnot \u2063just happened because the iPhone was invented. There&#8217;s also the rise of \u200cvictim culture in schools, which teaches young\u2063 people that nothing is ever\u200c their fault. \u200dThey&#8217;re always &#8220;oppressed,&#8221; at least if they\u200c can fit themselves within one of the ten million\u200d &#8220;oppressed&#8221; identities.<\/p>\n<p>As Jean Twenge writes in her book &#8220;Monitoring the Future,&#8221; many more young people have an &#8220;external\u2062 locus of control&#8221; \u2063as compared to the \u200d1970s. That means they believe that they don&#8217;t have control over their lives, which is a feeling that leads to higher instances of depression and \u200banxiety.<\/p>\n<p>So this has been a trend for some time. But again, in\u2063 the chart there, you see\u200d a massive spike \u200baround 2012, when most young people got smartphones for the first time. As far as arguments about correlation go, this one is pretty strong. But it gets stronger when\u2062 you look at the evidence showing causation. And that evidence is\u200b mounting.<\/p>\n<p>A recent study in JAMA Pediatrics for\u200c example found that regular social media\u2064 use appears to change the brains\u2062 of young people. It modifies how\u2064 they \u2064respond to social cues. As the study states: &#8220;This cohort \u2064study examined whether early adolescents&#8217; frequency of checking behaviors on 3\u200d popular \u200csocial media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, \u2062and\u200d Snapchat) was associated with trajectories of functional brain development across adolescence. Adolescents who engaged in\u200d high (habitual) checking behaviors \u2063showed\u200b distinct neural trajectories when anticipating social feedback compared with those who engaged in moderate or \u2064low (non-habitual)\u2062 checking behaviors, suggesting that habitual \u2063social media checking early in adolescence is associated with divergent brain development over time.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The\u200c study goes on to state that researchers don&#8217;t yet know exactly what the\u2063 effects of \u200bthis &#8220;divergent \u2063brain development&#8221; might be, largely because this research is still relatively new.\u200d But it does appear, based on \u2063all the evidence we have, that social media use is rewiring\u200c the brains of \u2063young people. It causes development that \u2064is clearly unnatural and not fully understood. So, again: Common sense, historical trends, and medical research are all pointing in the same direction here. They&#8217;re all pointing to the conclusion that introducing kids to smartphones and social media \u200ccould cause real and\u2063 permanent \u2064damage.<\/p>\n<h4><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/onelink.to\/dwapp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CLICK HERE TO GET THE DAILY \u200cWIRE\u2062 APP<\/a><\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Given that conclusion, the solution is obvious. Badgering Mark Zuckerberg at a hearing is never going to solve this problem. I&#8217;m all for having laws \u2064protecting kids \u2014 particularly when child sex trafficking and pornography are involved. But at a certain point parents need to\u200d be\u200b willing\u200c to do some actual \u200bparenting. Accountability here needs to begin not with one tech CEO, but with\u200b the millions \u2063of parents who give their kids devices with Internet access in the first place.<\/p>\n<p>According\u2063 to the \u200bNew York-Presbyterian health care system, 42% of kids these days have smartphones\u200d by age\u2062 10. And 91% have one by 14. That means almost all kids have phones \u200dat least two years before society has deemed them \u200bresponsible enough to operate a vehicle.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s \u2064no conceivable valid reason why a 10-year-old\u200c needs a smartphone,\u2062 especially when dumb phones that only call or text still exist and can be purchased easily. The underlying \u200bproblem is that most of the\u2064 parents are addicted to social media too, so they \u200dget their kids started on the habit so that it frees up more time for them to \u2062scroll on their own phones. That&#8217;s how the phones have taken over most \u200bhouseholds and become the focal points\u200b of most \u2063families. \u200cThat is\u2064 the root\u200b of the problem but of course,\u200d senators can&#8217;t subpoena millions of parents and yell at them. That wouldn&#8217;t make great television, \u200cin any event. So instead we demand performative\u200d apologies\u200b from tech billionaires for making the dangerous thing \u2064that we ourselves are willingly buying and handing to our children.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s\u2063 a lot like handing your kid a cigarette while simultaneously ranting about the evils of\u2063 the tobacco industry. In \u200bthis case, it&#8217;s tempting to offload all of \u200bthe blame to Mark Zuckerberg, as \u2063unlikable as he may be to many people.\u2062 That&#8217;s \u2063probably why there was so much applause at yesterday&#8217;s hearing, as Zuckerberg was dressed down by Josh Hawley. But there \u200dis now \u2064clear evidence that children are suffering while \u200cthis \u2063theater plays out in the Senate. They&#8217;re becoming more depressed, more addicted to drugs, less \u200dself-assured, and so reliant on smartphones that their brains are quite literally changing. The solution is not to\u200c bully Mark Zuckerberg, even though he&#8217;s maybe the easiest person on the planet\u200c to bully. The \u2063solution\u2062 is something far simpler,\u200c but apparently quite\u2064 radical these days. The\u2063 solutions if for parents to\u2062 be \u2064parents.<\/p>\n<p> <\/p>\n<h2> What role should schools, policymakers, and community organizations play in addressing the addictive nature of social media and promoting \u2063healthy alternatives for young people<\/h2>\n<p><span>  Net access and unlimited social media access without \u200bany supervision or restrictions.<\/p>\n<p>Parents need to take responsibility for their children&#8217;s well-being and set boundaries for technology \u2064use. It&#8217;s not enough to rely on tech oligarchs to regulate their platforms and protect children. These companies have shown time and\u2063 time again that their main priority is profit, not the safety and mental health of young users.<\/p>\n<p>Instead of \u200bwaiting for apologies from tech oligarchs, parents should be proactive in understanding the risks and educating their children about responsible \u2062technology use. They should \u200destablish rules and limitations, encourage offline activities, and promote open communication with \u200dtheir children about their online experiences.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore,\u200d society as a whole \u2062needs to\u2063 address the addictive nature of social media and its impact on mental health.
