It’s ironic that this month is followed by Valentine’s Day, ‍considering the high failure rates of second and third‌ marriages. The irony becomes⁣ clear when we consider the struggles faced by divorced women.

Unfortunately, it is often women, who were⁣ promised sisterhood through feminism, that show insensitivity towards the struggles of divorced women. This insensitivity makes it even more challenging to strengthen marriages and bring about ‌divorce ⁣reform.

Interestingly, women are the ones who initiate divorce more frequently, despite the fact that divorce hits women harder than men. Women experience an average decline⁣ of 41‍ percent in post-divorce household income, almost double the loss experienced by men. Additionally, they now have to bear the burden of life’s expenses alone, ‌which can be a significant financial blow, especially for necessities and retirement.

It is worth noting that the majority of divorces involve low-conflict ⁤marriages, not high-conflict ones involving⁤ domestic ⁣violence. While husbands may be more likely to be unfaithful, they are also more likely to remain married after an affair.

Married Women: Lack⁤ of Empathy and Gratitude

Shortly after my ex left, a female friend exclaimed how fortunate I was to be back in the dating pool. ‍But ⁤honestly, ⁢I would have preferred⁢ someone reliable who could help with daily tasks and share ⁣financial responsibilities. Not to mention having an extra pair of hands when I’m sick.

A woman in an online forum, who had been abandoned, expressed her frustration with people who had never experienced her situation telling ⁢her to move on. This seems to be a common pet peeve⁤ among divorced women.

Women Hindering Divorce Reform

Forty-eight U.S. states allow “no-fault divorce,” enabling ⁣one spouse to unilaterally divorce the other without any specific reason. These laws are in violation of the‍ 14th Amendment to the Constitution.

Interestingly, women‌ were early supporters of this system. Some argue that these unconstitutional laws should remain in place, even though revoking ⁣them⁤ would still allow fault-based divorce for cases involving domestic violence. It ⁤is important to note that most divorces involve low-conflict ⁢marriages, with boyfriends being more likely to be abusers than husbands. There are already extensive state and federal laws⁤ protecting domestic violence victims.

Even when‍ modest reform bills have been proposed, specifically targeting low-conflict marriages and providing protections for victims of domestic violence, women have‌ staunchly opposed ⁣any changes to divorce laws. I witnessed this firsthand ‍while advocating for reform in Georgia. A group of ‌women shut down ‌our progress, claiming that any reform would endanger the lives of women. This was a misguided stance. While I understand the need to protect victims of abuse, it is crucial to work together for ⁤the‌ greater good. Your cause is not the only one.

Ladies, if you are contemplating divorce, take a moment to pause. Don’t let minor issues tear⁢ your marriage apart. Put effort into strengthening your relationship and appreciate the blessings you have. Stand up for‍ marriage in our culture, as it is often overlooked. Educate yourself about the consequences of ‌divorce and support divorce reform.

Because for many of us, your actions and assumptions only make an already difficult situation even harder.

Beverly Willett is a former lawyer ‌and co-founder of the Coalition for Divorce Reform. She is also the author of “Disassembly Required: A Memoir of Midlife Resurrection.”

Why ‍do‍ some married women dismiss the struggles of ‌divorced women ⁢and urge them to “move on” instead of offering sympathy and support?

Henomenon, where married women lack empathy and gratitude towards divorced women. This lack⁣ of understanding and support only perpetuates ‌the challenges divorced women ⁣face‌ in rebuilding their lives and finding happiness again.

Divorce is not a decision taken lightly‌ by‌ anyone involved, especially women who often‍ carry the emotional burden‍ of the breakup. Instead of offering‌ sympathy and support, married women tend to‍ dismiss their struggles and urge them to “move⁤ on.” This dismissal ignores the pain, grief, and adjustments that divorced women go through.

Furthermore, married women ‍fail to ⁤recognize the privileges they enjoy in⁣ their‌ marriages. They may take for granted the emotional⁢ and‍ financial support they receive from their partners. It‍ is these very privileges that many divorced women long for and struggle to find on their own.

Another aspect that⁢ exacerbates the lack ⁣of empathy is the stigma associated with divorce. Society still views‌ divorce as a failure, and⁤ this judgment is often projected onto divorced ‌women.⁤ Rather than ⁣being seen as individuals who⁤ had the strength to leave an⁢ unhappy and‍ unhealthy marriage, they ⁤are labeled as failures and discarded.

Feminism and Divorce

Feminism, at its‌ core, aims to empower ⁣women and dismantle gender inequalities. It seeks to create a society where women have‍ equal rights and opportunities.‌ However, the lack of empathy and support ⁢from some women ⁤towards divorce contradicts ⁤the‌ feminist principles of sisterhood and solidarity.

By standing ‍in solidarity with divorced women, feminists can play a vital role in dismantling the stigma surrounding divorce. They can advocate for reforms that address the financial insecurity faced by divorced women, as well as the emotional and social challenges they encounter.

Moreover, feminists can ⁤work‌ towards promoting healthy relationships and marriages for all individuals.⁢ This involves addressing the gender norms and expectations that shape marital‌ dynamics, ensuring women have equal decision-making power, and encouraging open communication and mutual respect.

Conclusion

Divorce Month, followed by Valentine’s Day, represents a paradox in our society. While⁣ divorce rates increase, celebrating love and relationships becomes the focal⁣ point. It is essential to recognize the⁢ struggles of divorced ‌women and work ‍towards creating more empathetic and supportive communities.

Married women should embrace empathy and gratitude by acknowledging the privileges they have in their marriages. By‌ doing so, they can provide the support and understanding that divorced‍ women often need during such challenging ‌times.

Feminism also has a critical role to play in addressing the issues faced by divorced women.⁢ By standing ⁤together, feminists can challenge the stigma‍ surrounding divorce and advocate for social and economic reforms that create a more equitable society for all.

Ultimately, by⁢ promoting empathy, understanding, ‍and ⁢equality, we can work towards‍ stronger and healthier relationships and marriages, ⁢beyond just ‌the month of⁤ love.

January is dubbed Divorce Month, with the highest number of U.S. divorce filings.
