Such was the case\u200b with one couple who, after nearly nine months of demanding their surrogate Heathyr abort, left \u200ca hospital in 2020 with a baby \u2063boy in their arms.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Single mother Heathyr went into \u2063the surrogacy application and\u200d matching process, hoping\u200d she would \u201cbe on the same page\u201d with \u2064the couple about ending the\u200b life of the unborn child.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2-long d-flex justify-content-center\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center; \" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-1949225506\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1379703300879-0\" class=\"mb-30\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-f257a3c88eb8f2eabc2e40151d90a4ab fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-f257a3c88eb8f2eabc2e40151d90a4ab\"><\/div>\n<p>\u201cI personally do not believe in termination unless there is \u200csomething that will hurt the quality of life of the child,\u201d she \u2062explained in a series of\u200b viral TikTok videos. \u201cI\u2019m probably\u200b saying that wrong, but I don\u2019t think it\u2019s\u200d fair to bring a child into\u2063 the world if they have severe \u2062brain damage\u2064 and they\u2019re probably going to die \u200ca few\u2062 days after \u200dbirth or something \u200cof that instance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her agency \u200bultimately paired her with a self-proclaimed Catholic couple who claimed they did \u200bnot believe in abortion. During legal negotiations,\u200b Heathyr\u2019s agency took note of both parties\u2019 \u200cconvictions about ending life in the \u200cwomb and added them to the surrogacy contract.<\/p>\n<p>Heathyr would later learn that even the most detailed surrogacy contracts don\u2019t protect women and the child they are carrying from \u200bemotional and physical harm.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Terms And Conditions<\/h2>\n<p>The couple \u2064openly desired a set of boy-girl twins, which\u200d they tried to get by placing two handpicked embryos, \u200bno doubt taking advantage of the normalized reproductive technologies trend \u200cof choosing\u200c a\u2063 child\u2019s\u200d sex, in Heathyr\u200b in December \u20622019. Heathyr became pregnant, but only one of\u200b the embryos stuck.<\/p>\n<p>Up until\u2062 the\u200d pregnancy, Heathyr said her relationship with the intended parents \u200cwas friendly.\u200c The wife \u200dtexted, called, and FaceTimed daily- happy to share in their excitement about fulfilling \u200ctheir dream of \u200btwins. Once Heathyr joyfully\u2064 delivered the news that, after 10 years of infertility, the couple would soon take home \u200done\u200c baby, \u2063both husband\u200d and \u2062wife \u200dbecame distant.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis really\u2062 confused me. \u2018What do you \u200cmean? It\u2019s\u2062 a baby. \u200bIt\u2019s a healthy baby. I\u2019m not \u200dunderstanding,\u2019\u201d Heathyr recalled.<\/p>\n<p>The couple, in denial that their \u200bplans for twins were dashed, \u200ddemanded Heathyr get another ultrasound to confirm there was only one sac.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-d0539f21c0cc89e47f18792cbc2e1612 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-10\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-d0539f21c0cc89e47f18792cbc2e1612\"><\/div>\n<p>Heathyr recalled thinking the appointment went well after she\u2064 heard the baby\u2019s heartbeat. Shortly\u200b after\u200d that checkup, however, Heathyr received \u200ca call from her surrogacy \u200cagency about\u2062 the couple that hired her to carry their\u200d child.<\/p>\n<p>Heathyr assumed the worst happened to the parents. Instead, she was told the couple who previously agreed with her stance on abortion wanted her to end the life of their baby. The couple blamed \u200dtheir \u2063demands for Heathyr to \u2062take a risky chemical abortion \u2063pill on panic about the \u200blooming Covid-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-28\">\u201cThe \u200cgist of it was, \u2018Heathyr, \u200dwe are so sorry, but you \u200cknow, this virus is getting pretty bad, and we just think it would be best for you to have a termination at this time. And we will try again when the virus is \u200bover\u200d with, and we \u200dwould be happy to\u2062 work with\u2063 you again,\u2019\u201d Heathyr said.<\/p>\n<p>The news left Heathyr \u201cbawling\u201d over\u2063 the\u200c possibility of aborting a perfectly healthy child.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s their baby, and\u2064 I don\u2019t want\u2064 to\u200d make them have a baby they don\u2019t want, but also, they\u2064 know my\u2064 views on termination, and I thought they didn\u2019t believe in \u2062termination,\u201d Heathyr \u200dsaid.<\/p>\n<p>During a Zoom call\u200d with the intended parents, Heathyr\u2019s first\u200c communication with them\u200c since receiving the news, the father again pushed abortion.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe is just yelling at me that I\u2019m going to have a termination. I\u2019m doing it. \u2063It\u2019s\u200b their baby, it\u2019s not my decision. And if I don\u2019t, they are suing me,\u201d Heathyr \u200dsaid, noting the exchange left her, once again, in tears.<\/p>\n<p>She immediately called her lawyer to \u2062determine if her agreement to exchange her\u200b womb for money\u200d meant she had\u200b to end a child\u2019s life. Legal counsel confirmed the surrogacy contract did not allow for a forced abortion unless\u2062 it met Heathyr\u2019s previously disclosed standards. They also said the couple\u200b could not sue \u2064her for continuing the pregnancy.<\/p>\n<p>Yet, the \u2063couple continued harassing\u2062 Heathyr\u2019s OBGYN office daily with\u2064 mail and emails about her getting an abortion. The couple and their lawyer also tried to coerce Heathyr into signing an addendum that said if she contracted Covid, she would be\u2064 required to \u200cend the child\u2019s life. She did not sign but agreed to test\u200b on a regular \u2062basis.<\/p>\n<p>As the pregnancy progressed, Heathyr tried\u2062 to involve\u200c the parents by calling them into doctor\u2019s appointments and \u200doffering to send ultrasound pictures.\u200c The couple routinely ignored \u2063her, told no one they\u200c were expecting \u2062a \u200dbaby, and kept up\u2064 the abortion pressure through 38 weeks of gestation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStill to this day, I have all \u200dof my ultrasound pictures from that pregnancy because they \u200ddidn\u2019t want any of them,\u201d Heathyr \u200bsaid.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">More Harm \u2063Than Good<\/h2>\n<p>Legal \u2062damages may not have been possible,\u2064 but turning babymaking and gestation into a transaction means even the most legally sound surrogacy contracts like\u2062 Heathyr\u2019s can result in harm\u200b to the baby and woman carrying him.<\/p>\n<p>The baby buyers\u2019\u200b open desire to\u2064 rid themselves of the \u2062responsibility of a\u200c child with their DNA caused Heathyr \u2062significant \u200demotional stress. The parents\u2019\u2063 aggressive \u200ddetermination\u200c to \u2063end the\u200b child\u2019s life, however, left her second-guessing about leaving a baby behind.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cObviously, if\u2063 they \u2062really didn\u2019t want him, I \u2063would have \u2062tried to get him because I don\u2019t want him to go into like foster \u200dcare. \u200dIt\u200d never ended up \u200dcoming to that, but like \u2062I was so worried \u2063every day, stressed, like crying\u200c myself to sleep. This\u200c poor baby,\u201d\u200b Heathyr explained. \u201cSo much work, medication, and money went into this baby, and they still are\u2062 asking me if I\u2019m going to terminate if I test positive for Covid.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Babies and the women \u200bwho carry them\u200c form a unique and undeniable\u200d physical and emotional bond during gestation.
