The Justice Department remains\u2062 committed to ensuring the\u200c safety of every community in our country, free from the devastating \u2062impact of violent crime.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>As part of this initiative, the department will\u200d leverage the FBI&#8217;s Gun Violence Analytic\u2064 Cell to identify additional federal investigations that can \u200bbe launched to combat carjackings and other violent crimes. Federal prosecutors will also\u2064 be actively involved in tracking and handling cases \u2063related to violent crime.<\/p>\n<p>While\u2063 many major\u2064 cities across the\u200d United States have experienced \u200ca decline in \u2064crime rates, particularly \u200dhomicides, Washington, D.C. has unfortunately witnessed an opposite trend.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/us-news\/homicide-rates-fell-sharply-in-2023-after-rising-during-pandemic-4f84207f\">The \u2062Wall Street Journal<\/a>, homicides in the district increased by 35 percent\u200b and robberies by \u200b67 percent, contributing to an overall 39 percent rise in\u200d violent \u200bcrime. Shockingly, carjackings surged by a staggering 82 percent, while\u200b other cities such as Philadelphia, \u200cHouston, and\u2063 Los Angeles \u2064experienced a 15 percent decrease in homicides in 2023 compared to the previous \u2062year.<\/p>\n<p>Matthew Graves,\u2062 the U.S. attorney for the District of \u2063Columbia, attributed this crime surge to \u2064lenient criminal justice laws that\u2063 result in judges handing out shorter sentences to\u200c younger offenders,\u2063 as reported by <em>The Wall Street Journal<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The rise in violent crime in Washington, D.C. has not only posed a\u2064 threat to public safety but has also taken\u200c an economic toll, leading to the closure \u2064of businesses.
