To the shock and outrage of Ryan Gosling, the ladies of \u201cThe View,\u201d and die-hard \u201cBarbie\u201d movie fans everywhere, Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig were \u201c snubbed<\/a>\u201d Tuesday when the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced this year\u2019s Oscar nominees. The consensus is that the \u201cpatriarchy\u201d and \u201csexism\u201d account for Robbie and Gerwig\u2019s exclusion from the best actress and best director categories, respectively.<\/p>\n

Supporting \u201cBarbie\u201d stars Ryan Gosling and America Ferrera, who themselves received nominations for their roles in the film, have publicly criticized the Academy\u2019s decision not to include Gerwig and Robbie mostly on account of the political messaging in the film (not necessarily Gerwig and Robbie\u2019s artistic talent).<\/p>\n

\u201cThey made history, they set a new bar,\u201d Ferrera said<\/a>. \u201c[T]he impact of what they made is, and will continue to be felt in our culture. I think I join a lot of people in wanting to see them acknowledged for that.\u201d Likewise, Gossling wrote<\/a> in a statement that Gerwig and Robbie \u201cpushed the culture\u201d and \u201cmade history.\u201d<\/p>\n

Alyssa Farah Griffin echoed these sentiments on \u201cThe View.\u201d Suggesting sexism was behind Gerwig\u2019s exclusion, Griffin said, \u201cIt does sorta feel like the message of the film was missed.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd the patriarchy rules again,\u201d Bono\u2019s nepo baby daughter, actress Eve Hewson<\/a>, wrote on Instagram.<\/p>\n

The first and most obvious problem with the best actress \u201csexism\u201d allegations is that the other nominees for the category are all<\/em> women. It is the best actress<\/em> category, meaning the award only goes to the best female<\/em> performers. Perhaps Robbie would have a case to make if the other actresses weren\u2019t actresses but trans-identifying males. Since the other nominees are, in fact, real women, the \u201cpatriarchy\u201d cries are absurd.<\/p>\n

For Gerwig, the misogyny charges are equally ridiculous. Gerwig was previously <\/em>nominated in the best director category for her 2017 film \u201cLady Bird.\u201d This is an impressive feat, given that women are a minority among movie directors in the United States.<\/p>\n
Indeed, an annual report<\/a> on \u201cgender inequality\u201d in the film industry found that women accounted for 14 percent of the top 100 grossing U.S. films in 2023, and In 2022, women accounted<\/a> for 14.6 percent of all<\/em> movie directors in the U.S.<\/p>\n
Among the 5 nominees for the best director category this year is female director Justine Triet, who received a nomination for her movie \u201cAnatomy of a Fall.\u201d This means that contrary to what \u201cBarbie\u201d fans are contending, women are overrepresented<\/em> in the best director category relative to the number of female directors that exist.<\/p>\n
The other implication from Gerwig\u2019s supporters is that one of the filmmakers nominated doesn\u2019t deserve to be recognized. \u201cGreta Gerwig\u2019s omission is crazily wrong,\u201d wrote<\/a> author and journalist Kurt Andersen. \u201cCould\u2019ve easily been in place of Scorsese, nominated for a film that isn\u2019t even one of his own ten best.\u201d<\/p>\n

Really? \u201cBarbie\u201d is better than Martin Scorsese\u2019s \u201c Killers of the Flower Moon<\/a>,\u201d a gripping and beautiful cinematic masterpiece that sheds light on a dramatic and horrifying piece of little-known American history? I don\u2019t think so.<\/p>\n
\u201cBarbie\u201d certainly wasn\u2019t better than director Christopher Nolan\u2019s \u201cOppenheimer,\u201d either, which, as Aaron Gleason writes<\/a>, \u201cmanages to turn all our myths about the atomic bomb into a coherent narrative around the life of one man,\u201d orienting \u201cthe camera inward, on the human soul.\u201d<\/p>\n
By contrast, \u201cBarbie\u201d is a children\u2019s movie that starts out as a blast and ends with a long lecture. The film\u2019s set design, wardrobe, and choreography are sincerely imaginative and gorgeous, but the second half of the film falls flat as Gerwig attempts to chaotically cram in as much woke gobbledygook as possibl e <\/a>before the credits roll. As Kyle Smith said<\/a> in The Wall Street Journal, \u201cAs bubbly as the film appears, its script is like a grumpier-than-average women\u2019s studies seminar.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cBarbie\u201d is not artful, nor does it offer any thoughtful cultural commentary as its proponents claim. It\u2019s hard to say what message Gerwig was trying to convey in \u201cBarbie\u201d other than the tired \u201cmen are bad\u201d and \u201cwomen are oppressed\u201d lines.<\/p>\n
There\u2019s a reason the arguments \u201cBarbie\u201d fans are making in defense of Gerwig and Robbie rarely center around the craft of directing or acting. In Communist countries like China and Cuba, people are frequently promoted and awarded for their politics, not their merits. Outcry over Gerwig and Robbie\u2019s \u201csnubbing\u201d is simply another sign of America\u2019s descent into cultural Marxism.<\/p>\n
\u201cBarbie\u201d wasn\u2019t an incredible piece of art; it was eye candy propaganda. It \u201cpushed the culture\u201d and \u201cmade history,\u201d Gossling said. In translation: It furthered the leftist ideology, automatically making it masterful and \u201cgroundbreaking,\u201d irrespective of whether it really was.<\/p>\n
In the same vein, the \u201cBarbie\u201d Academy outrage highlights the entitlement and double standards created by identity politics. The reason everyone is up in arms over the Academy\u2019s decision to snub Robbie and Gerwig is the same reason people claim Claudine Gay was fired from Harvard due to racism and Fani Willis is under scrutiny because she\u2019s an \u201c African American<\/a>\u201d woman.<\/p>\n
In truth, Greta Gerwig\u2019s status as an Oscar-level director is questionable, Claudine Gay is a serial plagiarist, and Fani Willis<\/a> paid her unqualified likely lover hundreds of thousands of taxpayer dollars as they conspired to disenfranchise Georgian voters. None of these things have anything to do with sex or race, but in a culture that perpetually victimizes and elevates people based on their immutable qualities, it\u2019s all that matters.<\/p>\n
Honest brokers know Margot Robbie\u2019s \u201csnubbing\u201d has nothing to do with sexism, given that all the other nominees in the best actress category are women. They also know Greta Gerwig isn\u2019t a genius director, nor was she discriminated against because women are already disproportionately represented in the best director category. <\/p>\n
The only people under the illusion that \u201cBarbie\u2019s\u201d director and lead actress are entitled to an Oscar are little girls between the ages of 5 and 12 and leftist zealots who measure art based on its politics.<\/p>\n
