The strike, which began‍ on Monday, marks the first-ever walkout organized by the California Faculty Association (CFA),⁢ a union representing over 29,000 employees in the state.

The strike saw faculty members from all 23 CSU campuses participate in the demonstration, calling for better pay and improved working conditions. The CFA initiated ⁣the strike after perceived‌ disrespect from the university, as they claimed that their four contract proposals presented to‌ CSU management on January 8th were not given due consideration.

Furthermore, the strike coincided with the⁢ start of the spring semester, making‍ it the first-ever walkout to occur on the first day of class ‌instruction. The CFA aimed to draw attention to their demands by launching the strike when⁤ students returned ‍for the new semester.

In addition to higher pay, the ⁤striking workers are calling for parental leave, reduced police presence on campuses, and increased mental health services for students. The union has presented a demand for⁣ a 12% ‌pay increase overall.

However, CSU has countered with an offer of a 5% wage increase and minor salary increases for department chairpersons. They argue that the university’s financial reserves,‍ including operating cash surpluses and emergency reserves amounting to $766 million, ‌should not ‍be used ⁢for salary increases but rather for economic downturns or‍ natural disasters such as earthquakes or wildfires.

Vice Chancellor for Human‍ Resources at CSU, Leora Freedman, stated that the wage increase requested by the union would cost the system around $380 million in new ⁢recurring spending, ⁢which the university cannot afford. CSU has made several offers, including a 15% increase paid ‌over three years, but the union has remained steadfast in ‌their demand for a 12% raise‌ in one year.

Faculty members and students showed their support for the ⁤strike. Victoria Wilson, a political ⁤science lecturer at‌ Cal State Northridge, expressed ⁣her reasons ⁢for ⁤striking, citing inconsistent salaries ⁣that hinder her ⁢ability to reach long-term financial goals. Katerina⁣ Navarro, a student‍ at Cal State Los Angeles, voiced her belief that more ⁤investment should be ‍made in salaries and educational ‌resources, as those in the⁤ education field are ‌severely underpaid for their ⁣work.

While CSU has not provided further comment on the strike, the campuses remain open to⁤ the⁤ public and classes ⁤continue as scheduled.
