REUTERS\/Ben Nelms\/File Photo<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>WASHINGTON (Reuters) \u2013 \u2063The U.S. Federal Aviation \u200cAdministration (FAA) has recommended that airlines operating Boeing 737-900ER jets \u2063inspect door plugs,\u2064 to ensure that they are properly secured after some operators reported unspecified issues with bolts upon \u200binspections.<\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1663871513696-art-3\" style=\"min-width: 320px; min-height: 50px; text-align: center;\">  \t<script>  \t\tgoogletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1663871513696-art-3'); });  \t<\/script>  <\/div>\n<div class=\"ad-slot__ad-label\">Advertisement<\/div>\n<\/p>\n<p>Regulators have stepped up scrutiny on Boeing after a Jan. \u200b5 \u2063mid-air panel blowout on an eight-week-old Alaska Airlines MAX 9 \u2064jet (ALK.N), that left a gaping hole\u2063 in the aircraft. Boeing has sought to contain the damage, appointing an \u2062independent advisor to examine quality control in its manufacturing processes while numerous \u200cplanes remain grounded.<\/p>\n<p>The FAA \u2063grounded 171 Boeing \u2062737 MAX 9 \u200cplanes after the Jan. 5 incident.<\/p>\n<p>In its new \u201cSafety Alert for\u2062 Operators,\u201d the\u200b FAA \u2063said that some airlines had conducted additional inspections on the 737-900ER mid-exit door plugs and had \u200bnoted \u201cfindings\u200b with bolts during the maintenance inspections.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The 737-900ER is \u200cmore widely used than the 737 MAX 9. It is an older model but has the same optional door plug design \u2062that allows for the addition of an extra emergency\u2062 exit door when\u2062 carriers opt to \u2062install more seats.<\/p>\n<p>There \u200care 490 Boeing 737-900ER jets in \u2064service, at least 79 of which have an active door rather than the plug because\u2064 they are operated by low-cost airlines with denser cabins, according to\u200d Cirium data.<\/p>\n<p>The FAA recommended that carriers \u2062perform key portions of a\u200c fuselage plug assembly maintenance procedure related to the four bolts used to secure the door plug to the \u200bairframe &#8220;as \u2062soon as possible.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>A Boeing spokesperson said: &#8220;We fully support the FAA\u200d and our customers in this action.&#8221;<br \/>Boeing first delivered \u2064the 737-900ER in 2007 and the last \u2063one in 2019.<\/p>\n<p>Boeing (BA.N), shares \u2062were down 0.8% in morning trading on Monday. They are down more than 17% since the beginning of the year.<\/p>\n<p>Alaska Airlines and United Airlines (UAL.O), the only two U.S. \u200ccarriers that use the MAX 9, this month \u2062said they had found loose parts on multiple grounded MAX\u2064 9\u2064 aircraft during preliminary checks.<\/p>\n<p>They have had to cancel\u2062 thousands of flights this month because\u200d of the \u200dgrounding, with United cancellations\u2064 extending at least through Friday.\u2063 Alaska did not immediately comment on how long it planned to extend cancellations.<\/p>\n<p>The FAA on Sunday said\u200c MAX 9 \u200cplanes will remain grounded until it &#8220;is satisfied\u200d they are safe to return to service.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">LITTLE 900ER DISRUPTION SEEN<\/h4>\n<p>In contrast to the new MAX\u200c 9 that experienced the door-plug \u200dissue, \u2064Boeing 737-900ER aircraft have more than 11 million\u2064 hours of \u2064operation and 3.9 million flight cycles,\u2062 and the FAA said the door plug \u2063&#8221;has not been\u200b an issue with this model.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Both United and Alaska said they \u200bhad begun inspections \u2062of the door plugs on their 737-900ER \u2062fleets. United, which\u200d has 136 737-900ER aircraft, said inspections should be completed in the next few \u200cdays without customer disruptions.<\/p>\n<p>Alaska said its inspections began several days ago without any findings so far.<\/p>\n<p>Delta Air Lines (DAL.N), the largest operator of the \u200b900ER, said\u2062 it had \u200copted to \u2064take &#8220;proactive measures&#8221;\u200c to inspect its fleet. It does not \u2063expect any operational impact.<\/p>\n<p>Globally, the three U.S. carriers operate the vast majority of the 737-900ERs with the door plugs.<\/p>\n<p>A \u2063spokesperson for Korean Air,\u2064 which has six 737-900ERs, said it planned to carry\u2064 out additional inspections and finish them \u2062within\u200d 30 days without any schedule \u200cdisruption.<\/p>\n<p>The FAA on \u2062Wednesday said inspections of\u200d an initial \u2064group of 40 Boeing 737\u200b MAX \u20629 jets\u2062 had been completed, a key hurdle to ending \u2063the grounding of the \u200bmodel. The FAA\u200c is continuing to review data from \u2062those inspections.<\/p>\n<p>FAA Administrator Mike Whitaker told Reuters this month that the FAA\u200d was &#8220;going through\u200c a process to\u200c work out how to restore confidence in\u200b the integrity of these plug doors.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>National Transportation Safety Board Chair Jennifer Homendy last week said\u200d that the investigative \u2064agency would be looking at \u200dnumerous records related to the door plug.
