According to lawmakers who \u2062were there, the former head \u200bof the\u2063 National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) and former chief medical adviser to the\u2063 president \u2014 \u200cthe man\u2062 who once <a href=\"https:\/\/www.msnbc.com\/mtp-daily\/watch\/fauci-why-would-the-chinese-want-to-make-a-virus-that-equally-kills-them-114554437798\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">equated himself with\u200d science itself<\/a> \u2014 offered a stunning concession \u2063that the six-foot social distancing edict\u2062 \u201csort of just appeared\u201d out \u200dof nowhere and was likely \u200dnot based on \u200cscientific data.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Many \u2063have argued this for years. Twelve months \u200dafter\u2063 the first coronavirus guidelines were\u200b issued on March 9, \u200b2020, Tucker Carlson \u200b <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/watch\/?v=3549456311850718\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">pointed out<\/a> what a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/370\/bmj.m3223\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">report<\/a> in the\u2063 British Medical Journal had contended six months earlier: Social \u200cdistancing rules that \u201cstipulate a single \u200bspecific physical distance between individuals to reduce transmission\u201d originate in flawed research\u2062 from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/ebay-canceled-dr-seuss-but-you-can-still-buy-works-from-hitler-marx-and-more\/\" title=\"EBay Canceled Dr. Seuss, But You Can Still Buy Works From Hitler, Marx And More\">late 19th century<\/a> and\u200d a longstanding framework that simplistically \u201cdichotomizes\u200d respiratory droplets\u200c into two sizes.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2-long d-flex justify-content-center\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center; \" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-1957621021\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1379703300879-0\" class=\"mb-30\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-148a35b3dc08a1d3fa0dcd96fc159c7d fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-148a35b3dc08a1d3fa0dcd96fc159c7d\"><\/div>\n<p>So how did this quackery suddenly \u2062become trusted \u201cscience\u201d? Revisiting the critical February to\u2064 March 2020 time frame, \u200dincluding\u2062 <a href=\"https:\/\/s3.documentcloud.org\/documents\/20793561\/leopold-nih-foia-anthony-fauci-emails.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Fauci\u2019s emails<\/a> from the period, \u200cprovides some insight.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Origins of the Six-Foot Rule<\/h3>\n<p>On Feb. \u20635, 2020, Fauci sent a note \u2063to Dr. Nancy Messonnier, the Center \u200cfor Disease Control\u2063 and Prevention\u2019s (CDC) director of the National Center for Immunization \u200cand \u2062Respiratory Diseases and early incident \u2062manager\u200c for the Covid response, asking whether a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/experts-race-to-figure-out-how-contagious-the-wuhan-virus-is-11580672317\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Wall Street Journal article<\/a> from Feb. \u200c2 had misquoted the CDC. The \u200barticle referred to the virus\u2019 ability to \u201cspread from\u200d infected patients <em>without\u2064 symptoms<\/em> to close contacts \u200dwithin <em>about 6 feet<\/em>\u201d (my emphasis). It\u2019s not clear whether it was Messonnier who spoke with \u200dthe \u200bJournal, how she\u2064 responded to Fauci\u2019s inquiry, or where the information came\u200b from.<\/p>\n<p>The six-foot standard \u2062had already drifted \u2063into public health documents prior to the Covid\u2064 outbreak. \u200cFor example, in October 2019, the California \u200cDepartment of Health \u200cupdated\u2062 its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdph.ca.gov\/Programs\/CHCQ\/HAI\/CDPH%20Document%20Library\/RecommendationsForThePreventionAndControlOfInfluenzaNov2018_FINAL.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">guidelines<\/a> for the prevention and control of \u200dinfluenza in nursing facilities, in line \u200dwith CDC \u200drecommendations, for \u201ca distance \u200cof six \u2064feet between patients \u2062with influenza in multi-bed \u2062rooms\u201d and the\u200c \u201cuse \u200cof facemasks when within six\u200d feet of a patient with suspected\u200b or confirmed influenza.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The updates were supposedly based on \u201cresearch that demonstrates that \u200brespiratory\u200b droplets may travel as far\u2064 as six\u200b feet.\u201d However, the \u200c\u201cresearch\u201d \u2063wasn\u2019t any innovative, \u200crandomized controlled \u2064study \u200bbut \u2062rather the CDC\u2019s 2007 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/infectioncontrol\/guidelines\/isolation\/scientific-review.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">hunch<\/a>, \u2062likely based on a 2003 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nejm.org\/doi\/full\/10.1056\/nejmoa031349\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">study<\/a> \u200binto the\u2064 transmission of SARS via\u200c infected passengers on an aircraft. This consensus crept \u200cinto public\u200d health\u2062 speak\u200b via\u200c guidelines\u2062 published in places \u200dsuch\u2064 as the <a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/cid\/article\/68\/6\/e1\/5251935\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Clinical Infectious Diseases<\/em> journal<\/a> \u2063 and by the\u2064 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.izsummitpartners.org\/content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/guidance-for-developing-a-flu-vax-reqt-policy-for-hcp-in-post-acute-and-ltcf.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">National Adult and Influenza Immunization Summit<\/a>. In \u200cApril 2020, Quartz (and subsequently \u2062 <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2020\/05\/20\/why-6-feet-apart-social-distancing-coronavirus-cdc-six-foot-rule-spread-covid-19-liquid-droplets\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Fortune<\/a>) \u200bendeavored to confirm the origins of the six-foot guideline with the \u2062CDC, but after \u201cmultiple attempts over \u2062two weeks, the agency failed to comment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To these already shaky foundations, the CDC added in its Feb. 2 quote to \u200cthe\u200b Journal the folklore of asymptomatic spread, which the 2003 SARS study\u200c effectively ruled out, and which the \u2062World Health Organization-China Joint Mission poured cold\u2063 water on in\u2062 its\u200b Feb. 28 <a href=\"https:\/\/digitallibrary.un.org\/record\/3859867\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">report<\/a>. Dr. Bruce \u2063Aylward, team lead and senior adviser to the WHO \u200cdirector-general, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/national\/top-global-health-expert-says-schools-not-a-major-covid-19-driver-20200317-p54ax6.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">emphasized<\/a> that it was an \u201curban myth\u201d that asymptomatic transmission chains were widely spreading the virus.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Messonnier was already flagging the likelihood of containment measures. In a Feb. 25 telebriefing, she\u200c publicly braced the nation to expect \u2064\u201cschool closings, workplace shutdowns, and the \u2064canceling\u2064 of large gatherings,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/02\/25\/health\/coronavirus-us.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">warning<\/a> of \u201csevere disruption\u201d\u2064 to \u2063everyday life.<\/p>\n<p>On March 1, Fauci\u200d asked\u2062 Messonnier\u2019s opinion on an interim Targeted Layered Mitigation Strategy distributed internally by Dr. Garrett Grisby, director\u200c of the Office \u2062of Global Affairs at\u200c the Department of\u2064 Health and Human Services (HHS). Then on \u200dMarch 4, Messonnier hosted a working session \u201cto \u2062align current activities and next steps to be executed as part of a coordinated HHS response\u2063 to COVID-19.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-689b65190efe08e557610e64dd1b99d7 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-6\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-689b65190efe08e557610e64dd1b99d7\"><\/div>\n<p>It\u2019s unclear \u200cwhether\u2063 the six-foot rule had already wormed its way into the\u2064 strategizing at \u200dthis point. However,\u200b it\u2019s evident that\u2064 the extreme\u200c social distancing train had left \u2063the station.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Following China<\/h2>\n<p>Certainly, China\u200d and the WHO\u200b drove the momentum for adopting stringent containment measures. Although Dr. Aylward admitted he hadn\u2019t seen anything like \u2064China\u2019s strategy in his 30 years in the\u200d business, the joint mission report enthusiastically endorsed\u200c China\u2019s aggressive model. In fact, according to Fauci, it was Dr. Clifford \u200cLane,\u200c clinical director at the NIAID and \u2064U.S. \u200crepresentative to the WHO delegation to China, who <a href=\"https:\/\/threadreaderapp.com\/thread\/1595901627596435458.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">convinced<\/a> Fauci that the\u200d U.S. should emulate China\u2019s \u200dlockdowns.<\/p>\n<p>Notwithstanding,\u200c the six-foot rule can\u2019t\u200c reasonably\u200b be blamed \u200con either the WHO or China. It isn\u2019t mentioned in the joint \u200dmission\u2062 report. In fact, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/goatsandsoda\/2020\/01\/25\/799335786\/photos-what-it-s-like-living-through-an-outbreak\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">photos<\/a> from the period \u200cfrom China show masked individuals thronging grocery stores \u200dand\u200b huddled together waiting to\u200b be tested in local hospitals, and even the WHO-China delegates crowding together for a <a href=\"https:\/\/nihrecord.nih.gov\/2020\/04\/03\/niaids-lane-discusses-who-covid-19-mission-china\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">group\u200b photo<\/a>. Early on, the WHO was\u200b actually advising keeping <a href=\"https:\/\/qz.com\/1831100\/where-does-the-six-feet-social-distancing-guideline-come-from\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>three feet <\/em>apart<\/a> (1\u2064 meter), an equally arbitrary recommendation based \u200bon 90-year-old research \u2063into tuberculosis, and which was applied in places like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2020\/03\/08\/europe\/italy-coronavirus-lockdown-europe-intl\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Italy<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2020\/mar\/25\/eerie-quiet-but-no-panic-as-rural-france-enters-lockdown-coronavirus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">France<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Deceptive Claims<\/h2>\n<p>In the U.S., the \u2063six-foot rule officially emerged between early and mid-March. Experts suddenly shifted from their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c-span.org\/video\/?470003-1\/vice-president-pence-coronavirus-task-force-briefing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">recommendations<\/a> on March\u2062 4 \u2064to wash hands, cover sneezes, and stay home when\u200d sick \u2014 all measures, as CDC Director\u2062 Dr. Robert Redfield pointed out, that \u201cwe would ask\u200b you to do for flu.\u201d\u2062 On \u2064March 9, the\u200b earliest CDC <a href=\"https:\/\/stacks.cdc.gov\/view\/cdc\/85745\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">guidelines<\/a> were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rev.com\/blog\/transcripts\/donald-trump-mike-pence-and-coronavirus-update-transcript-march-9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">announced<\/a> in a\u200b White House Coronavirus Taskforce \u200bpress briefing. Fauci and \u200dDr. Deborah Birx <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/12\/07\/americas-draconian-covid-lockdowns-were-about-following-communist-china-not-the-science\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">deceptively claimed<\/a> \u2062that the \u201cscientific evidence that informed each of these guidelines\u201d came from research out of Australia. This was apparently <a href=\"https:\/\/7news.com.au\/lifestyle\/health-wellbeing\/coronavirus-australia-newcastle-public-health-expert-craig-dalton-says-eat-lunch-alone-c-740030\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">news\u2064 to the Australian researchers<\/a> \u2062who authored the four-day-old, non-peer-reviewed, and inherently flawed paper.<\/p>\n<p>The implications are sickening. In the \u2063forthcoming public hearing, lawmakers need to frogmarch Fauci down memory lane and retrace \u200dthe <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/listen-elon-musk-presses-robinhood-ceo-about-gamestop-fiasco-restricted-trading\/\" title=\"LISTEN: Elon Musk Presses Robinhood CEO About GameStop Fiasco, Restricted Trading\">decision-making process<\/a> that unfolded in those pivotal weeks leading up to \u200dthe first <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/california-sheriffs-tell-newsom-they-wont-enforce-covid-curfew\/\" title=\"California Sheriffs Tell Newsom They Won't Enforce COVID Curfew\">social distancing guidelines<\/a>. Fauci might be correct that the rules weren\u2019t based on science. But they didn\u2019t write themselves, and\u2064 the public has a right to know who did. Too many lives were\u2064 destroyed by the pandemic response travesty for Fauci to \u201cI don\u2019t recall\u201d his way out \u2062of this \u200bone.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"> <\/p>\n<h2> What is the scientific basis for the\u2064 six<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/white-house-covid-czar-admits-6-foot-social-distancing-rule-not-the-right-way\/\" title=\"White House COVID Czar Admits 6-foot Social Distancing Rule \u2018Not the Right Way\u2019\">-foot social distancing rule<\/a>?<\/h2>\n<p><span>  Ly March and early April 2020. On March 16, the White House Coronavirus \u2062Task Force first\u200c recommended social \u200ddistancing guidelines, \u200cwhich included \u200bthe six-foot rule, as a way to slow the spread of \u2062the virus. However, as mentioned \u2063earlier, the origins of this specific distancing distance are still unknown.<\/p>\n<p>What is \u2064known, though, is that the scientific basis for \u200dthe six-foot rule is questionable at best. As mentioned \u2062in the British Medical Journal report and various other sources, the rule is based on\u2063 flawed research \u2064from the late 19th century. It \u2062simplistically categorizes respiratory droplets into two sizes and\u200c assumes that a specific\u2062 physical distance can effectively reduce transmission.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, the sources of these guidelines \u200bwere not innovative or \u2062randomized controlled studies\u2062 but rather the\u2063 CDC&#8217;s 2007 hunch and\u2063 the\u200c findings\u2063 from a\u2063 2003 study on the transmission of SARS.
