From passing bills to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bnnbloomberg.ca\/trudeau-s-party-passes-bill-to-regulate-social-media-streaming-1.1620141\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">regulate<\/a> the\u2062 internet, \u200c <a href=\"https:\/\/greenwald.substack.com\/p\/letter-from-a-young-canadian-authoritarianism\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">freezing<\/a> bank accounts\u200b of those who donated to the trucker convoy, to <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/05\/21\/how-canada-went-from-liberal-democracy-to-authoritarian-state\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">barring<\/a> unvaccinated citizens from boarding an airplane (or otherwise\u200b leaving the country) \u2014 Canada has descended into a\u2062 spiraling authoritarian \u200bstate that has caught\u2063 many by surprise.<\/p>\n<h3>A Shift Towards More Free Speech Attacks \u200cand Legislative Disasters<\/h3>\n<p>In 2023, this shift took a sharp turn towards even more free speech attacks and legislative disasters.<\/p>\n<p>Just before\u200d the end of the year, Canada hit a new \u200blow for \u200dfreedom\u200b of political expression as an Ottawa judge\u2064 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernstandard.news\/news\/ottawa-judge-rules-book-critical-of-trudeau-illegal\/51330\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ruled<\/a> that the conservative commentator Ezra Levant\u2019s anti-Trudeau book promotion during a previous federal election was illegal. \u201cI am the only person in \u200chistory they are targeting for writing an election book during an election,\u201d Levant <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">writes<\/span>. Levant\u200b is now fined $13,000 \u2063and threatened with potential criminal \u200dprosecution should he write and promote another \u2062political book in the next\u200b election.<\/p>\n<p>Yes, this is Canada \u2014 not Cambodia (where the police <a href=\"https:\/\/maajidnawaz.substack.com\/p\/journalists-arrested-around-the-world\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">arrest<\/a> \u200dreporters \u2062for quoting politicians).<\/p>\n<p>From\u2064 prosecuting lockdown-violating \u200bpastors to rejecting employment to unvaccinated nurses, this is the\u200d new norm in Canada\u2019s social justice\u200b kangaroo courts.<\/p>\n<p>The most dramatic shift in Canadians\u2019\u2064 lives \u200din 2023 as \u200ba result of government failure comes from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ctvnews.ca\/politics\/understanding-bill-c-18-canada-s-online-news-act-and-its-proposed-rules-explained-1.6488532\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bill C-18<\/a>, which \u2062mandated social media companies compensate Canadian <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/democrat-big-tech-and-media-actions-to-steal-the-election-heres-whats-going-on-in-pennsylvania-and-michigan\/\" title=\"Democrat, Big Tech and Media Actions to Steal the Election \u2013 Here\u2019s What\u2019s Going on in Pennsylvania and Michigan\">media outlets<\/a> for distributing their content. Twitter \u2064and Facebook warned beforehand they would not be able to\u2064 comply with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.michaelgeist.ca\/2023\/09\/a-4-link-tax-why-the-governments-draft-bill-c-18-regulations-just-increased-the-chances-of-no-news-on-meta-and-google-in-canada\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">4% \u200clink fee<\/a> \u2064for a\u200d number \u2064of technical,\u2064 pragmatic reasons \u2014 also\u200c stating that their platforms helped generate traffic\u2064 to these sites \u2014 but the Trudeau government pushed it anyway. The unsettling result:\u200d Canadians can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.michaelgeist.ca\/2023\/08\/why-is-meta-blocking-all-news-links-because-bill-c-18-covers-all-news-outlets\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">no longer access<\/a> \u2063 any news \u200darticles, videos, or event accounts of\u2062 media outlets and newspapers on Meta.<\/p>\n<p>This has been a complete disaster\u2062 leading to independent media outlets losing significant \u2063traffic and\u200d millions of dollars in\u200c revenue.\u2063 On the consumer side, many\u2064 users, especially my\u200d peer Zoomers, stay \u2062at least minimally informed with local and international affairs by scrolling through their Instagram feed, but that is \u200bnow all gone.<\/p>\n<p>What implications will this have for future voting outcomes and the \u200bpolitical\u200b climate, more broadly?<\/p>\n<p>All of this could have been\u200b averted if the government hadn\u2019t spread its tentacles far and wide across online sectors, \u200cattempting to \u2063regulate and engineer a \u2063more \u201cequitable\u201d online world (though one where CBC profits the most).<\/p>\n<p>Worst yet, the government <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/radio-television-telecommunications\/news\/2023\/09\/crtc-takes-major-step-forward-to-modernize-canadas-broadcasting-framework.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announced<\/a> a new mandate requiring podcast platforms to\u200d officially register with \u2063the federal government. The motivation of \u201cpromoting Canadian\u200b content\u201d for the expansion of \u2064online regulation may fool the\u200c naive, but the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.illusionconsensus.com\/p\/why-canadas-new-regulations-for-podcast\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">guidelines<\/a> of the anointed government agency (the CRTC) include \u200cthe preferential boosting of \u201cracialized communities and Canadians of \u200ddiverse ethnocultural backgrounds.\u201d It\u2019s easy to \u2064imagine what that may look \u2064like. Minorities who abide by the regime may be government-boosted but what about black, vaccine-hesitant Covid dissidents? Or Muslim \u200cparents vocally opposed\u2062 to the\u2064 imposition of gender ideology in kindergarten class?<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Indigenous Graves<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>This year has also revealed\u2062 the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/1-7-million-teachers-will-receive-newsguard-licenses-to-spot-disinformation\/\" title=\"1.7 Million Teachers Will Receive NewsGuard Licenses to 'Spot Disinformation'\">biggest media scandal<\/a> in recent Canadian history. \u2063After two \u2064years of fear-mongering \u200babout\u200b <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/canadas-mass-graves-narrative-that-sparked-church-burnings-crumbles-amid-dearth-of-evidence\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">mass graves of\u2064 Indigenous children<\/a> at\u200d a number of\u2062 residential schools, nothing has been found in \u2064a recent <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2023\/08\/31\/still-no-evidence-of-mass-graves-of-indigenous-children-in-canada\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">formalized excavation<\/a>. The\u200b claim originated from a \u2062First\u2063 Nations \u2063group\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/british-columbia\/tk-eml%C3%BAps-te-secw%C3%A9pemc-215-children-former-kamloops-indian-residential-school-1.6043778?ref=quillette.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">discovery<\/a> of \u2063\u201canomalies\u201d\u200d in the soil at residential schools using \u201cground-penetrating\u200c radar.\u201d Some independent voices at the time expressed caution, but\u200b leading media channels rushed to judgment and \u200dwrongly asserted dispositive evidence of\u2064 human remains.\u200c The New York Times published multiple\u200d pieces with outright\u200c falsehoods, such as an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/06\/07\/world\/canada\/mass-graves-residential-schools.html?ref=quillette.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">article<\/a> by veteran reporter \u200bIan\u2063 Austen \u200bstating, \u201cthe \u200cremains of more than 1,000 people, mostly children, have been discovered on the grounds\u2064 of three former residential schools in two Canadian provinces since May.\u201d This was false then and it is embarrassingly false now. The Times \u2063has yet to correct \u200dits\u2064 many factual errors in its coverage of this issue.<\/p>\n<p>Liberal media outlets have\u2063 a way in which to completely detract \u2063from \u200dreal issues such as the\u200c generational poverty, mental health crisis, and neglect in\u200d Canadian Aboriginal \u200dcommunities. Instead, we are now focusing on\u200d the non-existence of media-hyped Indigenous children\u2019s human remains. Really?<\/p>\n<p>On the culture-war front, \u200dthis past month we saw a\u200c few disorienting clashes on Canadian grounds between\u200b \u201cminority\u201d groups who \u2014 surprise, surprise \u2014 often \u2062have diametrically opposing views on fundamental ethical issues. One incident in particular is enough to\u200d make an intersectional, \u2063blue-haired resistance liberal\u200b faint from cognitive paralysis. At a\u2063 Muslim-led <a href=\"https:\/\/millionmarch4children.squarespace.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">1\u2063 Million March 4 Children protest<\/a> \u2014 aimed at pushing back against radical gender ideology being \u2062taught in schools \u2064\u2014 one Muslim boy gets up on stage and <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/MourraMahmoud\/status\/1706805729473273866?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">says<\/a>, gay \u200cpeople are \u201cdisgusting\u201d and \u201cpsychopaths.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This video contains multitudes.\u200d On\u200c one level, this clip exposes everything wrong with social media soundbites used to advance political narratives. The full video <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MourraMahmoud\/status\/1706805729473273866?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">segment<\/a> includes the boy\u2019s father\u2062 correcting him, saying\u2062 gay people\u2062 are human \u200btoo and \u200ddeserve our love and respect, but the <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/atRachelGilmore\/status\/1706770791541436443?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">viral clip<\/a> \u200c used by leading progressive journalists conveniently didn\u2019t include that portion. Much more interestingly, you saw the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.macnet.ca\/2023\/official-statements\/joint-statement-sept18\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Muslim Association of Canada<\/a> supporting the national anti-2SLGBTQ+ protests\u200b and calling out the\u200b prime minister\u2019s \u2064attacks against the movement as hateful. This \u2062is amusingly ironic as Trudeau\u2019s messaging\u200b a few years ago\u2062 \u2014 before the school indoctrination tensions kicked into full gear \u2014 was clearly catered \u200cto\u200b win the sympathies\u2062 of \u2064Muslim migrants. Now,\u200d many of those people are calling out \u200chis\u2064 bulls***.\u2062 As it turns out, appeasing\u200d all identity \u200dgroups\u2062 \u2014 many of whom have\u200d nothing in common\u200d except\u2064 for how\u200b elite white people\u2064 perceive \u200dthem \u2014 is practically impossible and Canada is learning that the hard way.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Racial Segregation<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Lastly, is another hot culture-war story \u2014 now\u200b pertaining to\u200b race \u2014 of controversial <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RobFai\/status\/1706097713698464133\/photo\/1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">posters<\/a> found in Metro Vancouver\u2062 advertising a mom-and-toddler group for \u201cwhites-only.\u201d \u201cIt\u2062 seeks to provide \u201cproud parents of European children\u201d a place \u200cto\u200d \u201cescape forced \u2018diversity\u2019\u201d where their \u201ckids can feel\u200d like they belong. The controversy prompted a\u200b national outcry and \u200claw enforcement \u200chas now <a href=\"https:\/\/bc.ctvnews.ca\/poster-advertising-whites-only-children-s-playtime-sparks-outrage-in-b-c-community-1.6576911\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">launched<\/a> an \u2062investigation\u2063 to see if there is any \u201ccriminality involved.\u201d Needless to say, there\u2062 is no defense for congregating \u200cwhite children and their mothers \u200das \u200dan escape from\u200b ethnic minorities. Anyone who publicly says otherwise will have their career\u200c and livelihood destroyed in the blink \u200bof an eye. Yes, it\u2019s 2023 \u2014 \u2063not \u20631985. But, here\u2019s \u2062a revealing question: replace the \u201cwhites-only\u201d\u200c label in the poster to \u201cpeople-of-color-only\u201d and ask yourself, would that generate even one crumble \u200bof controversy?<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m \u200csorry,\u2063 but the city mayor Brad West would not <a href=\"https:\/\/bc.ctvnews.ca\/poster-advertising-whites-only-children-s-playtime-sparks-outrage-in-b-c-community-1.6576911\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">condemn<\/a> it as \u201cvile garbage\u201d which \u2018\u201cisn\u2019t welcome\u200c in our community,\u200d or anywhere else.\u201d Ethnic-exclusive spaces exist in\u200b every liberal, \u2063metropolitan city, from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/hamilton\/mcmaster-university-black-graduation-1.6490211\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">black \u200bgraduation ceremonies<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dharma.org\/retreats\/519\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cpeople of color\u201d meditation retreats<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.upbeacon.com\/article\/2019\/11\/women-of-color-club-makes-waves-on-campus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cwomen of\u200c color\u201d clubs on campus<\/a>, and\u200b \u2014 wait for \u200dit \u2014\u2062 yes,\u2063 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.meetup.com\/black-moms-social-club\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">mom and child groups<\/a> for black \u200cCanadians only.<\/p>\n<p>If you search\u2064 \u201cpeople of color\u201d followed by the \u200dfirst activity \u200bor event that (cooking, sports, education, music) enters \u2063your mind, there\u2019s a good chance it exists \u200d\u2014 \u200dand nakedly\u2063 thrives at a powerful liberal\u2063 institution near \u200byou. This is where our \u200dsociety is: racial segregation for all minority groups is loudly celebrated, but the same action by European \u201cwhite\u201d groups\u200c is a monstrous evil. Hopefully, this all goes into extinction when \u201cpeople of color\u201d turn\u2062 into the majority in a couple of decades, thereby shattering any progressive justifications for \u201coppressed\u201d ethnic \u200cgroups needing their own sheltered islands in notoriously alt-right havens\u200d such \u2062as \u200cdowntown Toronto or North Vancouver.<\/p>\n<p>The social fabric \u200dof Canada has deteriorated as \u2062much as its\u200b constitutional commitment \u2062to freedom. COVID lockdowns and vaccine\u2062 mandates were the most striking infringements on \u2064civil liberties,\u200c but\u200b the media-supported normalization and political justifications of such measures paved the way for further\u2062 censorious\u200c attacks in 2023. As\u2064 the culture war embroiled, Canadians\u2019 access to online information radically changed \u200cwith much uncertainty about the future of the last remaining pillars of our \u2064\u201cfree\u201d media:\u200d podcasts.<\/p>\n<p>In\u2064 its sustained paradoxical outlook, the more chill, less politically polarized caricature of \u2063Canadian life continues to shatter\u2063 to the \u200cpoint\u200d of absurdity. Really?<\/p>\n<p>On the culture-war front, \u200dthis past month we saw a\u200c few disorienting clashes on Canadian grounds between\u200b \u201cminority\u201d groups who \u2014 surprise, surprise \u2014 often \u2062have diametrically opposing views on\u2063 fundamental \u200cethical issues. One incident in particular\u2063 is enough to\u200d make an intersectional, \u2063blue-haired resistance liberal\u200b faint from cognitive\u2064 paralysis. The \u200dfull video segment includes \u200cthe boy\u2019s father\u2062 correcting him, saying\u2062 \u200bgay\u200c people\u2062 \u200dare human \u200btoo and \u200ddeserve\u2064 our love and respect, but the viral clip \u200c used by leading progressive journalists conveniently didn\u2019t include that portion. Much more interestingly, you saw the Muslim\u200d Association of Canada supporting the national anti-2SLGBTQ+ protests\u200b and calling \u2063out the\u200b prime minister\u2019s \u2064attacks against \u2062the movement \u200bas hateful. This \u2062is amusingly ironic as Trudeau\u2019s messaging\u200b \u2062a few years ago\u2062\u200d \u2014 before the school \u2064indoctrination tensions kicked into full gear \u2014 was clearly catered \u200cto\u200b win the sympathies\u2062 of\u2062 \u2064Muslim migrants. \u2062Now,\u200d many of those people are calling\u2064 out \u200chis\u2064 bulls***.\u2062 As it\u2062 turns out, appeasing\u200d all identity \u200dgroups\u2062 \u2014 many of whom have\u200d nothing in common\u200d except\u2064 for how\u200b \u2063elite white people\u2064 \u200bperceive \u200dthem \u2014\u200c is practically\u2062 impossible and Canada is learning that the \u2064hard way.<\/p>\n<p>Racial Segregation<\/p>\n<p>Lastly,\u200c is another hot culture-war story \u2062\u2014 now\u200b pertaining to\u200b race \u2014 of controversial posters found in Metro Vancouver\u2062 advertising a mom-and-toddler group for \u201cwhites-only.\u201d \u201cIt\u2062 seeks to provide \u201cproud parents of European children\u201d a\u2062 place \u200cto\u200d \u201cescape forced \u2018diversity\u2019\u201d where their \u201ckids can \u2062feel\u200d like they belong. The controversy prompted \u200ca\u200b national \u2062outcry and \u200claw enforcement \u200d\u200chas\u200d now launched an \u2062investigation\u2063 to see if there is any \u201ccriminality involved.\u201d Needless to say, there\u2062 is no \u2062defense for congregating \u200cwhite children and their mothers \u200das \u200dan escape from\u200b ethnic minorities. Anyone who publicly says otherwise will have their career\u200c\u200b and livelihood destroyed in the blink \u2062\u200bof an eye. Yes, it\u2019s 2023 \u2014 \u2063not \u20631985.
