Advocates argue that\u200b if this bill becomes\u200d law, it would be a significant victory for transparency\u2064 and fairness.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The predatory junk fee \u200bindustry has infiltrated many aspects of\u200c our regular purchases and payments to the point where we simply accept it as \u200cthe cost of doing business.\u2063 But it\u200b doesn&#8217;t have\u2063 to be that way,&#8221; emphasized Rep. Nick Pisciottano, D-West Mifflin, the\u2063 sponsor of \u200cthe House bill.<\/p>\n<p>Pisciottano believes \u200cthat forcing disclosure of these fees would help curb unfair business practices.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Sunshine \u2064is the best disinfectant;\u200c our idea was if you basically force these fees to be disclosed, you really disincentivize the use of fees\u2064 at all,&#8221;\u2063 Pisciottano explained. \u2063&#8221;People understand and recognize\u200c it&#8217;s a big\u200d problem \u200bthat we need to tackle. I&#8217;m optimistic\u200c that we can keep the legislation moving in the Senate\u200b in 2024 and continue\u2062 the\u2064 fight to ensure \u200cour economy works better for everyone.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Pat Garofalo, director of state and local policy \u2062at the American Economic Liberties Project, sees the battle against junk fees as a matter of fairness.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is a fairness question,&#8221; Garofalo asserted. &#8220;It&#8217;s \u2064about not pretending that your \u2062products cost one thing when they really cost something else.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Arizona is also taking a strong stance against \u200bjunk fees with an even\u2062 more comprehensive \u200dbill, spearheaded \u200cby Rep. Analise Ortiz, D-Maryvale, \u2062targeting rental fees. Several other state legislatures have also proposed \u200dbills to combat junk fees.<\/p>\n<p>In October, the\u2063 Biden administration made junk fees a national issue. FTC\u2062 Commissioner Linda Khan and Consumer Financial Protection \u2063Bureau Director \u2063Rohit Chopra announced a crackdown on the banking industry for overdraft fees and other penalties.<\/p>\n<p>Jon Donenberg, deputy director of the National Economic Council in the White House, compared the elimination of junk fees to nutritional labels that allow customers to make \u200deasy comparisons.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;These things \u2062can really add up.
